    The CCD! Some of my earliest videos on my channel were shot with that! It fell over on the tripod one day and that was that.

    The good old smd Crapacitors from the early 90's. I've just recapped a CCD-FX500 from 93 (on my channel) the only reason I did it is because the camera was service in 2002 for 150€ and a "cap kit" was done on it, mine the DC/DC converter had every cap bad. Also they're was a bad one in the Y section and it was loosing vertical sync. Now works like new 😃

    These videos are like WWW throw down competitions between you and the article being worked on. Can he save it? But also your running commentary and mental gymnastics deciding when its time to quit is so Useful. The adult grown up assessment and truth is these may not last and you have to balance that with whether the customer has realistic expectations. Your assessing the client as much as that device, inquiring what they plan to do with it if you get it working.. how long they realistically expect it to work.

      I spent enough years in the business to know when it was time to cut and run. I made a few exceptions over the years and they came back to bite me in the ass.

      Dave truly is educating us (kids) in what's practical, while entertaining us. You can tell he's been around the block a time or two.. this isn't his first rodeo. I get all excited and engrossed in the repair job while he's subtly thinking in the background whether its worth taking it to the next level. I'm nodding my head and listening to it all. Man I feel smarter after watching one of these, I love the full sized VCR or DVD recorder videos more.. but its all Great content.

    I have a Philips VHS camera (full size) and I changed every single capacitor in it took me 3 days 8 hours a day to get them all replaced. But it was worth it picture looks like I bought the camera yesterday. A lot of the Caps like 25out of around 60 where leaking badly. Those stupid capacitors.

      That's nice. Still fail to understand why anyone wants to use a 30+ year old camera for anything.

      @@12voltvids I do because I hate those stupid vhs filters to make something look retro. They just make vhs look even more bad than it was. But the Camera has a strange problem...when I plug it in to a tv with it's integrated av output it plays and records in color but when I start the camera without the av plugged in it only records and plays in black and white. Why?¿

    the smaller board under the top pcb , is containing the head amp section , that board has like maybe 10 caps , if u have a hot air station and a bunch of ipa and qtips you should be good fixing this one

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes I know where the head preamp is, and it is probably full of bad caps too, but with the DC to DC converter being bad, this one is getting expensive to repair real quick. It shuts down with low battery when the input voltage is 6.5v or under. DC-DC converter needs a recap as well as head amp, and owner has not authorized a full rebuild.

      I was wondering about a hot air station myself.. but I think Dave said something about them being expensive a long time ago, and perhaps not worth the extra work required to use one. He budgets his time judiciously and has a natural aversion to obsession that I truly admire. I'd love to listen to his ideas and thoughts on hoarding old crap that hasn't or can't be fixed. I know a lot of people that can't let go stuff when they should.

      I only hang onto some old crap if I figure there are parts that can be of use. I regularly take stuff to the recycle center.

      @@12voltvids I wonder if you've ever visited someone who has piles of stuff in their shop, came home.. and immediately thought its time to prune a bit of the inventory. At the same time I've some relatives that claim they lived through the depression and would never think of junking just about anything! Kids are very impressionable.. and I worry they might not live for the today and hold on to the past too much.

      I don't visit anyone these days. Haven't for a year now. Other than going to work I don't get out much. On nice days i take the Harley out for a ride or I am working away in the shop or my office doing video conversion work or editing.

    The video heads are clogged (or bad) which is why the video is getting muted. Very common problem. That's why you can see the picture when you scan ff/REW and hit pause. Clean the heads and it should play properly. yes, a lot of caps probably need to be replaced - but clogged video heads is the main problem.

    • @12voltvids

      @joey_after_midnight 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Duty cycle probably protects them when they are new. People didn't tend to run camcorders like VCR's for hours on end.. they probably ran them for 20-30 minutes spread out over long periods of time. Using them in a personal you tube studio mode or as substitute webcams probably wasn't common until long after they left the market.

    So even some replacement caps had gone bad? Crappy brand, underrated for temp/voltage? Caps that size seem to be much more prone to failure too, but...

      Nichion commissioned a study on Electrolytic failure rates, and most failed in a sharp fall off curve after 5-7 years of continuous use.. if they were run at their rated temperature. That's statistical, so some would last longer, some less time.. but pretty much most would fail after that. They also studied running at higher temps and they failed in 1-2 years most times.. so they all had definite life spans. These devices are 10-20 yrs or older. Exploding and degassing modes is a different matter.. but I don't think they cared much if they lasted that long. The device would probably be long junked or consigned to the dump. The change over to Solid state caps helped some, but there were purposes for which Electrolytic capacitors were the only choice. Most stuff today takes the filter caps into the IC chips themselves as much as possible, but throw off a lot more heat.. so you see more and more large heat sinks on modern gear.
