I'd like to point out two things. Although Tohru did get cut, Akito did not attack her with the knife. She swung it because she desperately didn't want Tohru coming at her, that's defense. Also, one thing you didn't notice about the cliff Tohru fell from... It's the same one that buried her tent in the first episode, you can even see her tent is still sticking out. When you get to the final episode because "fruits basket another" is kind of hard to come by and it's too short to get an anime, I'll tell you what happens to Akito after this. (with plenty of spoiler space!)
*Shigure:* "Akito, did you push Tohru? Cause then maybe, just maybe, I might have to reconsider my whole thing here" *Akito:* "I didn't... But I did stab Kureno" *Shigure:* "Ah, that's fine! Anyways, hopefully he's dead 😌"
I think that being seen really meant a lot to Akito and helped her face her wrongdoing. It's an open question if anyone think Akito is forgivable or not - I think that's a personal judgement call. As someone who suffered trauma in the past, if the person ever really understood they were wrong, and wanted to change, that would be more than enough for me. Maybe I wouldn't have a relationship with them, but I would be satisfied and content.
I've always found forgiveness something very beautiful, certainly the most beautiful message in my opinion. And I'm very happy that this show managed to convey this message, not in a forced way, but in a natural way where we feel that Akito is really sorry and willing to change. It's a lot easier to hate someone who didn't do anything to you, it's even easier to hate a villain who did bad things to the point where many of us even find ourselves wishing the character dies, but having the ability to truly forgive him is something extremely difficult and challenging. This show managed to make me actually forgive Akito, and that's why she's one of my favorite characters. Forgiveness is not a weakness and as Momiji said, someone should not be labeled an "idiot or naive" for being able to forgive, because in my opinion, this is an admirable trait, the greatest virtue that someone can have and therefore the most difficult to have. I really admire Tohru, Kureno and this show that managed to make me have the pleasure of sincerely forgiving the villain who, after making serious mistakes, really regretted it and is starting to change. I want Akito to be happy, regardless of whether anyone thinks she doesn't deserve happiness, I want her to have it, because I believe with all my heart that she can be a better person.
I love this comment. Not many people talk about this even though forgiveness is the main message conveyed in Fruits Basket. It also shows with characters like Rin that even if you can't do it now, you will learn to forgive eventually and that will lead to true growth. It will be the start of healing from your trauma. As for now, Rin is still processing what happened like many of us but we're shown a hopeful future for even her who was probably the only one who couldn't forgive. It's just perfect with its portrayal and has a huge, huge message which would normally have taken decades of my life for me to understand if I didn't watch this.
This is one of my favorite episodes of the final season. The love is rising, and Akito finally goes over to the good side. Now Tohru and Akito are friends! 😭❤️🔥

AHHHHHHHHHH This story was very well written and this reboot followed the manga exceptionally well I'm so greatfull that they did this. I remember in highschool complaining that there was only one season because I read the manga and knew there was sooooo much more.

Akito wanted something to believe in. A real promise that wouldn't break. She needed the curse because being the zodiac god was the only thing she really valued about herself. It was what she was taught for years and years. One side filled her head with hopes and promises. Another side told her she was nothing. That side hated her just for being alive. There was no in between for Akito. Why do you think she tried so hard to keep people in line? She's no evil manipulator. She's just a sad child lashing out at the world for leaving her alone. You know, something people don't get is why Akito hates Tohru. It's because given the history of abuse and violence she had to live through at the hands of Ren, Akito doesn't believe that anyone, least of all women like her, could ever be that genuinely kind. Because in Akito's eyes, why would anyone ever be so nice and understanding without wanting something in return? But Tohru is that selfless. Even after everything that had happened, Tohru still cried for her. Offered to be her friend. Tohru was the one who gave Akito hope.
This is why I love Akito as a character. She never really interacted with Tohru and always had the upper hand. This mysterious figure of the family head when she first visit the estate. Someone more gentle and young that she was expected at school. The god who can control her friends destiny in the beach arc. And even then, Tohru already noticed that the curse binds Akito just like the other zodiacs. And now, all she can now see the crying child Kureno was talking about. She can finally get past all that because Akito herself is letting herself be vulnerable, express her true fears and the pression that was put on her even before she was born. Tohru then understand Akito is just like her, someone whos has been left behind by the people she loved, the people she depended on. Except Tohru is already past that point and hoping for a future with Kyo, when she's no longer haunted by her guilt towards her mother's death. That's why she can help Akito so well. She's the first person, despite Shigure, who see her for who she truly is. Funny how they're both dogs at heart. The only difference is that Shigure has a mind too toxic to help in the right way. That's why Tohru is his hope, to save Akito from all the pain and trauma she experienced at the end of her mother, of the family. Akito is a very human villain because not everyone turns good when they got hurt. Like Tohru said, we aren't born with kindness but with desires. And everyone craft their own based on what they learn. To me, Akito, Tohru and Yuki are the true core of this story. I'm only sad Yuki and Akito relationship wasn't explored more when it was such an important thing at the beggining.

It’s been three months- I just realized that you guys have just abandoned this series. I keep checking every week and then it’s become every couple of weeks; another one of my favorite react channels just finished furuba a couple weeks ago and I looked at the busyness of your other channel and I finally accepted that you just aren’t finishing this or at least with respect to your youtube subscribers. Great discussion about character “redemption”, altho i would argue akito never got redeemed.. maybe “recovered” is a better way to put it? Idk man.
