    Weak spark helps explain our slower times at the drag strip. Plus with these new rollers this thing will launch even harder!

      I like good value just as much as the next guy and all, so after so long watching this channel I have way more faith in predator engines than I used to.
      Heard a couple stories of shredded piston heads when they were new and decided I wouldn't even look at them.

    too bad about the spark issue. I'm glad you found the trouble and it wasn't more serious. When the new coils arrive and you install them, please take note of the inner circle of bolts in the flywheel. They are elongated to allow for timing advance adjustment. Consult with Performance 670 to see what they say the spark advance should be. There is a chance that the timing is set wrong.

      About a year ago,I needed a 23hp Kawasaki engine replacement for a zero turn.
      I contemplated using a 670,and I priced em at just under 700$.
      I ended up finding a new 24hp Briggs for 740$ shipped.
      For an extra 50$ I've got a Briggs that I can get parts for and fix.

      Exactly.
      Actually for my employment, one segment is I work for a Briggs generator dealer.
      I got a better price off eBay than my job so I like saving $ too.
      Haha so I’m not too biased but sometimes a few bucks more gets a better product.
      I always liked the Kohler engines better than Briggs actually, but I guess some of the newer ones (courage) are really bad.

    Thanks for another great video guys. I like the dragster most of all out of all your fantastic builds. I've been a mechanic here in Australia for nigh on forty years and have always done well with trouble shooting, usually I see Ike's logic process unfolding and its all but identical to my own. Great work, the both of you, not only mechanically, your video editing and camera work are excellent too.

    With all the work you did with the engine to increase the power and the RPM the clutch springs are very needed necessity as well as having an offset keyway to advance your timing, timing is very critical for making power on such a small engine. The new key ways usually are sold in two degree increments. And a big loud wind to you fellas today 😎 PS the magnet should be epoxied in place check clearances

    Just a heads up a 2003-2005 yamaha R6 engine was fuel injected and made 110whp and the whole bike weighed in at 350lbs. If you were going the motorcycle engine route and didnt want to get something like a liter bike or busa engine that would be a solid contender.

    i think the magnets point the same way...its important to pass a magnetic field over a coil and the two magnets work together...if one is loose in there and bouncing around or getting pushed away from the coil that would have an ill effect on the spark

    • @CarsandCameras
      @CarsandCameras  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't understand the science behind it, but performance 670 told us specifically that while the flywheel is rotating clockwise the first magnet to pass a coil (if that makes sense) needs the north side facing the coil, and the second needs the south side facing the coil

    • @hwesson75
      @hwesson75 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      As i (vaguely) understand it, north comes up to the leading edge of the coil, causing the magnetic field in the coil to shift one way, then as things go on around north hits the other side,with south hitting the leading, which rips the field the other way causing it to generate enough power to make the spark.
      Of course, I could be completely off, but it sounds good in my head at least.

    • @AuMechanic
      @AuMechanic 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      That's pretty close.
      It has to provide like an AC wave, one magnet (nth) for positive pulse and the other (sth) gives a negative pulse.
      The module senses the negative swing and releases the primary (like a set of points opening) and you get a spark voltage from the coil.
      Because of the way it works the voltage peak and slope of the pulse also determines the timing advance so any change to coil resistance, air gap or magnets will effect not just spark voltage but timing advance too.
      So its critical to set the right specified air gap particularly if it has 2 separate coils that the air gap be the same for both.
      You can experiment with different air gaps to the rotor and use a timing light you may see the difference in ignition timing curve which gives you some means to fine tune the ignition timing on it for best power, as would different impedance coils.
      I've got a vid on how it works using a scope to show the voltage pulses and spark trigger point.

    Had a one man watch party at my house. Very cool goKart . I can see how that lose magnet would cause a weak spark. The closer the magnet is to the coil, the more voltage is induced into the coil...makes sense to me.

