There's no such thing as a $400 high end keychain. There are just people to whom such money is pocket lint. Nice craft as always. Learnt a lot from this channel and did lots of stuff with the kids.
Exactly! It's complete and utter nonsense and definitely not for us "normies", but hey, it is what it is. Thanks for checking it out and glad the channel could be of service!
@@TheWeaversofEternity Lanyards, charms, zipper pullers, great way to personalise a school bag and gifts for school friends.
The same applies to lamborghini cars: pocket change prices for some people, and good luck to them.
400 that is car insurance, Food, these guys see crazy folks coming and they love hititng their pocket books lol 😂 😂
Exactly, only someone with no sense of what it actually would cost to make something like that would pay that much for this keychain. And sometimes you don't have to be rich to be disconnected from actual costs.
In the UK years ago we also got coloured flat plastic 'cords' called 'Scooby Doos' f I remember correctly, my brother and I used to make similar things.
As you say this is a basic crown sennit, a knot commonly used for starting a back splice in 3 or 4 strand rope or the first tuck of a 'Wall and Crown Knot'.
$440 for that is beyond 'daylight robbery it's grand larceny - I am making an infernally complicated bell rope for a friend, by this standard it should be worth about $50,000, as the old saying goes " A fool and their money ....."
Came here to say this these were all over the place, NYC, in the 70s with that flat plastic lacing chord
Agreed, it's definitely ridiculous and the people buying these keychains are definitely not buying them to appreciate the art of knot tying. Your friend is lucky to have a knot artisan like you. I think the true fools are not only the ones buying the overpriced keychain, but the ones going into debt for stuff like that! lol
In France too..in 90' it was super hype..
In Italy we also called them "scooby doo", but we did it with some colored nylon cord you could buy at hardware store (paracord wasn't that popular in our neck of the woods at that time). At one point they became so popular that you could literally walk in the store and ask "the cord for making scooby doos" and they knew what we ment.
Me and my friends used to make extra long ones and we used to whip the living sht out of each other with them... sometimes I miss those days...
It's called boondoggle. It was a big thing in the 90's.
When I was a kid in the 1960s, we made these out of that colorful flat plastic lanyard "string." Some of them were pretty elaborate...round braids the diameter of a quarter, spiral braids the size of a nickel. I wish I still had them so some idiot could pay me hundreds of dollars for them!!!!!
this is literally a lanyard i did this growing up ant camp ymca camp every where this is proof that western culture has evolved
You could always get more of that string now and bring it back to make thousands! Just have a killer marketing campaign! hahaha
Same here! I wish I still had the ones I made, made some pretty elaborate designs. Almost makes me want to visit a hobby shop and reconnect with making them all over again.
We had that in the 90s too. Called it gimp at camp. Now I have a bunch of kids chained up making me thousands in passive income….I mean…..;)
Edit: wtf as I sent this you said it in the video lol minus the kids in the basement….
standard arts & crafts activity in every summer day camp I went to as a kid back in the 70's. Time to start an Etsy store making these things and undercutting them by 100 bucks.
Best way to "flex" is make the keychain yourself.
Thank you for the fantastic video!
I agree! Thank you for watching and commenting!
Learned to make these in Boy Scouts.
I made these at summer camp into crosses. That was almost 40 years ago and can still do it today being I made so many in my spare time.
Ah yes, the crown sinnet is perfect for making crosses! I made a paracord cross keychain for my niece for her 1st Communion 🙂
How the heck are these even remotely worth $440? We made these for pennies on the dollar in scout camp just to pass the time.
I learned to make keychains like this when I was in Boy Scouts. I have one on my thumb drive that I made out of PET string and it looks nice, I think.
Den leader called boonedoggle?
Summer camp taught about every kid how to make that type of keychains.
I have made that, when I was at the Army.
I use a box braid like this for making necklaces out of micro cord. It takes ages, but makes for a nice result.
