Yamaha 360 MX top end build and other repairs

  • In this video I finish the top end build on the Champion Framed Yamaha 360 RT2MX Flat tracker. I also start the cleaning process of the fuel tank so I can seal it in the future. I check the head for flatness, finish the port chamfering, and install the reed valve manifold. Then I check and adjust the timing before installing the cylinder head.

      Hey Steve, don't think the HS1 will be ready yet. The engine maybe, but there is a lot to do to it besides that. But I am planning another ride or two before the snow fly's.

    Hi Dale, I spent parts of my childhood in Tulsa late 64 until 68. I lived just off Pine st on Oklahoma st right near the Airview drive in. Went to Mckinley elementary school and later Hamilton jr high.

    I moved to Tulsa from Akron Ohio in 1972 to attend Spartan Aeronautics. Bought eight bikes and three ATV’s from K&N in those 52 years. It’s only a couple miles from my house here in Jenks. It’s cool to be able to make that connection with you.

      That is cool for sure, my family lived in the Nowata area (they called it green country back in the day), they are all gone now, and I moved to Montana as my last permeant change of station with the Air Force before I retired. I have been back a couple times, but just can't take the heat and humidly any longer. Still have a sister in Tulsa and Bartlesville.

    I don't remember when K&N came to Wichita, KS. I started racing motocross in 1975. Phil McDonald is the name I remember owning the shop in Wichita. He road raced for the factory. I remember the guy in the shop was Johnny and he was a flat tracker. We use to go to the night motocross races in OK city. Nicky Nickels, of Nickels Honda in Wichita, KS, and others to go down to OK. to ride the night races. Nicky use to ride a YZ125 with a water-cooled head for KP Powers. His Yamaha shop was in El Dorado, KS.

      I guess I didn't hear about them in Wichita, Norm Mcdonald was the owner of K & N Yamaha in Tulsa, I worked for Southeast Suzuki in Coffeyville Ks, for several years. I said in the video I bought this one in 72, after looking at the bill of sale it was Feb. 74, the engine was a 72 engine, maybe that's where I got that number. Yes, growing up in Okla. at the time there were several tracks running at night. Lots of fun back then.

    I love how you take me back to my youth. I watch your videos and I learn more every time. At my end of my time working on motorcycles I stopped riding when I saw two of my friends get hit by car's.

      That is so sad that you lost your friends like that, I am not a big street rider, when I do its mostly back roads were the traffic is light. I too have lost a friend and had some really injured for the rest of their life. Thank you for watching and glad these videos help return you to your youth, I sure enjoy thinking about how things were and still playing with these old bikes.

    Good morning Dale, that engine looks better than new. Next time you do new sheathing, try spraying the wires and inside the sheath with some Awesome spry cleaner. I use it for doing a rewire. It stays slippery for a while and the wires go in real good. Another great job buddy. I am going to attempt to weld my tank half back together today.

    Hi Dale, you can 3d print those grommets using TPU filament. Amazon has printers for a very reasonable price. I purchased a Creality Ender 3 3D Printer, I'm not very good at it but it sure filles the gap.

    Dale, one more bit on useless info. When K&N Yamaha sold, it was bought by Malcon Smith. It was the first bike shop he owned. that building is now gone and Malcon Smith has a huge new super store only a mile from me now, Malcom Smith Motorsports.

      So, he bought the property and building but not the dealership. I have seen pictures of his place now. It's like a museum. There are some TH-cam videos on it.

      @@montana2strokeracer ,he did buy the dealership, it was called Malcom Smith’s K&N Yamaha. He dropped the K&N after a couple years.
      K&N air filters is still here in Riverside, Ca. But it was sold to another company years and years ago.

    Dale, I like your videos. Have you ever installed a Vape 12 volt system on a DT or RT? A lot of people are installing them now. If not, it would be a great video to watch.

      Hey Jeff, no sir, have not messed with any of the vape systems. I have put MX cdi systems on point and flywheel bikes. I have heard good and bad about vape but have no experience with it. The big drawback to me is the cost. Pretty pricey I will see were the journey takes me, but I don't think I want to pay the price at this time.

