This is the BEST plate stall tutorial I’ve seen. This is the trick I’m working on right now and I haven’t been able to find something that actually helped. Can’t wait to hop on the mini tonight!
This video is so well explained and detailed. For us beginners it is super important that steps are explained in bits and pieces that we can digest. So awesome! Can’t wait to be doing this!
Ive been searching for a good tutorial on how to stall annd like everyone else had said this is HANDS DOWN the best stalling tutorial. Cant wait to binge the rest of your vids :)
you are the best. terrific skater, and such a great teacher. you really no the mechanics and how to break things down in the simplest way, creating steps that are good progress targets along the way.
Skating hips is all about the approach and exit. It's hard to explain in writing but think about the angle you approach the hip will also be the angle you exit. It's best to start with a big angle (more flat) and then work on getting it more vertical.
Thank you for putting together these videos! I really appreciate the format that you use for the videos. While I’m an aggressive inline newb, I’ve been using your videos because they have better instruction than anything I’ve found in the inline realm - especially your video on pumping!
great breakdown again. fakie stalls have been a hard one for me to straighten out my legs and stand up. I can almost do it but not there yet. will try this to see if it helps
Thank you for the video and tips! I used it to learn to successfully plate stall a few weeks ago. I'm trying to fakie stall now and I don't think I've yet found my legs just being fakie on the transition. I tend to feel disoriented at some point even in the fakie stance and then fall coming back down the transition. :/ For now I'm going to search for smaller ramps to practice and hope that helps build some confidence.
No matter what I do I can't get my bodyweight out of the transition :( except on tiny transitions. I've been trying to do proper stalls for over a year and I'm ready to give up
Not sure if you (or somebody else) can help me: is this stall doable without slide blocks ? I don't have any and I'm really scared of the copping (i always step over it to climb on the deck) Great tutorial :D
Thanks! Yes you can stall without slide blocks as your plate will lock onto the coping instead. But be careful not to damage your plate. You will also need to lift your toes or heels a lot more to help your wheels over the coping. You will need slide blocks to slide though.
Oh, same question as my last comment. Sorry for the repeat. I skate up the ramp with right foot leading and down the ramp with right foot leading. Do you suggest starting with my left foot going over the coping first, both forwards and fakie?
I generally stall with both feet at the same time going forward but my front foot (left) might touch a split second before the right. So if you lead with right, then I think you would land right and then left. For skating fakie you want to open you hips, and look behind you. So for you, it would be your right foot back with looking twisting right. Therefore, your right foot would land on the coping first.
Your tutorials are so helpful! You break it down so well! I am at the point of rolling one foot over the coping and bringing the other one up with it but not over the coping also. I have a fear that if I also get that foot over also I will get ‘stuck’ and slip face first at coping 😂. Is it just a matter of putting pressure into your heels at the same time to lift toes back over coping and roll back down? It might be that i need blocks too as my coping sticks out quite a bit. Thanks for taking the time to do these tutorials :)
Fat coping can be a little scary and blocks do help. Have you seen this video I did? It goes over the differences of blocks vs no block and body position. It might help you with a visual. th-cam.com/video/ygQngexKJ2c/w-d-xo.html Another option is that you could look to roll both feet on but then lift and step off your back foot?
@@ShortysSkateSeries thanks so much! I did watch that one and after watching decided to get blocks! But before i got my blocks I did actually start stalling - your video was super helpful! And i think your comment is right too - when i re-watched a vid of me doing it, i definitely unhooked one foot first. x
I’m having such a hard time getting step 2 in fakie stalls.. I best I’ve gotten is my back wheels on my 2nd taps the copping… I really don’t know how to get my 2nd foot just up there 🥲
If you want to slide then yes to do, but for stalling or tricks inside the transition you do not need them. I made a video that show the different of stalling with and without blocks. th-cam.com/video/ygQngexKJ2c/w-d-xo.html
Hi Shorty, I seem to jump on a front stall and all potential tricks 1/3 away from the coping - too early. That breaks all future tricks - too much power. I struggle with gettting both feet to meet and just rollover. How to practice that? It seems to have so much influence. Any recommendation?
So it sounds like you might be launching through your toes to jump out rather than pumping through your heels. You might want to take a step back and just look to pump the ramp, focus on pushing through your heels, and stay in contact the whole way up until your front wheels tap/ roll over the coping. You don't need a lot of power just enough to get to you to the coping and then once you have the feeling you can look to use more power to stall upright.
@@ShortysSkateSeries thank you so much - the advice about the heels is so spot on, thank you - really appreciate yr reply Shorty 😊. I will go back to basics and unlearn my muscles to jump now I know how :)
I have the hardest time getting my back leg up on the coping even just doing front side. No matter how hard I pump, I can't get both legs up there, and I can only stall once when I drop in on very short ramps. Is it speed, fear, body position?
@@ShortysSkateSeries do you think the size of the wheels limits a longer stall since your body axis isn't perpendicular to the ground when your wheels are larger?
@@moistbrick9769 Larger wheels will angle your body more into the ramp, so you need to think about pushing your knees over your toes (which will push your front wheels onto the deck), then stack your hips over the coping.
I use the Bont Blocks. They are the best, but I might be a little bias as I helped to design them 😂 bont.com/collections/roller-skate-plates/products/bont-slide-blocks?ref=shorty06
This is so silly but I really struggle with coming back into the ramp when I stall from a drop in. I think it’s a posture thing bc I try to put my back foot into the ramp first, which pitches me forward and causes me to go on my stops. Any tips for what to think of when coming back in fakie? For some reason I do a lot better if I jump back in rather than try to calmly step/roll.
Maybe try and keep your body inside the ramp with your feet just rolling to touch the coping and then roll off. And then slowly build back your pump/ height and becoming more upright. Feel free to DM some video on IG
The focus should be in pumping through the heels all the way up to the coping and then pushing your knees over your toes to transfer your weight into the deck. I'll look to do a short video soon as I have had a few people ask about it.

Good luck! You got it!
