      One guy at my former FLGS had a trick for basing his Cadians: he just coated the bases around the minis with a layer of pva glue, then drowned them in dried oregano, tapped off the excess, let it all set, then coated all of the oregano in very watered down pva to fixate it and boom, guardsmen with great looking natural leaf litter and aromatic enough to offset the usual funky gaming room grognard smell😂

    A half-foot of Silver
    During one of the chapter's earliest engagements Chapter Master D'Arquitens famously decreed during a seemingly hopeless defense that he would "Take not one single step back, nor give a foot of ground to the foul ork." as a symbol of bravado and honourable oath-taking as was chivalric tradition within the Chapter. Leading through example his firmly planted feet did not move while he fought ceaselessly for over 40 hours against the green orkoid tide. Emboldened by this daring feat his fellow marines fought with incredible fury and victory was within their grasp.
    At the final juncture the Warboss himself set upon D'Arquitens. Their weapons clashed again and again until with a thunderous blow the surrounding onlookers saw their chapter master take a blow head on. A groan of despair arose from all around as the impact drove the Chapter Master back, until the Warboss miraculously fell dead, his heart impaled by their liege-lord's mighty relic blade.
    With his death the ork horde broke and the Astartes claimed victory. As the marines cheered suddenly their celebrations were interrupted by laughter? D'Arquitens looked down at his left greave, seeing where it had clearly been pushed back from the jarring impact. He had broken his oath at the very last juncture but uncharacteristically found humour in his failure. Taking a valuable lesson in how sometimes even sworn oaths must be broken he decreed that the "half a foot" that his left leg had been shifted be henceforth made a permanent part of the chapter's livery. A constant reminder of flexibility in the face of defeat.
    Throughout the Emperor's Grief's long history other such amendments have been made, with some veterans remarking that eventually they will be fighting entirely without colours at all. The right-most pauldron being another notable example, but that is a story for another time...

    Honestly, the first idea that came to me was a Blood Angels successor Chapter. They embody the Emperor's grief at the death of Sanguinius and their chapter emblem having a drop works well to tie that in. Additionally, the purple makes sense to me because red (blood)+blue (water from tears)=purple. Maybe their Chapter has a higher incidence of members falling to the Black Rage because they're tied not only to the defect in the Blood Angels' gene-seed, but also psychically tied to the Emperor's grief at the loss of Sanguinius before his eyes. They presence of plenty of gold also ties in well to them paying tribute to the Sanguine Gaurd more so than other Blood Angels.

    Thought on the half silver leg. The chapter adopted that motif after a few of their companies were spared destruction from a warp incursion in which the timely arrival of the Grey Knights prevented this. The Grey Knights took high casualties and the chapter wanted in memorialize this sacrifice on their power armor from that day forward.

    had an idea for that white leg, it is the one part of their armor they spend each sun set cleaning. Being the grief, the anticipate disappointment, so as a small symbol of showing that they only exist to serve, they will make sure there is a shinning white part of them on display for all of the warp to see. They carry white paint with them to touch it up if needed. It is the leg as it is the root to a tree - their commitment, the foundation of their cause.

    Edit: re-organized the "Art is never finished...", and added the admission of fear.

  • @saltedllama2759
    @saltedllama2759 ปีที่แล้ว

    A great exercise in pushing one's self outside of their comfort zone. People not only need to do this to become better painters, they also need to be okay with failing; possibly a few times before they figure it out. We are in an age of consume consume consume (via TH-cam or social media), but afraid of putting it to practice. Then we blame our anxiety as an excuse to not try something.
    Take back control and be powerful! This video is a fantastic motivator to get in there and try new things. It will bleed into other areas of your life!
    SIDE NOTE: Once you do figure out a color or technique, don't let that be your default with every project. If you find you really like how Mephiston Red performs, for example, that doesn't mean you should use that paint for every instance where you need red. Sometimes the properties don't align with the overall aesthetic you are hoping for. Or if you figure out how to achieve a circular highlight through stippling, that doesn't mean you should use stippling for every instance where you need a circular highlight; different textures or materials being represented, as well as the volumes of the piece means that you may need to approach it differently. So again, find a dummy model or even a drawing app to try something out and continue to push your own boundaries.

