I didn't know this... but, the actor who was opposite Gary Oldman when he blasted the "EVERYONE" line... he was a firefighter, who was killed at the September 11 attacks when the South Tower collapsed. Keith A. Glascoe was his name.
This movie has two version: The Professional, and Leon The Professional. You watched Leon The Professional. The other one is the American release, which cuts out the montage of Matilda joining Leon on a bunch of assassinations, and also tones down some of her budding romance for him, as it rubbed test audiences the wrong way.
Neither Leon or Matilda had anyone really, the genuine love they had for each other wasn't romantic. Matilda was young, traumatized, and confused. Leon's not taking advantage of her was his love for her. Almost paternal. Such great performances from each.
@@miguelkennedy3840 Not by much. Mind I really love this movie, but the added scenes take away from the story. As many have said, she is a confused child, but the left turn tone shift does not work. It slows down the movie and just does not work well. Because in the American cut you get that same feeling when Matilda just out of nowhere says that they are lovers to the desk clerk. And even then it never made allot of sense she would do that (attention?). Because to me (knowing people somewhat like Matida's parents, and kids like Matilda), she would have held on to the only good thing in her life tight, and would not jeopardize that.
Its on record that this Besson's own relationship with his (ex)wife was the inspiration for this. To quote wiki - 'Maïwenn met film director Luc Besson when she was 12 and he was 29, and they began dating when she was 15. In January 1993, at age 16, she gave birth to their daughter Shanna. On the DVD extras for the 1994 film Léon: The Professional, Maïwenn said the film is based on her relationship with Besson'. Film seems problematic without this, but *with*, its bananas.
Gary Oldman’s performance is one of my favorites of all time by any actor! In my humble opinion He is one of the best character actors i have ever seen in my 50 years of existence
He's an astounding actor, in the vein of Robert Duvall, Jack Nicholson, Denzel Washington, Anthony Hopkins etc. A Hollywood A-Lister for sure. But he's not Daniel Day Lewis, or Marlon Brando or Meryl Streep. Just a very good actor, one of the best. Excellent in this movie.
Forrest Gump, Pulp Fiction, Shawshank Redemption, Four Wedding & A Funeral, Quiz Show were the movies nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars that year.
"This is making me uncomfortable" Yeah, it's supposed to. It is written and directed with those moments in mind, they are designed to make you feel uneasy about the situation you are watching. The overall story is made to show you how trauma can impact people in different ways: They are both damaged people trying to deal with their past issues in very wrong ways. The wild part is that the movie actually toned it down from the novel it's based on. EDIT: And for reference, Mathilda is supposed to be 12...
Jean Reno, Natalie Portman and Gary Oldman did a fantastic job in this movie and R.I.P Keith A. Glascoe (Benny) he was one of the firefighter's that died on september 11th 2001 at the world trade center also did a fantastic job in this movie
Mr. Besson is one of the most eclectic filmmakers ever. LEON (Interational Uncut version) and The Professional (U.S. Version) altogether, his first worldwide smash and an incredible piece of work. That 'anti-hero with a heart of gold and an sidekick" archetype. Often seen in Western or Samurai dramas. But in an crime drama like this, it still hits. Jean Reno as Leon is great. The debut of Natalie Portman as Matilhda is wonderful. Gary Oldman as Stansfield (one of so many villain roles) is unbelievable. The song at the end, Shape of My Heart by Sting is a great movie song. I definitely recommend La Femme Nikita (1990) or it's remake, Point of No Return (1993). Also from Besson, Lucy & 3 Days to Kill (2014) and ANNA (2019).
You got your braces off! Aww, look at your beautiful teeth!!! It's almost impossible to keep from running your tongue over them, isn't it? Such a cool feeling. You look so handsome, Leo!
I remember my father bringing this movie to my attention. I told him I wasn't interested, and he insisted I watch it. He was right. This is a really good movie.
My personal favourite scene / performance by Gary Oldman. Starts with "I like these calm little moments before the storm..." and ends with "He said, go back inside." UHHH...
My dad was named after John Wayne. RIP daddy! Vietnam veteran. Yes I'm 31 my dad adopted me in his early 50s when I was 3 months! God bless our soldiers
I did see a lot if people on reddit calling it pedophilic and bashing, Leon but its Reddit so I wouldn’t take it as an 100% accurate representation of the audience’s reaction
Leo! I'm glad to see you were able to finish with the braces. I know you've got to be happy to be rid of them. The teeth look amazing sir! Love ya man!
Call me weird but I kinda missed my braces after they got removed. However, when i finally got them off after 5 years (supposed to be 2) i loved the feeling of touching my front teeth with my tongue.
Before LEON The Professional, Luc Besson directed NIKITA (1990) which gives an idea of what Mathilda would have become if she had Gone Wrong. A forgotten Gem.💎
Yesssss when I saw this video pop up I cheered aloud and dropped everything to watch. I know you heard us in the comments about this one! Thank you for that!
Great reaction to a great movie. ..where did you get the extra scenes version?, seriously changes perspectives from the original release. ...Natale Portman ❤ great in every movie she's ever been in.

