I used my first screw on retainer the other day for 18mm. What I did was glue the retainer on first. Then I used a spent motor and put it in to where it stuck out about 1/2in past the retainer and taped it in place. I then put in glue and the engine block and pulled the old motor out before the glue dried. simple and a perfect fit.
Screw the motor retainer cap onto the threaded section that goes over the tube. Set the motor inside the motor retainer then use that to determine where the thrust ring should go. If you had waited any longer in this video you would not have been able to move the trust ring and you would have had to scrap the motor tube and start over.