  • @jorgemontero6384
    @jorgemontero6384 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Great video!
    The easiest approach to red is what the grimdark people are doing: Forget about thinking that the leg is red: it's brown with red highlights. Once you overhighlight to death, the way many of us do in green skins, mimicking the old Warhammer Fantasy green... it's just properly red.
    The same trick with the grey, really. When you watch, say, Jose David's golden demon grey knight, you see that the base color is very dark, so the midtone ends up darker than we'd think.

  • @RainMakeR_Workshop
    @RainMakeR_Workshop ปีที่แล้ว +4

    The main thing the half grey leg makes me think of is the saying "one foot in the grave", in reference to someone who is near death. So maybe it is a tribute to a high ranking member who is still a total badass, like an ancient Dreadnought who is held in reverence (kind of like Bjorn the Fell-Handed). Given their name it could also be in reference to the Emperor himself. Or maybe there is something about the chapter that has them all in a near death state.

  • @mattw_dev
    @mattw_dev ปีที่แล้ว +11

    Lore Idea (Inspired by the Blood Angels Black Rage):
    The Emperor’s Greif Chapter emerged from a region plagued by constant warp anomalies, causing intense psychic disturbances.
    The chapter's gene-seed is subtly influenced by these chaotic energies, granting them a heightened connection to the Warp. Despite their formidable combat prowess, the Marines struggle with haunting visions of the Emperor's past, burdening them with a collective sorrow known as the Emperor's Grief. This emotional weight fuels their determination in battle, as they strive to redeem the pain suffered by the Emperor in millennia long gone.

    I can get overly focused on a task, and have learnt to set myself a timer for between 20 and 60 minutes. When it goes off, I have to put down my task, stand up, and turn it off. The act of standing will usually prompt me to go "oh, I should eat / pee / whatever." I found this a more successful tool than some other things, because the only extra step I need to remember is to set the timer, and everything else just flows from that. Especially if you're used to setting timers whilst cooking - then your brain has the "oh, go deal with the timer" reflex reinforced by things catching fire when you ignore it. What works for me may or may not work for you, but it's an idea if you want to try it.
    Learning to walk away from a project and come back tomorrow was harder and still isn't perfect, but one time when I was exhausting myself over my R2-D2 build, my father pointed out something very helpful: I'm in my late 40s. I'm probably going to live at least another forty years. I have *lots* of time to get this droid finished and enjoy it.
    I know it's not quite the same because you need content for your videos, because that's your job now. But still: you're almost twenty years younger than I am. You're probably going to live for another sixty years. You have so much time to finish your projects; it doesn't have to happen today. And I know you know this; but sometimes, having someone outside your head say it helps one remember these things.

    Backstory idea: the grey on the leg could perhaps represent a mark of penance or something. Perhaps there was a hive city whose occupants were under the boot of the enemy, and the chapter wasn't able to rescue them on time.
    This year, I've started actually tackling some of the things I've been afraid to do with painting (infantry camo), and so far I've been pretty happy with my progress. I take plenty of breaks though. I've found that if I paint in small stages and small batches as I learn, I can come back to each stage with fresh eyes and adjust my approach. I do the same with art as well, very iterative. Your results may vary, but this is a nice piecemeal approach that works for me. :)

  • @sduquie2452
    @sduquie2452 ปีที่แล้ว

    Amazing work Louise. Taking a proactive hand at something you feel weak at something you see as shameful or not good enough is a massive sign of strength. Addressing what causes that and working to improve is the only way we can grow. And yes taking moments for distance and self care are absolutely part of that process.
    As for the chapter lore? This whole process kind of reminded me of the Fallen. As lion El'Jonson has returned he has taken some of these redeemable warriors to fight at his side. Unfortunately these forces are extremely limited in number. To combat this a Primaris demi-company has formed using geneseed of these redeemed Fallen. Under The Lions watchful eye The Emporer's Grief took to their first engagements hungry to prove that not all those who falter are lost. The chapter keep this a loosely guarded secret opting to let their actions speak for themselves long before such a history is revealed. The Emporer's Grief is often deployed in unison with other Imperial forces. Especially those that are suspected of renegade action. Though they can quell rebellion with bolter and blade they are just as likely to avoid the in fighting altogether with empathy and inspiring battlefield litanies.