  • @aldenschwarze6289
    @aldenschwarze6289 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    The rollers will add stall, but its still going to clime the front pulley to quick, I think..basically like shifting to a higher gear to soon.. What I used to do back it the day on snowmobile clutches, was to add more tension to the spring on the rear pulley.. it was always amazing how much it improved acceleration. Its basically like waiting a little longer to shift to a higher gear. on the rear pulley, the slider sits in the valley.. carefully dissemble the rear pulley, while holding both inner and outer pulley, and keeping the tension on the spring. rotate the outer section of the pulley counter clock wise, so the the slide moves to the next valley to the left, putting more tension on the spring.. i would think that the manufacturer would have a stronger spring for that purpose also, but maybe not.. but adding more tension like I described does work also.

    Ditch those plugs and have gopowersports send you autolite AR3910X plugs. Also, again, loosen your coils, place a business card between the coils and flywheels and torque the coil bolts, it’s a good reference point. You are correct, the flywheel does tend to move as rpms climb, enough to touch and kill a coil if they touch, crankshaft flex.

      To each their own, but I personally love the sound of a 4 cylinder bike engine, but you can't put a shit exhaust on there. If I had to make a serious recommendation for them, I would start looking for the engine out of a mid to late 90's Honda VFR750/Magna. A 750cc V4 that makes 80 HP at around 9,000 RPM sounds like nothing else out there. Check out Do It With Dan's videos on his Magna. IDK if I can paste links in here, but copy and paste this: /watch?v=VrV2CAJTRA0 after youtube . com into your search bar to hear the bike.

    What's the compression ratio ? Make sure that's up there !!!! And what do your heads look like the shape does a lot for how the fuel mixes before it fires ! Try dimpling the piston with a drill bit in a small cluster and if you weld up the heads cut a pressure release channel like with a grinder this makes a improved quench effect ...all this will help the way the piston can help mix and maximize your fuel burn ! Also try brisk spark plugs ...I never made more power than with them ...there a triple spark ... call to get your conversion plug number might use a dr15zc but not sure depends on compression ....also make sure your plug boots are tight on the spark plug insulator if there not ,electricity will take the path of least resistance.. get som msd boots and then either run silicone tubing around the wire or dubble up some heat shrink tubing ...4 stroke have such weak spark compared to 2 stroke ....also is your case vented ? If not vent it a lot of pressure builds up in the case from the air against the side of the crank weights . Some people go as far as knife edging the crank for the less resistance reason alone ...these are cheap easy mods to try ...proven results

    Aww yea,.. Paint job, maaan when you got a close-up 🤯 it pops!!
    Looks old-school, i like it. That dragster gotta hit 100mph before summer's end. With the 670, fellas can you do it??? I got faith in ya and a lil tweak here and there.
    I still say build a transmission from an old motor bottom-end, do away with chain setup and g with cvt axles similar to used in sand buggies with high torque&hp output.
    U guys are killin' it broh' s and the truck, it's coming along Jon. I noticed a few lil indentions when you were showing it. Could u used a shaping hammer from the inside and maybe tap those out?? Or were those rivets that'll only be able to bondo or fiberglass over?? I thought you welded it but i sometimes miss episodes so idk.. But..... It's taking shape. I remember a c10 i build with my step pappy wheni was 14yr old. Oh the joy and since of accomplishment everytime i looked at it or started it up, or drove it. Well until he got drunk and sold it to a dealership owner. He got himself a brand new z71 4x4 even trade, well a $44k truck at the time. I never got to drive it Even though i built the c10 fr frame up. It was nice. However i did learn basics in mechanic, body work. They can't ever take that away. Anyways watching y'all build is very inspirational. Thx for making us viewers feel like a part of something phenomenal ..😎👍👍

    For me would be interesting to put a commercial Kawasaki or Kohler TWIN engine in of the same displacement and see what they would run...I have a landscape business and it was all about the Japanese engines for trimmers and 21"mowers as I was buying equipment starting in the 1990's. Briggs was a huge part of my teen teen years with mini bikes and home owner lawn mowers and having to spend $10 grand on a commercial mower that only came with a Briggs was really a tough sell, so far they are what you would expect fairly tough and burn a lot of oil. I know that these motors are actually meant to be Governed and run at a max RPM and you guys trying to get them to run full skirt up is not really what they like so it might be a good idea to drop some Royal purple in and find a giant oil cooler and fan to keep them happy?