Absolutely dying at your commentary 😂💀 But seriously, totally agree with you on all of this. Thanks for the childhood throwback to gimp bracelets too! I chuckle about those so often now that I basically make fancy ones for a living.
hahaha, glad you like it! Gimp bracelets are a total core memory for me too. Brings me back to such a simpler time 😭
Ahh the good ol box knot 😮💨
Speaking of fashion forward, I loved the Zoolander clip playing in the back 😂😂
Hahaha... yessss!!! I'm glad someone noticed lol
we did it as kids in 2000s aswell, it seems like this is a reocurring trend every 20 years :D
Also it was plastic lanyard, called bužírka, which is literally plastic isolation around copper wire :D we did it with shoelaces aswell, you could use anything
Never seen a more pertinent use of the dr. Evil laugh!!!
Haha! I'll have to use the Dr. Evil laugh clip next time!
Sweet! I wanted to make this for my gf for Christmas. Thanks brotha!
Awesome! I'm sure she's going to love it, and you're very welcome!
$400 for a square scoubidou key ring (the basic one)? I made hundreds of them when I was a kid, it was fashionable in the 90s at home: plastic sheath to braid We can say that it is the precursor of paracord
Imagine you sold all of those back in the day for $400 a pop? Adjusted for inflation you'd be a bajillionaire! 🤑
Nice work but I also appreciate the movie references, especially the Nicolas cage lol 😂
Thanks and yes! A fellow Cage Rager! *hi-five! lol
I’ve done this weave as a kid using thin flat leather strips from Tandy.
They make overpriced leather ones as well haha, but yeah one made from nice leather would actually look really good.
Wait! You Went to Winona for Summer Camp? If not, we also did GIMP!
Made zipper pulls like this. Pull the strands out of the paracord and it makes a nice tight little fob.
For sure!
Overpriced paracord bracelets is what got me into learning the hobby in the first place, so I guess I owe them lmao. 😂
Hahaha, fair enough! I was looking more into that Miu Miu brand and of course they have overpriced nylon rope bracelets too. $395! What a deal! hahaha. Should I do a video on those too? lol
@@TheWeaversofEternityof course!
Me too!
I remember making box/barrel braid keychains out of gimp in 4th grade. Would sell them for $1. Guess i missed out on a money making method... lol
I remember my dad use to make this way back in the 70's but he used to use electrical cable.
Cool! That's quite a 70's thing to do with electrical cable haha!
Wow. This just inspired me to make 440 dollar keyechains. Thanks.
Good luck! 😁
I remember making those nylon box know key chains back in middle school I'd charge between $1-5 depending on length and I'd even let them choose between single solid color or 2 tone people would buy multiple and put it on the zipper tabs lol and for the people who knew how to do it just struggled to start the first knot I'd charge 50 cents little did I know someone would be charging 400+ for the same thing😂
yeah we used to make these back in the early 80's at the rec centers with the same flat plastic... we called them boondoggle... years later looking up the definition of the word is hilarious.
😂 not sure how many they are selling, CRAZY. Merry Christmas
What’s worse, they probably have it being produced is a sweat shop by ppl who are paid $1/hr
That could very well be true and if so it's quite sad 😥, but I guess that's the world we live in currently. I think the best we can do is not buy these kinds of products of course (not that we would in the first place!)
That’s what I came here to say! Miu Miu is making a fortune off the backs of sweat shop workers. 🤬
You should do a video on how to make a get back whip
I love how you made the video take longer than it takes to make the keychain in real-time, lol.
Haha, I had a lot of things I needed to get of my chest about it 😅
Duh. In the 80s we called these scoobidoos and every kids knew how to make them until the newest thing came around.
Im so glad that this is NOT the first video of yours, because you have me confirmation on your moral compass, with the intent that your an honest salesmen, not a price gauging prick like others I've seen
I remember as well making the box knots with gimp. I've been ask people if they do and they look at me like I'm crazy.
For ME,, I'm also looking at the time I make something, in the sense of how quickly it's don but with it also being properly constructed where it doesn't look like a kid smh cause in MY mind, TIME, is money. And I'm broke lol
The way I like to look at it is that you can always make more money, but you can't make more time, and the time you spend making something is time you can never get back so I will always personally appreciate a gift that someone has made much more than something that was simply bought. So I'd say that time can be worth more than money, depending on the individual. And hey if you're broke, that's just for now, you can always change that situation! 💪
5:00 at my summer camp, we called these boondoggle key chains.
Boondoggle! I actually forgot that they were also called by that name until you mentioned it. And now that you did, I just remembered that's what they were called in Napoleon Dynamite lol, great movie. Thanks for checking the video out!
