I just love the character design in this series, especially Ogata's cold, dead eyes and expression... Those rare moments when his eyes light up and his expression changes...
I think all the characters from the 7th division have the same dead eyes (with some exception) but I don't remember a scene where ogata's eyes lightens
I’m sure Ogata’s brother had good intentions when he told him that there shouldn’t be anyone in this world who won’t feel guilt over killing people, but to him, I bet it sounded like his whole existence just got denied. I wish there could have been a way for these brothers to get along...
I agree with you, though when he shot his brother, I think it was more of Ogata seeing if he does end up feeling guilt. Since he hasn't felt any emotion his entire life, he simply killed him to see if he'd feel anything. It's why he asked his father before he killed him if he had a chance 'to be happy' as well. If his brother got killed, would his father begin putting his attention onto him more? Would he give him the love and affection he gave his brother? And if he did, would that change how Ogata felt, would it make him 'happy'? When Ogata says 'chitatap' and 'hinna' to Asirpa, he looks just like a robot trying to emulate human emotion. Like he's trying to feel what others are feeling but just can't, which is pretty heartbreaking. It's why Ogata hates the idea of 'pure' people. Because if he accepts the fact that there are people in this world who are 'pure and clean, and never do bad things,' he would be admitting that there's something wrong with him. It's why he says to Tsurumi, 'there's no such thing as noble blood, or dirty blood, either.' He wants to think everyone is the same as him, that everyone is as messed up as he is.
The creepiest thing about this is Ogata’s eyes . He shows no emotion when his brother hugs him or when he murders him . It shows how much of a sociopath he is .
it's said that way strategically to get you to comment and also to get guys like me to point out the geniuses of the title considering the content/video is about betrayal and they as essentially betraying us by having that title. I love the way the brother remains standing after being shot, it’s almost as if the superstition of his purity came true. Plus it shows how he’ll never disappear, even from Ogata’s nightmares.
His brother isn’t still standing he slumped to his knees and fell. Him standing and staring down ogata was a hallucination of his suppressed guilt. Guilt that he didn’t think he would have
Ogata kept hallucinating about Yuusaku because he felt guilty about killing him. And he felt guilt because deep down, he recognized that he threw aside the only family member that truly loved him. Had Ogata believed in his brother's honesty, things could have been completely different. *edit: grammar
because for some reason he wanted to be a psychopath and convinced himself he was, while in reality that was not the case and the guilt he refused to recognise consumed him
Golden Kamuy has been so underrated idk why. It’s pretty educational considering it introduced me to the existence of Ainu people, the Abashiri prison, Japan’s war with Russia, and “Immortal Fujimoto.”
Ogata was already detached from touch of affection and care before the war ever since his mother went mad and start to project her illusion of her husband to child Ogata and kept telling him he will become a great officer like his father. No wonder he become messed up.
I wasn't expecting him to shoot him. I honestly expected him to stab him when he was hugging Ogata. But we already saw Ogata shooting his brother in season 2 tho. This episode added more depth to his backstory and it also showed that Ogata's not as unbothered as he pretends to be, given that he's haunted by his brother.
he actually doesn't turn around to stare at him. you can see him slumping to his knees facing forward with the flag clasped in his hands, yet when he turns around to stare at ogata, he's standing up straight and the flag is gone. That's not what actually happened on the battlefield, but rather a symbolic personification of Ogata's suppressed guilt for killing him manifesting as his brother turning to stare back accusingly at his killer, like Ogata believes he should have
@@bj_cat103Fun fact : The fact that he dreamed about his past with Yuusaku instead of his parent whom he also killed indicated that he felt frustration and guilt over Yuusaku's death. @@hteteaindraykyaw996 yes, that's why he's a schizophrenic with childhood trauma and not a psychopath, the latter would never understand and his brother knew he wasn't truly one, he was just gaslighting himself in believing he was
I see it more as a child who didn’t receive any love from his parents and is therefore unable to feel compassion towards others, which is why he can’t feel guilt for killing people. I believe he does, however, feel some guilt for killing his brother, but he suppresses this emotion and denies it so that he can believe that everyone, in truth, doesn’t feel any guilt.
Ogata is a psychopath, but since it's times when people didn't even know what that really was, he thinks everyone is like him When his brother talks to him about guilt, he assumes the brother is wrong, but, in reality, he is the only one who doesn't feel that guilt
@@bj_cat103 you could interpret Ogata killing his brother also as him acknowledging what his brother says and because it is opposite to his own ideals felt threatened by it and I think that’s why he actually felt guilt over killing his brother, unlike his father, who we do not see haunt him, but with his brother turning around to face him, face his action. Because his brother was someone that actually contradicted Ogata’s beliefs, and made an emotional impact on Ogata.
Ogata and sugimoto are the best characters no doubt. I wish there was an anime about ww1. Its amazing when they show scenes of the russo-japanese war, or when they show how good of a sniper Ogata is.

SPOILERS FOR THE FINAL ARC: But at his last moments, even if it was under the effect of the venom he felt guilt for killing his brother, the only person that ever loved him
The guilt heavily implies that he never was a sociopath, and I think that's why he pulls the trigger on himself. Suddenly realizing that you lived your whole life lying to yourself about what you are would definitely be devastating, especially when you constantly tried to pull others down to your same level. In a way he's just like a wen kamuy.
In oppossite directions too. Ogata looking less human and Tsurumi looking more human. And yet their journeys are inverted, Ogata coming to realize there was a fraction of humanity in him... And Tsurumi losing it all...
