An intriguing wildlife moment has been viewed over 16 million times on TikTok, as a stressed deer warned a homeowner of a nearby black bear that appeared on the property.
In the forests of the surrounding areas of Portland, Oregon, this cabin resident was capturing the routine visit from Ziggy, a deer that has been visiting the property every morning for several years.
But this particular visit was different with the deer’s focus firmly on the treeline as she was stomping through the backyard.

This is classic stamping. Deer do this when they feel danger is close by to warn other deer to be alert. This also impacts their scent into the ground so that other deer can smell the "caution sign". They could smell the bear, but were not sure where it was located.

Will a black bear take down a full grown deer? I truly don’t know…I thought they mainly ate fish & berries.
Interestingly Interesting 😮
@rebelchaser can they? Yes. Do they? Not as often as people think. Black bears specifically tend to stick to their more less bloody food options (berries etc)

Eh, the forest usually gets oddly quiet whenever there’s a predator around buuuut I live in southeast Alabama and bears don’t frequent this area.
@AussBosss generally but you should start paying attention to bird calls. You hear how most of the birds got quiet but one continued to sound off in a very specific sequence that it repeated over and over? Birds have specific calls to warn other birds that predators are I the area, and even will adjust that call for different TYPES of predators. For birds, bears aren't a huge danger to them specifically so it's a general warning call but if there's like a snake around or racoon- especially something that can climb trees and is known to raid nests- they have different calls to warn each other, even of other predatory birds. Mockingbirds- which I know you know because I lived in Mobile for over 30 years and they are EVERYWHERE in this whole region- are protectors of other songbirds, are super noisy and can get really aggressive. I've seen 3 mockingbird attacking a hawk that was flying for all it was worth, tryingto get away, while they took turns dive bombing it midair from different directions, all of them screeching like banshees.
I've never seen a deer walk like that. Deer are so beautiful and graceful.

That's the beauty of living in rural areas. The beauty of nature all around.
The bittersweet thing is- this may not even be rural. Deer and Black bears unfortunately are very much living in urban and suburban areas because of deforestation. As long as there’s even a small, shallow wooded area around then they’re there. I’ve seen scenes very similar to this in my neighborhood; I live 5 minutes outside of Uptown Charlotte, NC, which is a major city. I see deer almost daily when arriving home from work. I saw coyotes, foxes and everything else when living in Raleigh, NC. Haven’t seen a Black bear yet but they’re around. (P.S. Just want to clarify I’m not arguing that this family doesn’t live in a rural area; you may know their channel better than me. 😂 I’m just pointing out that moments like this happen in the suburbs and more populated areas too. It’s nice to see nature but it’s sad when it’s because of habitat loss.)

You can't be friendly with bears.. they are predators . If you feed bears then they go through garbage they get too close to people they scare people and they attack children. There was a 10-year-old in the Smoky mountains that got attacked by a bear because someone was feeding them. And they equate people with food.. wild animals are wild and if you care about them stay away from them let them live their life.

They vote, too. We see coyote families all the time, and they have little mime discussions on whether they want to go one direction or another. Finally one will aim in the direction he wants to go, and the others pick some other, or the one he wants, but they all go the way the majority wants to go.

Her stomps may have warned you but they weren't for you, she's releasing scent through glands in her hooves, leaving a warning for other deer in the form of a scent that a human would never pick up on.
Ah, many thanks. I came to look for the science behind the warning. You did not disappoint. 🙏🏽
That makes sense.
Ha! I love this mic drop to all the, “ohhh she is such a special friend communicating with you” shaaat ahhp!!
Yeah. I couldn’t believe that a deer would intentionally “warn” a human about anything.
Does the deer KNOW that the human who is her friend can't pick up the scent? No. So the obvious stomping, looking at the camera, then stomping again was clearly meant for the woman.
Yes, deer are known to exhibit a behavior called "stomping" or "foot stomping" when they sense potential danger. This behavior involves the deer stamping its front hooves on the ground, which serves several purposes:
1. **Alert Other Deer**: The noise created by the stomping can alert other deer in the area to potential danger. It acts as a warning signal to be on high alert.
2. **Intimidate Potential Threats**: The stomping can also be a way to signal to the predator or threat that the deer is aware of its presence. This might discourage the predator from pursuing an attack, as it loses the element of surprise.
3. **Identify the Threat**: By stomping and making noise, the deer might be trying to provoke a reaction from the potential threat, helping the deer identify what it is dealing with.
While deer typically use stomping to communicate with other deer or to warn off predators like coyotes or dogs, it could theoretically be used to alert humans if a deer perceives them as part of the same environment and potential ally against a common threat, such as a bear.
Edit: To those asking, yes, this info is indeed from a ChatGPT reply to my query on this topic. I thought it would be obvious, as I didn't edit the format.