i just realised Leon from the resident evil franchise has a gun named Matilda and the character Matilda looks very similar to Ada Wong and beating resident evil 4 on normal mode unlocks the ability to play on professional difficulty
Clicked on this so fast! Such a great film. Gary Oldman is my favorite actor. He steals every scene in this movie. Can't believe this is Natalie Portman's first film. Knew you'd love it! ❤
Danny Aiello's character, Tony, will be watching over Matilda's future. He told her to go back to the private school and gave a bill because it's all the money she'd need while she was there for a semester or whatever.
I like to think that one day Matilda went to Tony and asked for her money. I don't think she'd have a problem taking Tony out if he didn't give her the money.
But that's not the path she took. The school accepted her and she planted roots, so the idea is that she will be okay (i.e., not a hitman or forever doomed by violence and the cycle).
The active ingridient of the capsules he was taking at some scenes is Amyl Nitrate, he was crushing them in his mouth to get immidate effect which is rush and euphoria.
They moved to another apartment in the middle of the story so the old lady was living far away. In the original cut, they cut out even more of the two's chemistry. People objected to the french writers view on a girl(who happens to be old enough to have a child) with the older Leon.Portman probably got her period, earlier, by 11, exposed to hollywood early.so she was already 13 with this chemistry with Leon. To Leon it was the love for he new daughter, adopted. For her, it was the other way around.
I’ve always loved this movie, it’s always been underrated in my opinion. I think it’s a remake of the same theme of a movie from the 70’s with Gena Rowland in Gloria. Another great movie.
Hey hey. I see here you have your braces off. All those years paid off. Looks amazing. I was watching your 2 fast 2 furious and saw them off . Right on!!!
Fun Fact: in Resident Evil 4, one of the guns that Leon can use in the game is called the Matilda, as a nod to Leon and Matilda from this movie.
Thank you

The greatest.
Legendary bad man, actors can always go the extra mile being the baddie, the goodie has to follow the rules.

P.S. Loved seeing him in Oppenheimer.
I'm not very disappointed in what you've said
Here in Europe (Italy) Jean Reno is very appreciated and famous. Love this movie
There are some over here that really know him as Victor The Cleaner.
Great French (by way of morocco) actor!

I could never find the original Leon the professional movie.
Matilda just had an infatuation. It’s up to adults to draw the line. Leon did a good job.
Neither Leon or Matilda had anyone really, the genuine love they had for each other wasn't romantic.
Matilda was young, traumatized, and confused.

Yep. Her and Dakota the two best imho.
She's really great in Beautiful Girls. Outstanding cast but she takes it. ❤

I knew she'd be a star from this role. I can count on one hand the number of child actors or actresses that don't suck.
Every time you ask "why would she do that?!" While Matilda has an old soul, she's also a teenage girl.
