YES...I made a mistake placing only one Daimyo...should've not been able to do that...sorry! I know better, just a slip-up...again, sorry!

+Sam Healey No need to apologise, a simple mistake! I only mentioned it in case you wanted to add an annotation for people wanting to learn the rules from your review. Thanks for everything you do with the Dice Tower Sam, and looking forward to meeting you at the UK Games Expo next year!

+Sam Healey Should have just placed the double Daimyo on the first throw anyways!

Nice review. I agree that this is a fun little game. At around the 4:35 mark, you place one Daimyo on the castle to lock it in. I had thought that on each roll you had to complete one line, that you could not just place one die on a symbol on one line. You either have to complete one line or roll again. This is how I have been playing, makes the game a little more challenging.

I've had this game for about a year and it's one of my favorite light games. The only thing I did was modify my cards with a Sharpie by placing dots at the bottom of the cards to show how many cards belong to each clan. The symbols for each clan are just a little confusing and I'm color blind just enough to sometimes mess me up, as I'm sure others are.

I picked this up when it was first out. I liked the Dice mechanic from Elder Signs (credited to Reiner) but felt it was too long a game. This is the perfect length and great to play while waiting on people :)

OK Sam, I'm sold. You've been pushing this one for a few weeks. Looks like a great filler adding it to my Cool Stuff wish list.

Thanks for the review Sam... I was on the fence to get this as a light game, but I think I will pick it up... I'm a huge Memoir 44 and Battle Cry fan... I know Memoir 44 is one of your go to games, and I'm also hankering to play The Great War... I trust your taste in gaming.

Looks like a fun little game. I'd like to see a enhanced version where you have different Generals/Clans to play as that have a unique ability or set of dice and maybe add in some kind of a small card mechanic (thinking King of Tokyo with equipment, mercenaries etc).

Just picked it up and was happy to see a Dice Tower review of it. Mainly watched to go over the rules after i read them to make sure I understood them correctly. I figured the early Daimyo play was a mistake but everything else about the video was great. Between this and the new Tiny Tinas Robot Tea Party we have two great filler games to take up some time.

Kind of a elder sign type of feel. I like it

I bought this game and made a similar mistake while we played it. We were allowed to fill partial rows but once you put a die on a row you have to complete that row in order to continue with another one. The game ran smooth and fast. I will try it with the correct rules but I suggest to play it like this. It works great.

You're probably aware of this Sam, but this game is a re-theming of Risk Express.
I don't have the rules in front of me, but whenever we played Risk Express, we always played that you had to complete a FULL ROW at a time, so what you did with assigning the two red dice one at a time, wouldn't have been allowed. Don't know if we were playing correctly though, and they may well have changed the rules for Age of War for all I know.
Thanks for the continual great reviews though Sam!

+vic7000 Yes your right. I double checked as I was second guessing myself. The rules state If the symbols of one or more rolled dice match all the symbols of a battleline the player may fill that battleline. Still great review matey keep them coming :)

I bought the game when it came out. I am like you Sam, it's a great filler game. You did a great job of explaining it except the Daimyo miss placement of 1 instead of 2. I wish the cards where a little thicker or maybe a thin cardboard weight. I love games about Japan, even if it's just pasted on.

So, to be clear he should not be able to place only one daymio. He had to complete the entire line in a toss. Right?

This game if you have very little time to play games. Otherwise get Elder Sign for a longer but more complete game with basically the same mechanics (plus extras) but better.

Risk Express. It is the exact same game, this is kind of a "remake" with the japanese theme pasted in. Even the numbers and the kind of army needed to conquer are the exact same.

I usually agree with Sam's reviews, but this was a total miss for me. I actually came here because I was so angry at the game that I wanted to hear somebody else trash it. I picked up Age of War completely blind just because it was under $10. I have been playing a few dice games like King of New York and Tiny Epic Galaxies and hoped that this game was at least in the same league even though I knew it would be lighter. The game was horrible. Because you have to re-roll all of your dice after every line is filled, once you have chosen the card that you are trying to get there are very few decisions to make. You are just rolling and rolling and hoping that the rest of the symbols come up. There are no player or card powers to mitigate chance, just your choice of castles to attack. This would almost be good enough to be a light filler, except that it ends up being very hard to get any except the 1-point cards, so the game goes on much longer than it remains interesting. I have a few games that I bought and only played once or twice because they weren't great, but this is the first one that I stopped about 3/4 of the way through the first play in disgust at the gameplay. This game is very similar to Yahtzee, and believe that I would rather play Yahtzee.

I added in the focus rule from Elder Sign. It makes it reasonably fun. But ultimately its a dice rolling game, its never going to be that complicated.

    • @TheRmm1976
      @TheRmm1976 5 ปีที่แล้ว

Looking on BGG some have suggested a house rule to not have to re-roll all of the dice on a castle. And also there is a solo variant which is interesting.