Wild animals are so attuned to their surrounds in ways we sometimes cannot comprehend. Not only was she using her sense of small, but here ears are like radar antennas. Her eyesight is exceptional, but in this case, she didn’t need to see the ear to know it was there. She smelled it and heard it and the birds were already warning her.
We definitely do not comprehend the extent of animal awareness. Even people who spend their lives studying it are amazed by what they find. The networks of communication that go on between species without our knowledge is vast and comprehensive, with many animals, especially birds, able to react to predators and know everything around them in a large radius without even needing to look up. Heck, even many trees have been shown to communicate with each other in several ways, through scent or complex mycelial networks

Bear looks like a cub..
She's not warning you she warning the other deer
What a faithful friend you have, & a beautiful deer❤
What an amazing back yard!! I would love to see all this beautiful wild life!!!!
Try research which dangers this sort of romantic relationship with wildlife creates!
Outright irresponsible on several levels and extremely dangerous for all involved!
Don't make wildlife accustomed to humans, never mind how lonely or gorgeous you females feel! 🤡☠️🤮
Respect 🫡 Nature
That's really neat to see. Thanks for the video!
The bear is beautiful too!
We should all be thankful that we have this nature still in our country 🙏🏻
I think we are all pretty thankful. Remember they were here before us, they'll be here long after us.
@@craigpiercer79if we do our world right
I don't think that bear was looking for a conflict. He looked chill af.
There is a mom in those woods too
Yeah he just wanted a picnic
He just wanted to talk to the deer about their extended car warranty
that's how bears look all the time though. they always have this "where did he go, George?" look on their face. even when they're running prey down.
He was thinking of hitting the bird feeders.
Omg! How gorgeous is she? What a beautiful girl. To be warning you like that! It’s amazing! Stay blessed all you especially ziggy. ❤🙏🏻
She looks tasty.. 😋
@@Steve-dg3md oooh that’s cruel! 🤭❤️
That was amazing to see. Thanks for sharing.
WOW ! This so great ! I have never seen this before ! Beautiful Deer Friend and even the Birds are warning you ! THEY ARE ALL YOUR FRIENDS ! Beautiful life ! Blessings from Michigan !
They are not warning the human. This is a natural instict they perform when threated, not because they care about human "friends". Stop humanize animals wild insticts.
💯All Animals are essential in nature 💯Love Ziggy, birds, Bear & the amazing backyard & wish I could be in nature w/her precious animals too, just like you❤️🦌🕊️🐻💙🍀🌱🌏🙏🏼🌟
So lucky to have her warning you as well as those birds. Lovely video by the way.
😂😂😂🤣
Black bears aren't dangerous to humans though.
@@user-jo5ml8et1z yea okay
@@user-jo5ml8et1z Black bears are the very dangerous to humans. Waaay more likely to see humans as prey than Brown/Grizzly bears are.
There's a reason the old addage is: "If it's Brown get down. If it's Black, fight back."
Look at that . What a wonderful deer 🦌 ❤
She is being aware herself! That is natural instinct for any animal!! I’m glad you could read between the lines, 😂😂😂
The way the deer trust you enough that they’re tryna protect you too 🥹❤️ so precious
Not even, her house is just in the way of their life and this woman thinks they care about her lol
This is silly af the deer is alerting the other deers, she doesn't give two shits about the human in the house behind a window 🤡🤡
Except, that's not what the deer 🦌 was trying to do.
Youre joking right?!?😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 Ma'am this is a wild animal and that woman is inside of a house. She's not a part of the conversation in nature.
Animals are amazing. She's a great communicator. Good on you for picking up the clues. 😊
I never knew that was a danger alert
It's instinctive. She's not consciously deciding to warn her.
😂
No they're really not, this is not deer telling her there is bear. Idk how young you are but animals aren't like that no.
@@SpicyTexan64exactly
Wow! Her body, movements and perception is amazing. I love she was protecting you. Nice video.
The last thing you all need is a mama bear with 3 Cubs.
Amazing Ziggy..amazing relationship you have...how lovely
What's ziggy mean? The only ziggy I know is the comic character lol
She's a good Mama and he's a Big Boy. The Animal world is just Amazing. A lot More in Tune than Us!
As soon as she said, "bear" I was like, that's a good impression of their feet as they walk.
The other deer doesn't appear to be a fawn
Nor is that a "big boy" maby a 3yr old black bear. But she is right about herself being out of tune 😂😂😂
@@jjdajunecorrect. That’s a juvenile bear
I love this comment
What a beautiful girl, I’m sure you thanked her the next time you saw her. I am so impressed.
The birds are also alerting you of incoming danger.
Bear is 👑 of the forest.
Animals are so brilliant with their heightened senses to detect things only a radar could show humans
Oh the bird feeders! No bear can resist.
Just saying.
Mmmmm this is beautiful.
Even tho it’s an alert of danger, it’s peaceful, quiet, respectful, and full of grace. Were can learn sooooo much by simply quieting our minds and tuning into what’s around us.
I don't disagree with you, but in this case, it's quiet and graceful not for any spiritual reason, but because deer are prey animal banking on flight. So they move quietly especially during danger in order not to alert predators.
Fun fact: the same is true for cats! At least halfway. Because cats are prey and predator at the same time, they have twice the reasoning to be indetectable where they can. That's why they erase a lot of markers of their presence, from sound by sneaking to smell by washing so frequently and thoroughly.
@@Broeckchen ok 👍 thank you for that informative response
How wonderful to have such amazing friendships with these beautiful animals
Thank you Ziggy! She is indeed a good mama!
That’s truly amazing how animals alert each other when danger appears. You are blessed to have that connection!! ❤🙏🏻❤
Animals are snitches
The deer wasn't warning the human
She wasn’t warning you she was alerting other deer of danger.
Animals are so much smarter than we think. Thank you for showing us ❤
Yes they are very smart
We must look so clumsy to them 😂
Handled the situation like a pro. Thank you for sharing your wisdom that helps both human and animal to safely coexist