    For your body line up the cab, use masking tape on one side and sand then switch to the other side to get a clean crisp body line.

    It’s actually really cool seeing you guys polish that turd of a v-twin. I want to see you guys push the engine to its max. Like an underdog story.
    Ps- I don’t think you’ll break anything. I think the tires will spin before you start popping wheelies, or the engine will die a glorious death. Need some slicks.

    The weak spark could be the result of one cylinder being dumped to pass EPA testing or to comply with some dumb gas millage regulation on small engines so you need to by-pass the rig. Could be a solid copper core plug wire is needed (thicker is better) or a by pass system on the mag. For racing you could also try shaving the heads down 0.30 or more to get some more compression and also polish the intake system to very smooth and shinny to help with gas and air flow. Get a turbo that will do the trick.

    you guys should do a 3 wheeled dragster and use a harley rim with a car tire on it for the drive. that bad boy has a lot of rotational weight and friction with the 2 wheel set up.

    Bondo was created for body shops so they could get jobs done fast and out the door. All custom experts use lead. Takes longer but last a life time. Will not crack or absorb moisture and cause rusting. If your going to keep this truck for awhile that makes sense. If your going to turn it over in no time your doing great. But then again that is just my opinion. And leading has a learning curve.

    "We got AC spark plugs. They didn't have Champions."
    Well, a history lesson here. The "AC" in AC Delco, stands
    for Albert Champion. Al didn't start 1 plug company,
    he founded 2.

    John, 220 is too fine for shaping body filler. Use 36, then 80 grit to get your basic shape. Leave the last coat of filler just high enough to remove all the 80 grit marks with 180. I rarely go any finer than 180 before priming. Also, id stay away from the rattle can stuff. Invest in some type of gun and a 2k high build primer from your paint store, feather fill or an equivalent product may be an even better option at your current stage in the process. Etching or epoxy primers are needed for bare metal prior to high build products to ensure long term adhesion. A PPG rep once pointed out to me that quality etching primers use an acid component that comes in a separate plastic jug and must be added before use. If it comes as one product in a metal can it cant have much if any ability to etch metal, otherwise it would soon destroy its container. That being said, I, and from what I can gather most other professionals tend to lean toward epoxies more than etch primers. Also, when you need to build a line or such as the one up the center of your post you might find it helpful to use masking tape up one side of the line as you sand the opposite side. Particularly as you work into finer grits the tape will raise the sand paper off the surface just enough to help that line form nice and strait. I hope this helps a little.

    The best way to fix something, is to understand how it works in the first place. Also, there are air gap specifications (feeler gauge measured) to avoid uneven ignition pickups for any engine. Guessing means wasted time and money.

    We are going to find out what the weak link is in the drivetrain is when you get your coils. I suggest changing out that toggle ignition switch with a real ignition switch. Those toggles are built sorry and could be not fully turning on causing low spark also. I have seen plenty of faulty switches causing no spark/weak spark problems.

    A few episodes ago you guys were talking about an EFI setup... I am pretty sure MegaSquirt has the ability to do a V-Twin configuration, and would allow you to get rid of those magnets / weak spark.

    All those engines that use that style of coil and a magnet on the flywheel use the same gap. I always used a match book. Lessen upthe bolts, put the matchbook down, set the coil down then tighten it up.

    I’ve been doing auto body since 1986
    The sanding block is your friend get a med and small 3m and a long board after you Cheese grade you’ll block it with 36 or 40 grit leaving enough filler to come through with your 80 after that if it feels straight prime then while it’s drying give the primed spot a light guide coat fuzz of flat black after that dries block again with 220 then repeat prime fuzz then 400 then prime with a good epoxy primer and guide coat it again , block it again then seal it and you can paint it black if you wanted to
    Let the critics begin