    In Heraldry a split or quartered arms is usually down to combining two noble lines. If Space Marines follow the same pattern then the Emperors Grief might be a chapter originally combined from the remains of two chapters (maybe they were nearly wiped out after fighting together with only a few left?)
    And the white leg might be the remnant of a previous quartering (or 'dimidatment') in the past.
    So maybe 1000s of years ago in the Age of Apostasy the Bringers of Sorrow (purple), fought alongside the Grievers of the Throne (white) maybe against a corrupt Cardinal or something, and were nearly wiped out apart from a handful of guys. Then Sebastian Thor said they could combine their Chapters to create the Bringers of Grief.
    Then millennia later during the Indomnitus Crusade the Bringers of Grief (Purple and White) fought back to back with the Emperors swords and were nearly wiped out (again), but G-Man said they could combine their chapters (again for the Bringers of Grief) to continue as a new Chapter - The Emperors Grief. With that single White element being the only record of the Grievers of the Throne (though their legacy goes on).

This marine with only the final segment of his leg missing is close to being fully honored!

    For the background:
    The guardians of a collection of systems in the galactic north, the Imperial Fists successor chapter The Emperor's Grief were the honourable knights and protectors of flourishing paradise worlds, keeping them safe from the horrors of the galaxy.
    But with the fall of the Cadian Gate, Chapter Master Roger Hobert was forced to use the Chapter Fleet to purge the rampaging hordes of a chaos uprising, who were driven to madness and heresy by the uproar in the Warp, sacrificing much of his Chapter's strength.
    Now, the grim duty of patrolling the orphaned worlds falls to the rest of his brothers, who travel the ruins of once splendid cities and shrines. Seeking the left-over roaming abominations and slaying them in knightly combat, they are ever reminded of their failure by the silent stones of their fallen worlds.

I was trying to do something new and challenging a few years ago, and got so wrapped up in what I was doing that I managed to give myself some of the symptoms of anaphylactic shock (I didn't recognise it, a doctor did later). Louise: The half-grey leg could be a badge of rank. Codex Compliant chapters usually use helm color to denote sergeant/lieutenant/veterancy status, but the half grey leg could fit the bill here.
    I could see them being based on/wardens of an Imperial Sepulcher world where honored/high valued dead are kept.
    In keeping with the funerary theme, the Veterans of the First Company could call themselves "The Cremated" (because they've been burned in the fires of battle).

    As far as the grey split leggings and the Chapter name... I picture them coming from a funeral or tomb world (not necrom tomb world... unless that irony of putting a funeral world on a tomb world jives with you) and they basically have this entire population that focuses on funeral rites and maintaining these tombs and graves for probably billions of saints and fallen warriors... so the old Terran phrase "one foot in the grave" permeates their entire world, and then grey split on the left leg represents them and their people always being a step away from death... whether their own, or those of the people, shrines, and tombs they care for...
    And on a side note, thank you again for sharing your challenges and struggles with maintaining a healthy life, work, rest, sleep, eat, passion, and excitement balances... I do think it really helps to see that everyone has habits that can be detrimental to their hobby and health and really appreciate you letting us see into your world. #EmperorsGriefFTW

    I paint as an artist mainly Oil paints I have my style etc but I've learnt to filter out all the other artists who are amazing and ground breaking. The secret is to focus on your style and develop it further, iron out any weak areas and learn acheiveable new techniques. Ive painted miniatures mainly for board games Dungeon Crawlers and I'm not brilliant but I'm happy with my results. Do I wish I was amazing of course but I know my limitations and miniature painting I never have the patience 😂. All artists regardless of what medium they use get into that head space of not stopping or taking a step back to view the art as a whole. I get like thst sometimes but have learnt to say "No you will end up messing it up". Leave it for a few hours comeback with fresh eyes. It is hard to get into thst mind set but with practice it becomes easier - the other is knowing when to stop painting and say finished.
    Great content by the way.