Awesome camp reference! You are awesome.
haha thank you! 🙏
Haha. I have made many of these over the years thanks to your instructional video.
Glad I could be of service!
Love the video!! Well all the videos. If you are going to spend a lot do it on a bed mattress!! I bought a top end tempur-pedic mattress and no more pain and sleep like a baby 😀
Thank you! Really glad to hear you do and yes! That is a great way to spend your money as we spend almost a 1/3rd of our lives in bed, so why not spend it where you'll actually use it?? Thanks for watching and commenting!
I've never spent that much a paracord keychain, OR made one myself, but I did once find one on Amazon for maybe $8(?), which had a Thor's Hammer emblem worked into it. (I could pull my keys out of my pocket and growl, "ASSEMBLE.")
8 bucks is more than reasonable for a paracord Thor's hammer keychain, in fact considering how much time those take to make $8 is a good deal. And I like the idea of quoting Cap every time you grab your keys haha, I just might have to re-visit the Thor's Hammer paracord keychain lol
Don't really need a key fob, but it looks so cool. I guess I could decorate my backpack with it. Yup, gonna make this and I already have the materials laying around.
Beautiful mala in the background. Did you make that too?
Would make for a cool backpack decoration for sure! As for the mala, no, I bought that on Amazon as a set decoration
i put a wooden dowel in mine to make in stiffer made it years ago
Ohh, that's a pro move! Made a set of fidget toy nunchucks using the round crown sinnet and I put a nail inside for added weight so it's definitely a good addition!
Oh my god!!, Tim!! I pissed my pants laughing so hard 🤣😂, maybe a little…?! That was an awesome start with this video, you made my day!! Another reason why we love you 👍🏽👍🏽, awesome job with the editing !! My brother, you got me!! HOOK, LINE AND SINKER!!!❤❤👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽 ❤Strength and Honor brother!! May the god lord shine upon you and your family with blessings be well!! Looking forward to your next episode!!👍🏽❤️💯🇺🇸
Hector! Hahaha... really glad you liked the video brother. Glad you like my humor even though I don't think I'm really all that funny lol. Have a great weekend my friend, all the best to you and your family! 🙏♥
Yessss someone else remembers gimp lol. any color only like $1.00 a bundle. Make keychains like this of different sizes and use the long one's and you and ya friends go around smacking each other in the leg with it LOL.
hahaha! We never did that back in the day with our gimp bracelets and it never occurred to me to make a long whip lol, I probably would have gotten in trouble haha
I made one of these with a much sturdier key ring almost 15 years ago. It's still kicking around at my dad's. He uses it to lend keys to people because it's so awkward they can't fail to return it
Since the release of this video the high end keychain price has been reduced by 100$ and now costs just 340$. That's a steal. 🤣 I've got to admit they hide the ends of the paracord pretty well. 🤔
Haha, that might have been a Black Friday deal or something lol, but yes I agree, they did a great job with that, still not worth the amount they're charging though haha
3:28 Why not go in a circle pattern. Almost like closing a cardboard box, one lid over the other. Just fold one strand over the other and go around many times.
That's how I do it and it's way faster. Though for demonstration purposes I think the way of tying in this video is very clear, visually.
@ oh ok.
You can definitely do that, in fact I have tied the crown sinnet in that way before, but for whatever reason when I was shooting the video I just did it the way I did haha
@ yeah, I know I get it. Like the other guy said, for demonstration purposes you did it that way.
So why not show 1 string × 1 string square vs. 1 × 1 round vs 1 × 2 rectangle or spiral or 1 × 3 rectangle or spiral? Basic Boy Scouts circa early '80s Boondoggle.
I used to make that stuff as a kid
Same!
This is crazy, i box braid all my ”too short” leftovers, you're telling me im sitting on a gold mine??
I think you very well could be! It's all about the marketing... just remember "You don't sell the steak, you sell the sizzle!" 😆
Same! haha. its so easy to make!
