Update. The much easier way to open the globe is to use a hair dryer and focus on the white plug where the threads are to screw it back in the stick. Use mini flathead screwdrivers, like from eyeglass repair kits, and work them between threads and the white plug.

Squiggly lines, pop of color - on white, there's so much possibility!!