    Alright, lore idea for the half Grey leg...
    Since they're called "The Emperor's Grief" (love that name, btw 🎉), you could make the reasoning for the Grey being there is that is the signification of the Emperor's physical form dying in the Matierium, while the Gold is the signification of his rebirth as the new god of mankind, being born anew as the one thing he never intended to be, nor ever wanted to be... and us such, the Emperor is in his grief of new role, and in grief with how humanity has fallen so low.
    So while the Red, Gold, and Purple are all signs that the Emperor is very much alive in the Immaterium, he is very much dying in the Materium, which is what the Grey signifies on the leg.
    Just an idea to go with. Hopefully, I explained it well enough, and it actually made sense.
    Love the work you do, Louise 😄😊🎉

    I'm sure I won't be the only person to suggest this, but the half-split leg seems like a deliberate choice on the part of the chapter. To me, all that bright red and rich gold and royal purple speaks of a chapter that was very confident - perhaps *too* confident. Therefore, the choice to disrupt the livery with grey seems designed to make marines of the Emperor's Grief cognisant of their imperfections, the ways in which as a chapter they can improve. It commemorates not a great battle, but a crushing defeat, perhaps involving the loss of a major Imperial world - one in which their hubris overruled their mastery of war and condemned countless lives to the ravages of perfidious Chaos-worshippers. It was this immense defeat, in which the chapter's forces were all but wiped out, that changed how they saw their mission; protecting the Imperium through constant warfare and continuous, relentless improvement. Perfection is impossible, say the Astartes of the Emperor's Grief, for only the Emperor is perfect; but to strive for that perfection is to bring glory to His name. They changed from a chapter of relentless melee attack to one of insurmountable defence, from one that scorned long-range marksmanship to one that mastered it, from one that saw themselves as angels of death to one that saw themselves as arisen to new life in His service. They are the Emperor's Grief, and their mercy is efficient death.

    If I had to paint a model including stuff I am not good at, it would wear tartan and have hazard stripes all over - and would also be finished, as I am much better at starting models than finishing them. I love the vivid scheme, and the whole turned out great - especially the freehand emblem, grand. The grey leg is kept unpainted in chapter colours, honouring the first action by the Emperor's Grief, when they went into action in armour which was still grey (a sort of tribute to all armies going into battle unpainted, I guess - although if unpainted grey armies looked half as good as your grey space marine leg, they'd be superb).

    You are honestly an amazing painter! It's really cool to see your process and what you think of your own work! Now for the emperor's grief, I was thinking the official records state that they are a successor chapter for the blood angels but the other chapters and inquisition suspects something else. After being commissioned by roboute guilliman personally using a 'unknown' gene seed, the emperor's grief have been tasked to seek knowledge as about the eye and to find a way to close it! Due to their task, the need for perfection and almost cult like worship of the emperor many suspects that perhaps the gene seed used by fabius bile to create Fulgrim's clone may have been used. Because of their task and more likely the lack of trust, this chapter is always accompanied by an inquisitor and squad of sisters of battle.

    Great work, really like the fact you covered something you felt your not as good at. It's nice to see someone show they aren't just immediately good at something. This hobby takes practice, patience and perseverance. My favourite way to do red is to add a bit of blue (or purple) to the base shade and just work up to pure red, with maybe the very lightest touch of yellow for the pin highlight. Also welcome to the world of adding purple to everything now, its how I do almost all shading.

    so, i have an idea for the lore of the chapter :) there we go:
    The Emperor's Grief is officially a successor chapter of the Blood Angels. The Chapter was added to the ranks of the blood angels in the ultima founding and they quickly accepted most of the traditions of their progenitor chapter. in loving memory of their lost primarch they keep their left greave half without any colour. the silver represents the mourn for their primarch and that they are not seeing the world in proper colours anymore after their primarchs demise, one of the greatest tragedies the empire ever endured. As with alot of the blood angels successors they seem to be more psychicly adept. most of their marines of the line experience visions of their primarch and sometimes they have tendency for prescience. strangely those visions always seems to be mostly gray with only spots of colour. a clear iridescent metallic red and gold is a returning colour in those visions. when they speak about their visions with their brethren from the librarius or chaplain they describe the incident of their primarch falling different than other blood angels chapters. they see a planet of gold with happy citizens and a wild feral beast in the shape of a wolf attacks their primarch vicously. the primarch falls and shatters like glass on the floor. red shards the colour of glistening blood fall down the stairs their primarch was standing on. As this is not the fall of sanguinus as it is told by the imperium, they tend to keep their visions a secret.
    The chapter also sufferes from the black rage. its substantially more rare than in other chapters of the blood angels and always ends in a gruesome death as the body of the marine starts to mutate rapidly. Its the Chaplains duty to stop this mutation as soon as it appears as their is no saving of the marine at this point.

