This still gives me goosebumps. I've been addicted to Caps hockey since my first game when I was 7 years old in 1989 against the Jets. One of the happiest moments of my life!
I was 9 in 1989. At 15 I was going through the channels on my TV and saw a Sharks/Kings game on ESPN. I asked my parents if I could see a hockey game, and they took me to the Caps. In 1997 we got season tickets (back when you could afford them). Have been watching ever since, and with 2 parents who have failing health recently, I was in tears knowing they got to see them win, after all these years.
What a quitter. But you gotta feel for Nate Schmidt. Imagine being that guy. You've played with the Caps for years, and never won the Stanley Cup. You get drafted to the Golden Knights, and go all the way to the Stanley Cup final. And you lose. TO THE CAPS.
Me and my friend are Jersey born Devils fans we watched game 5 on tv in our Devils jerseys with chicken wings cheering for the Caps because we wanted to see Ovechkin earn one we are so happy for him look at that smile

Gosh this was an amazing night for Caps fans! We were on the edge of our seats in my home, watching the clock and praying to the Hockey Gods for us to keep playing until the last second. Seeing Ovi and the Caps hoist the Cup was one of the greatest things I’ve seen. So thankful I have this memory with my children and family. 😂
I'm a Blues fan and when I watched the Caps win the cup, I cried too. It's the only tears I've ever shed for a champ winning team that wasn't from my hometown. We still love Oshie and so many people here in STL were rooting for the Caps because of Oshie and the fact that Washington is always ridiculed like The Blues and both fanbases have been tortured for decades. When watching The Caps win I remember looking to the sky and saying out loud "For fuck sake! The Caps did it. When will The Blues do it?" Well I didn't have to wait long for that answer. Cheers to our teams finally shedding their legacy of failure. Back to back years to boot. Go Caps Go and Let's Go Blues!
Even tho I am a Sharks fan, I was so happy to see the Caps win the Cup! As well I went to DC for a school trip for a week! Every student in my class was shocked! Congrats Caps! To my Favorite East Team!
SJSharkMaster Sharks are just CapsWest man. And y’all always kicked our ass the few times we did play. What’s funny, is I think this was the first year we actually beat y’all once.

Still getting chills watching this. It was like I was back in my living room with family and friends jumping up and down and celebrating all over again.
God dammit, this is making me choked up and teary-eyed. Seeing Ovi’s emotion throughout these playoffs epitomized all of us caps fans. Who knows where I would’ve been had my family not have gone to that caps-flyers game back in 2008 as a youngin’, met Ovi, Mike Green and Jose Theodore? Probably a ducks fan? Sheesh. I’ll pass. I’m rocking the red when I get buried and having “WE’RE NOT GOING TO BE FUCKING SUCK THIS YEAR” on my tombstone! ALL CAPS, ALL OURS!!!!
From an LA Kings/Toronto Maple Leafs fan...BIG CONGRATULATIONS! Caps finally deserve their Cup! And thank you from the bottom of my heard for beating those Vegas bastards who got all the calls and all the breaks until the very end and saving the NHL for the rest of us real fans!!!!
I remember being there that night, and thought I was going to have a heart attack afterwards. Truly a life moment for me. And now one year later I'm watching it again and reliving greatness!
As a Russian fan of the Capitals (because of Ovi) from Vancouver, I can only imagine how much fun it must have been to experience this epic final. I hope you guys win another SC this year! Good luck!!!
Interesting. The game should've been over when the Vegas clock hit 2.3 seconds at 4:09 of the video. (This assumes the Capital One Arena clock was counting down accurately, and that it was initially synced with the Vegas clock when play resumed with 1m 49s left in the game.) That would've been perfect timing, as that's clearly before the Vegas player could reach the puck while everyone was celebrating. After it reset, the Vegas clock was running 2.3 seconds slower than the Capital One Arena (COA) clock. At 1:19, the COA clock shows 30 as the Vegas clock shows 32.3. At 1:09, the COA clock shows 40 as the Vegas clock shows 42.3. The COA clock did run off too much time when the icing was called at 1:22 of the video. Thus, that's why it ended up 3 seconds ahead (an extra 0.7 ahead) of the Vegas clock at that stoppage. I was so pissed when Backstrom couldn't seal the Cup at 0:53 of the video. (I understand Backstrom had 2 fractures in his right index finger, and thank god the miss didn't matter.) Anyway, at the beginning of that sequence, you'll notice Backstrom takes control of the puck and is just behind the "Stanley Cup Final" logo when the COA clock hits 59.9 seconds. But the Vegas clock didn't reset and hit 59.9 until Backstrom was within 10 feet of the center line. (Unfortunately, the Vegas clock isn't visible for that play in this video, but the Vegas clock can be seen for that play on other videos, such as "Clock confusion delays Stanley Cup presentation for Capitals" by SPORTSNET.) I timed the difference between when Backstrom was near the logo vs near the center line, and sure enough it's about a 2.3 second difference.
After watching night in and night out for almost 10 years with my mom, literally growing up with Ovi, Backy, Greeney, Holtbeast, etc, the best moment of all this, quite honestly, was watching those final tenths run down and just simply turning and embracing my mom... life has brought us different places and we don’t see each other or bond as much as we used to anymore (that’s what happens when you grow up, right?), but the Caps have always brought us together, and this was the dream we longed for together for so long, and god, was the reality even better than the dream...
thank u for posting this because it's like the only way I can rewatch Backstrom missing that empty netter! lol that was so stressful but great finish. I was outside the DC arena at watch party
For us at home, when the clock froze, I was screaming without knowing how much time is left. I'm glad COA had their own timer running so you knew...lol
