ASTP stands for Army Specialized Training Program. I love listening to these interviews. I grew up listening to the stories of relatives and My Dad’s friends who served. My Maternal Grandfather was in His 30’s when He was drafted prior to Pearl Harbor and trained as a member of a anti tank company with the 84th Infantry division at Camp Howes Texas. He was medically discharged because His feet swelled up on long marches. In the late 1940’s He suffered a crippling stroke and never walked again. Three of My Dad’s older Brother’s were in the Army and one was a combat engineer in 289th Regiment of the 75th Infantry Division. He said that if a guy was over 20 they thought of Him as a old man because the majority of the people were very young.
