just retired to Thailand, arrived December 6th 2024. Starbucks is no cheaper here than NY, but since im paying $288 per month for a 3 br, 2 bath home vs $1600 for a 2 br condo in New York, Starbucks is guilt free! 😆

Ah, the classic “Starbucks in paradise” dilemma! At least you can sip guilt-free while lounging in your 3-bedroom oasis!

Airbnbs are expensive. You can save money doing Airbnb short term then find longer term rental once at your location via real estate office or locals.

This is true; however we have found when we tried to do a 3 month stay, the fees stacked on were very expensive.
Perhaps if we were able to find local owners and go directly it would help. Our friends have had some success with this.

As a single woman about to collect SS this year i have been retired for over 3 years in the US but it is soooo expensive. I am debt free and have a travel trailer on a lot full time as a home base in WA near my mom. I don't see getting rid of it as my son needs a place to live. I partially support him as well. He's had issues. I do travel - went to mexico this year and did a month long repositioning cruise this year. But the cost to live in the USA as a single woman is so high. I spent well over $50K this year. I probably spent over $4000 on health insurance and co pays and about that for vet bills. My health insurance premium went from $4 TO $170 a mo in 2025 . But the hard thing to me is being away from my two adult kids and my elderly mother who has no friends. The few she had have passed. How do you leave family? It's expensive to fly back and forth!! ALSO - the costs of Airbnb in all areas have significantly increased. I have been following for a few years. I travel with a cat so a lot of places are off limits to me. good luck with all your travels!

Thank you for sharing your experience-it really resonates with me. It sounds like you’re doing everything you can to manage the high costs of living in the U.S. while still supporting your family. I admire your resilience in maintaining a balance between your own needs and supporting your son and your mom.
I completely agree with you about how expensive things are in the U.S., especially with health insurance premiums skyrocketing. The costs of living seem to keep rising, and it's definitely challenging to stay ahead of everything. But it’s great to hear that you’ve found a solid base with your travel trailer in Washington, and I understand why you wouldn’t want to part with it-it’s wonderful that it also provides a place for your son.
We keep in touch with family through WhatsApp, Viber, FaceTime, and Skype, so even though we're far away, it helps us feel connected. Our son also loves to travel and comes to visit us overseas, so that makes the distance more manageable. I can imagine it’s tough to be far from your adult kids and your mom, especially with the rising cost of travel and the challenges of finding pet-friendly accommodations. It’s frustrating, to say the least!
You’re right that the price of Airbnb has shot up across the board, we often mention it has risen 40%+, and I can see how that would make things even harder when traveling with a cat. It’s a lot to juggle, but it sounds like you’re making it work as best as you can.
I wish you all the best as you continue to balance everything, and I hope you find some great adventures ahead despite the challenges.

You will need money to draw from or income if you move before you can touch 401k or IRA money at 59 1/2. I recommend you have a regular brokerage account if you’re an American, which is a stock account or a savings account large enough to bridge you to 59 1/2. See this video.

@Warren & Julie Travel - I wish you would do a whole video on something almost all travel blogs convineantly excuse themselves out of. HEALTHCARE ABROAD. Most american retirees care about that. Affordability is almost always associated with it. Hell we could retire in the U.S if the $uking healthcare in this country was not so rotten and unaffordable. So, with respect I request, please do a video on how you have dealt with healthcare aborad and how affordable or unaffordable it is. (Frustration with american healthcare obviously not directed at you ) :).