    I always learn new tricks watching your channel. I appreciate how thorough you are, for example soldering the new connectors after crimping. What brand of screwdrivers do you use..I don't recognize the black and blue handle?

      Hey Brent, I have a set of Vessel for JIS, the ones you are referring to are also JIS, but the name is worn off, pretty sure I got them from amazon. I just looked on amazon and I don't see them there any longer. I really like the #3 one it's the one I use most often, and they are magnetic.

    Holy Cow, Dale! Is that bench top like a 1" thick steel slab ?? Or is it some substrate covered in sheet metal ?? That engine cradle hardly moved when you were working with it. I'm definitely jealous of that thing.

      Hey Johnnie, my bench is made from 2 x 6's, then one mounted up and down in front, then 20-gauge sheet metal on top. The holder is mounted in the rear through a 2x6 laid flat. The two front mounts are mounted to the 2x6 vertical, otherwise the bolts run through the 6-inch portion, yes, it is solid. I use this mounting fixture to build ford 9-inch differentials and automatic transmissions. It is stout. It's an OTC brand #7020.

    Greetings my friend from the Rooster. I have two 78dt400's with extra top ends. Could you please clarify for me that the pistons for the Yamaha Reed Induction must have the two holes on the intake side of the piston or will the wiseco piston work as well ? I'm 70 can't remember. Luv Yer Show !!!

      Hey Richard, yes, the 78 models will have the reed valve holes in the piston on the intake side. A Wiseco piston will work fine, as long as it's made for your model and will certainly need the holes in the intake side of the piston.

    Hiya Dale, really enjoyed this video, a little bit of everything. I must ask, where do you buy that plastic sheathing from? I have about 6 bikes here that could all use a magneto freshen up.
    Really looking forward to seeing how you tackle building the pipe for the 250. I’m fairly young at 30yo but building pipes is a skill I insist on learning before I go. I know you’ll do a stellar job.

      I have been dragging my feet on that pipe, I built a couple when I was younger, and they were nothing to look at. I am hoping to do a better job with this one. I will get to it, at some point I hope, I am really chomping at the bit to ride that machine.

    I had DT2 MX - throttle stuck Full open and I found 2nd power band I did not know it even had - did not end well

    Thanks for the content Dale, I had a question 36:46 when you are installing the intake manifold, it has been my experience that NOS rubber, even if new, tends to be a little less pliable than actual new rubber. Is it OK to use a little sealer there (even if not specified by the manufacturer) to prevent a vacuum leak resulting in lean running if the rubber does not seal perfectly? I'm talking of course of using gasoline-resistant sealer, and just a very thin coat so as not to have overflow outside or worse inside into the reed valve area. The intake manifold on my Yamaha RX-100 is a little old, and I can only find NOS ones rather than recently manufactured ones.

      Sure Mariano, with these old bikes, you just have to do whatever is needed to fix them and make them operate again. There are no set rules, a lot of trial and error here at my place trying to get things repaired. There are some aftermarket places now making a lot of these rubber manifolds, my problem is they are never making them for my bike.

    That bike came from K&N Yamaha? I grew up about two miles from the bike shop out here in Ca. Was it Ken or Norm you bought the bike from? I went to school with Norm's son, and my best bud from school got chomped on by a great Dane they had one day...LOL

      Yes, it did, they sponsored all the best riders in the area. I believe they moved out to Tulsa in 71, so I bought this one from them in Feb of 74, for some reason I thought I got it in 72, it is a 72 engine, that's probably what was in my brain. Looks like Ken was the salesman on the ticket. It was very fast, and I had a lot of fun racing it.

    Why do you quench the gasket after heating? You are undoing the annealing

      This is the way I have done it for years, may not be right, but the gasket is very soft and flexible when done this way.

    was this bike converted to right side shift?

      These bikes came with the capability to switch to left or right I think till 74, when it became mandatory to have left shift in this country. The jap bikes not so much but a lot of the Spanish, Italian, and British didn't want to convert. It was pretty easy on these to switch them over you just had to drill a hole in the RH cover that was already located for you, then move a snap ring and slide the shaft out the RH side. It was a great thing for the flat trackers in the day.