  • @Zdballard
    @Zdballard หลายเดือนก่อน

    I've always pictured The Emperor's Grief as an Iron Hands successor chapter, as a tribute to the first primarch slain to the heresy. The purple colour being a homage to the once strong bond between the iron hands and the emperor's children and the red being the blood of Ferrus manus. I imagine each of the first 5 great companies embodying the 5 stages of grief.

    I love your reposing of the mini. The pose is natural and doesn’t seem forced. As in, a human could be in this stance and not struggle to keep it.
    As for the grey, how about calling back to the ashes from the incense they burn as they pray to the Emperor on His throne?

  • @dallonrobbins5078
    @dallonrobbins5078 ปีที่แล้ว

    Emperor's Grief, great name.
    This marine looks like a higher ranking marine. Perhaps the half silver/gray leg helps denote something. Perhaps its the mark of a veteran? The black on the helment looks like a command mark. So I feel like your marine could be a veteran sergeant.
    The gray could be because a founding member of the chapter is now half bionic, or it reffers to a traumatic event where half the chapter was turned to ash/and or dstoyed. Or it could reffer to half their homeworld being destroyed.
    I hope these ideas help. I love homebrew chapters 🔥

    hell, that same mentality is why i began painting warhammer models in the first place! I have had a bunch of injuries between my brain and my right hand, and the idea of losing fine motor control sucked, so i picked up painting 40k as a hobby. I think its so cool that you identified what you can improve on, and then actively went for it, with great success!
    You mentioned a tendency to overhighlight, and I think you did that on the cobbles on the base... it takes some of the attention away from the model. Instead of avoiding the final highlight step, just using a slightly darker grey would help keep the cobbles defined, but subdued to the background 👍

    So for lore hear me out. Might be a bit complicated but I think it plays. So the icon you went with for the chapter made me think of 1K sons and their armor was red in 30K. These are primaris marines which officially none are made from traitor geneseed but most people seem to agree that Cawl probably did anyway. What if the "Emperor's Grief" chapter is made from the geneseed of 1k sons that cawl got ahold of. We can go further with this and say the chapter is made from a blended geneseed of 1k sons and emperors children. The red and purple. During the heresy Malcador had a group of loyalist space marines that had come from traitor chapters he called the "Knights Errant" who used gunmetal grey power armor, which we can use as a tie in to the half grey leg.
    So what I am proposing is the Emperor's Grief chapter is a primaris only chapter made by Cawl with an experimental blend of EC and 1k sons geneseed. They keep the half grey leg as a nod to the members of traitor legions who remained loyal and fought for the Emperor in the Knights Errant. The red and purple can be references to the 1k sons and EC's original colors (vs current blue/yellow and pink/black0 and the name "Emperor's Grief' can be a a reference to the grief the emperor felt at his sons turning traitor and betraying the great crusade.

    First of all, that plinth is *chef's kiss*
    Second, with regard to the grey leg, maybe it represents some quirk in the chapter's geneseed, where the marines feel some small portion of the Emperor's sadness, leading to intense bouts of melancholy, during which they ritually scour some part of their normally colourful armour?

    I was surprised to see Purple on your list of things you didn’t enjoy painting. I’ve accidentally ended up painting 3 different forces purple, because my main army is blue, and my first army ever was Warmachine’s Circle Orboros, painting red armour with the most annoyingly intricate yellow trim ever.
    So when I need a break from painting blue power armour, blue, yellow and red are sort of off the list. Which leaves purple and green.
    Now I’ve got about 500 points of space marines, where I’ve highlighted purple up to orange. I’ve got an admech kill team with purple cloaks and pink highlights, and I’ve got some slaanesh daemons who are pink with purple shading.