@@Uranium232 we gotta get a business goin, our profit margins would be more like canyons
May I know what mm Paracord you're using? Thank you 👍🏻🙏🏻
I make my own as well, and I agree it worth more made your self
You can always make more money, but you can't make more time. So spending your time that you can never get back to make something for someone is definitely worth more! Thanks for checking the video out and commenting 🙏
Yo man where do you get those really cool beads from? 😂
Lol I was in art class with one of my best friends too, it was a blast, we actually got better cuz we were competing with eachother, lol the teacher graded just me and him on a curb cuz we were better than everyone in the class lol
Hello
What is this key holder called please ?
What would the process be to make it one color on two sides, and one color on the other two sides though? I do not believe it would suddenly justify it being 480 doll hairs, but still, has to be more complex, no? By the way, I found a paracord bracelet with a compass, whistle and a knife built in to it, for literally only 2.13 EUR. So close to what it would cost to make it yourself, but it is obviously mass produced,so they can (and wonderfully do) sell it at that price.
I know that knot.... I make that in huge lengths as it's incredibly stretchy and durable...... I use it for rock face scaling 😂
Cool! Didn't know it could be used for something like that
... well and I recognize the Balatro soundtrack.
This is a military paracord project we did while we were in A.I.T. classes
Cool! What other kinds of paracord projects did you do?
I learn this while I was locked up learned how to do bracelets also
A great way to pass the time, I hope making those crafts brought you a sense of peace or just benefited you in a positive way during that time!
@@TheWeaversofEternity Yes definitely it has thank you
Hi! I think it'd b a very useful video if you weaved a blaze bar belt with Titan paracord (original and XT) for a (levy's) jeans pants?
Extra points if buckle is useful (eg. fire starter), sturdy (ferro might snap off by itself?) , without bulging out (thin is good), or scratching wtv it's in front of your pelvis (guitar) - even better. THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!!
An interesting idea for sure! I'll give it some thought, thank you for the suggestion!
This man owns a Sebenza and some Peña knives. He definitely isn't against spending some money on the higher end stuff.
This is true, I realized I misspoke in the video when I said "I don't own anything high end", what I meant was that "I don't own anything high fashion", but I did follow that up with the fact that I have no problem with spending a bit more on something if you're really into it. That being said I think there's a big difference between spending a $440 on a keychain vs $440 on a knife haha
@TheWeaversofEternity I absolutely agree. And as a fellow knife enthusiast, No judgement. I have also spent a ridiculous amount on a hobby other people find ridiculous.
Well, as the saying goes , there's an a$$ for every seat. Great post as always, thanks.
haha, I haven't heard that saying before and I like it! lol Thanks for stopping by as always and checking it out 🙏
Could you please show how to finish it off without melting the ends? It looks like one difference between this and the Miu Miu one is that they don't have melted ends. Thanks
Instead of going all the way over with the first strand of the last knot, cut it so that it doesn't quite reach past the end of the knot, then melt it onto the strand it's sitting on top of. The next strand will go over it and hide that melted end, which will be melted in place in the same way. Do this for three of them, and then on the last one, push it underneath the first strand, pull the first strand back to reveal enough of that last strand end to fuse it down, and then let go of that first strand so it covers that fused end as well. Think of it like closing up a cardboard box where you overlap each flap until you get to the last one that needs to be tucked under the first. Now, it's going to be a little difficult, but there's another trick to help. Tighten the last four or five knots a little tighter, and you'll have some excess length on your last strands. Once you fuse them down, you can pull that excess back down into those extra tight knots so you end up with no extra length and even tension on all of your knots. It may take you a bit to figure out how tight to get everything and how much extra length you need, but it's fairly straightforward once you've tried it. An alternative method to a lighter is a soldering iron/woodburning iron with a flat chisel tip, you can be more precise with where the heat goes and melt only where necessary to fuse the strands in place (it also works well to cut paracord by melting through a strand, as the ends are fused in the process and won't fray).
Part of the reason why you don't see those melted strands on the Miu Miu version is because they use hollow sheaths instead of the complete paracord, which is easier to tuck and hide the fused areas...they likely use a tool similar to a soldering iron to reach in and fuse the strands underneath while keeping it hidden. There's also one made of leather, and they probably had to glue or stitch the strands down after tucking them in. Each strand is actually a flat strip of leather that's been rolled into a tube and sewn together (think straw wrapper), and when braided, those leather tubes lay flatter. This paracord version will look similar to the Miu Miu version, but it won't be quite the same unless you gut your paracord (remove the inner strands). You can still braid the knot in the same way, except the gutted paracord will lay a little flatter and look arguably better because the finished product will be more square...depends on your preference though. Tie the knots tight and it'll look completely different from the Miu Miu version, keep them loose if that's the look you're going for. But in the process, see what it looks like when you do tighten them down a lot, it's a much more compact pattern and looks nice too.
