Captivating Family Skiff Launch: Mother Goose

- Today we travel to Sesimbra to meet Francisco and Inês who have built an OZ Goose, as a family, over the period of 8 months.
Francisco knows little to nothing about sailing, still he committed to build his wife a brand new skiff!
Inês has been sailing for a few years, mainly modern racing dinghies like the Laser Cascais.
The Oz Goose with a big balanced lug sail was definitely something quite different!
But she handled it like a pro!

Fantastic!
Traveller is a bit tight and is restricting the tiller.
Plus the stupid tiller extension about twice as long as it needs to be.
Yes, you are right, my fault there, but we left the line 5 or 6 inches longer so we can slacken it a bit.
@RustyKnorr The extension was built as per the plans. And no it's not twice as long. Maybe she can cut it by 150mm.
The tiller extension needs to come in front of you across your torso so that you can handle the rudder and mainsheet properly. If you are hiking hard it needs to be long. Also correct tacking procedure demands that you push the tiller to leeward while you stay on the windward side of the boat until the boom comes in and the boat starts to turn. try doing that with an extension half that size.
In this video there was little wind so she is sitting too far inwards. Still, watch her tacking when she's soloing and notice where she grabs the extension when tacking.
I too will like the main sheet forward
Good job, good boat!!!
Hat's off to that guy for the build.........I loved the use of the tennis balls.......and how the trailer....is also the dolly for the boat..............very very nice !!! Can't wait to see the detailed video so I can be amazed at how he built other features.
I'll try to arrange with him as soon as my car is fixed! 😉
Lovely community you have there and in a beautiful part of the world, so much winning !
Thanks Bruno!
They've built a really beautiful Mother Goose - and that modified trailer is a work of art! Great to see this, thanks!
Wonderful to see the first joy of discovering a new boat that works well. Congratulations to all of you and thank you for sharing in such a well done video!
Thanks!
Amazing how different paint jobs make the two of them look different.
Yes Ben, color and patterns can trick your brain in so many ways...
If you guys keep showing off your boats and perhaps host a building workshop you might develope a local racing club.
You know that Francisco mentioned that already? 😁😁
Congratulations 🎉🎉
The trailer solution looks perfect.
Time to teach your husband to sail Inez 🙂
Hope you both get a great summer with mother goose.
Congratulations to the builders and Inez for going solo first day out. Thanks for the video Teo, really enjoying your Goose tales. Josh
Our pleasure! 😉
Very nice looking boat!
Awesome work.
That’s a very cool response.
Thanks buddy!
What a delightful video....
Thank you for posting....
Thank you!
She looks so happy!! Good Work on z boat!!
Very nice build, and I like the colours, but my critique is that you gotta pay attention to the shape of the sail. It looks like you have "girts," that is wrinkles in the sails. They can be dialed out by adjusting the lacing and flattening the halyards.
Thanks for the tips! This was her first time out, it can only get better! 😉
Looks good!
Hi! The Oz Goose is certainly incredible. Easy to build, fast, simple rig, inexpensive, etc. But are you going to sell the Goat Island Skiff?
Lovely work , terrific paint job too 👍👍👍
seems like the tiller extension is about 100 to 150cm too long.
Half it's length would be sufficient
@@shanelawrence8969 solo sailing, the helm would be further forward.
Hi Eric, you are spot on!
hi Shane, The extension was built as per the plans. And no it's not twice as long. Maybe she can cut it by 150mm.

Congratulations on a really nice boat and a great sail. Perhaps I am imagining it, but it seemed like the rudder and centreboard blades were swapped??? (Re watching the video I think I was just confused by the Insta360 camera perspective which makes the rudder blade look much bigger from leading to trailing edge than it actually is!!).
It's just the camera lens tricking you....the rudder and CB are the exact same width, they vary in length only 😉
esse também é um 12 pés? ele parece levemente maior q o seu.
@@thiago147style oi, é exatamente do mesmo tamanho, são os mesmos planos. 😉
tell me the dimensions of the case, please.
Hi, can you be a bit more specific? which case?
@@TheBoatRambler the length of the body and its width...thanks
@@игорьникитин-п5л the boat is 3.6m x 1.28m. You can find all the specs on the plans page linked below. 😉
@@TheBoatRambler thank you!
Tiller extension is obviously WAY too long, total pain in the ass. Who is ever going to sit far enough forward to need that much extension? It’s absurd.

As from my experience - tiller extension is good. its important to have enough lenght in case sudden strong gust with any hand and in many positions. On my preavious tiller extension i had trouble on heavy side wind to keep my position in boat. i was able to counterweight sides, but not not able to to move to middle of boat for better front/rear balance. Once you sailing alone with light boat its batter of runing or capsizing.