I completely understand your point, and the price is just ridiculous.
There is one thing to give credit to, though.
The ends are not melted but somehow woven on the designer thing you referred to.
I do not know how they did this, but yeah.
That's a great point! I didn't quite go into that and I haven't really been able to figure that out based on the pictures. If I can find a video of the keychain I might be able to see it better. If I manage to figure that out, I'll do a follow up!
I do leather craft so I'm almost in the right business. Guess I could make a handbag and try to sell it for $10k.
Wait, so you're telling me for the past 10+ years, the keychain I made is worth $400? Mine is even 2 colors, actually I have a big one for keys & a small one for my pocket flashlight. Jeesh, that's gotta be $700 worth of paracord in my pocket :D
You definitely have $700 worth of paracord in your pocket, in fact, it's a great bargaining tool if someone ever tries to rob you, just hand them the keychain and tell them it's worth that much! 🤣
@@TheWeaversofEternity next time I am on the train in the city I'll remember that 🤣
If someone would show me such a keychain and say, I just bought it for $440.., I think, I wouldn't be able to keep a straight face... 😅
haha same here, I'd think they were joking lol
What did you put on the desk, some sort of tape?
Yeah that was just a piece of two sided sticky tape to keep the paracord in place, not necessary for you unless you're video recording haha
I made a dog leash with this design.. double corded.. should I charge 4k?
Why didn’t you put the clip through both pieces of string? I’ve had para cord wear through a split ring and we used to make these out of that plastic cord. And if you didn’t put it through both strings, it would just break.
Awesome! What is this tool you use to smoothen at 5:57?
It's called a Marlinspike, or knotter's tool.
@ thanks!
@@CarryQuandaries You're welcome 😃
That particular marlinspike is from Patrick Ober of Obermetalworks. It's made of titanium and the price reflects it, but we have much more affordable options on the Paracord Weavers online shop. Thanks for checking the video out!
Gracias
De nada!
Now coat the whole thing in superglue and let it dry and you’ll have a Kubotan.
This does not work as well as you think it does, trust me. Lol
@ i’ve made several of these and they are as solid as the ABS ones you buy.
I've been thinking about making a paracord kubotan video for years. I've seen version where you wrap a stainless steel bolt in paracord as well. Perhaps the superglue along with the bolt would make for a worthy self-defense tool? Hmmmm... you've got me thinking now!
Bro, we made these at summer camp. 😂
You should do one with a twist....
I'll do that one for the next overpriced keychain! haha
Yours has that reflective tracer. I'd say it is worth at least $1,000! 😆 🤣 😂
LOOL! This is true. I should perhaps roll it in gold leaf, that could easily bump it up to $10K! 🤣
we called them Boondoggle.
Boondoggle! That's fun to say haha, I think I heard that term for the first time in Napoleon Dynamite. I never realized they were the same thing as gimp until much later.
Just as a side note my wife went to High School with Nicolas Cage (Nicolas Coppola is his real name) and she has her photo on the same page in their year book because her surname started with C. She remembers him as being weird and always wearing a singlet. My claim to paracord fame is I still use a key fob I made from paracord when I was on night shift in the United Nations Headquarters company post on a UN peacekeeping operation way back in 2007.
Now THAT is so cool! If you couldn't tell already, I'm a huge fan of Nic Cage. Also him always being in a singlet doesn't even surprise me lol. That's also really cool with the keychain you made at the UN, did you by any chance make it in the same blue they use for their logo? That would have been perfect haha
@@TheWeaversofEternity It's in green... army green. It's all I could find. I was on radio monitoring duty so after midnight things would get quiet and I would practice my knots and I also taught some of my friends on the night shift with me how to do splicing and whipping etc. I also put a Turks Head on my rifle so I could easily identify it on the gun rack when we were eating our meals in the mess. I once caught an Officer picking my weapon, by mistake, and when I challenged him he said it was his and I asked him to teach me how to make a Turks Head knot. He hadn't noticed and was very apologetic.
I’ve made the plastic ones
Used to make things like that for fun when i was going to elementary or equal school. 400 bucks ehh
Ah, gimp keychains, bracelets and other items. They were fun.

As someone who makes and sells these kinds of things on the small scale, I’d feel like a criminal charging 10 bucks for this, let alone 440.
Well, you shouldn't feel like a criminal if you're charging an amount that makes it worth your time. Don't sell yourself short as it only brings down the perceived value of handmade goods by a single person for a small business. I would DEFINITELY say it's criminal at $440 though hahaha
Just for fun, put a price of 50 bucks on one. See if anyone buys it.
1:09 The have at least three holes, otherwise you wouldn't be able to wear them.
True, but I have a pair that's approaching 5 holes now... I should probably throw them out lol
@@TheWeaversofEternity save money where can!
I made these in occupational therapy on the psych ward.
14 seconds ago is insane
Haha, thanks for being so quick!
I haven't even watched this video yet and just looking at that key chain, I know exactly how to make it.
If anyone is interested I'd be more than happy to specially make this key chain for you for the low low price of $150 😂
I did watch the video after making my comment. Good video
I hear you!
I mean, didn't we just have a man buy a banana that was taped to a wall for $ 6.2 million and then turn around and eat the banana?
Oh man! I watched a couple of TH-cam videos about that, absolute insanity. I think the real story behind that banana though is that the buyer of that "art piece" has the rights to reproduce the banana taped to a wall, which means they can remake this art piece as many times as they want. Therefore, they could theoretically donate these "art pieces" to galleries each time for a $6.2M tax write off! It's brilliant when you think about it hahaha
I made and sold these for 8 to 10 bucks
If you charge it and they pay, that's on them.
Things are only worth what someone is willing to pay for them. If someone is willing to spend $400 on this and they know what they are getting then they are not being scammed.
Maybe it's @400 of labor costs?
Hmmm... well it probably takes about 15-20 mins of labor to make one of these, so those are some pretty steep labor costs! lol
Yikes! $400 for a kids “Friendship Bracelet” fob‼️ A question, do you have a Kindle Paperwhite strap that I can make? I looked at your video list but didn’t find one (I gave up!)…
I don't have a strap tutorial for something exactly like the Kindle Paperwhite, but if your paper white has a plastic or silicone case on it, my cellphone strap tutorial might work for it th-cam.com/video/0roJkVWT1lg/w-d-xo.htmlsi=1Wck4P986uurvWyW
If you don't have attachment points for the cord, you could always poke/drill some holes in it if you don't mind taking it that far haha. Hope it helps or gives you some ideas!
We have dozens of those at work in a box, nobody wants them.
At first I thought maybe it was a typo… like they actually meant $4.40 ….. but nope! These people are nucking futs!!!!! I mean seriously…. WHO PAYS THESE KINDS OF PRICES???? I wish I could be so fortunate to be rich enough to not have to worry about the prices of things I want!
Nucking futs indeed Holly! I think there is definitely a class of people that just buy expensive things because they associate high prices with it being good, exclusive, or high quality (regardless of if it is or not) and it is what it is. I think it's best not to concern ourselves with what other people are doing most of the time haha
@ ROFLMAO…. I have to agree with you there Tim!!! Hope you had a great weekend….
There are a lot of things that I could make at lower nominal cost. The whole point of paying someone else is 1. so I don't have to make it 2. opportunity cost of tine.🤦♀️🤦♀️🤦♀️
You did the first step wrong both go through the key ring
The one that was $440 is leather. not paracord. It is still only about $1 a yard.
The page I was looking at in the video was a nylon rope keychain, the link is here: www.baltini.com/en-ca/products/miu-miu-cord-and-nylon-trick-3?variant=41768331739233&gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAiA3ZC6BhBaEiwAeqfvyiR9U_1Ub6nT7DCuW9RwsO8EOx_GhrynKPl_HiXEqQMRU5WyV5E5ihoCWXoQAvD_BwE
400 for a Keychain? That's 4 custom tailored shirts, or 4 pairs of selvage jeans, or a pair of hand made boots...
Was making those keychains back in the 90's, right after I sewed my first belt, way before they were even allowed
Nice!
