Friday Night Funkin', often abbreviated to FNF, is an open-source[2] donationware rhythm game first released in 2020 for a game jam.[3] The game was developed by a team of four Newgrounds users, Cameron "Ninjamuffin99" Taylor, David "PhantomArcade" Brown, Isaac "kawaisprite" Garcia, and evilsk8r. The game shares some gameplay features with Dance Dance Revolution and PaRappa the Rapper, though borrows aesthetic influences from Flash games.[4] The game has been credited with driving users back to Newgrounds, a site whose popularity peaked in the early 2000s.
The game includes a roster generally comprising characters from external media on the Newgrounds site.
The game revolves around the player character, "Boyfriend", who must defeat a variety of characters in singing and rapping contests in order to date his love interest, "Girlfriend". Gameplay revolves around mimicking the opponent's notes with timed inputs while avoiding running out of health for the duration of the song.[5][6]
The game was initially created for the Ludum Dare 47 game jam in October 2020.[7] A full version backed on Kickstarter titled Friday Night Funkin': The Full Ass Game is planned for release in early 2022.[8]
Friday Night Funkin' is a rhythm game in which the player must pass multiple levels, referred to as "weeks", each containing three songs. Each week, the player faces a different opponent, though some deviate in structure from this via the inclusion of multiple opponents. During gameplay, the opponent will sing a pattern of notes (represented as arrows) which the player must then mirror by using the arrow keys or the W, A, S, and D keys. Some songs introduce more complicated patterns, with the player's pattern sometimes varying from the opponent's or both singers engaging in a duet. For each week, the player has the option to select one of three difficulties: Easy, Normal, or Hard. As the difficulty increases, the speed of incoming arrows increases, and the patterns of arrows become more complex. The player's high score for each week on each difficulty is tracked and shown in the top corner of the week selection screen.[1][5]
The game contains two different modes of play: a story campaign in which songs are played linearly and a "free play" mode which allows for free selection of any of the game's music tracks.[5]
Ninjamuffin99 assembled a small team of Newgrounds creators to develop an initial Friday Night Funkin' prototype as a submission to Ludum Dare 47 in October 2020, which contained only a handful of music tracks and lacked menus. Despite its rudimentary design, the prototype received unexpected success, leading to many requests for a full game. In response, Ninjamuffin99 claimed to have plans to expand the game.[7]Ninjamuffin99 would later update this demo on November 1, 2020, which added several additional menus and options as well as "Week 2", an additional fight. Interest in the game grew, with it quickly growing in notoriety on Newgrounds as it had received significant attention via platforms such as TH-cam, Twitter, TikTok, and Twitch. Its soundtrack by composer Kawai Sprite has been made available for free on Bandcamp and Spotify.[9]
In February 2021, Ninjamuffin99 requested Nintendo to allow his game to be ported on the Nintendo Switch. However, his request was rejected, which he believed was because the game was incomplete.[10]
Week 7 was released as a timed exclusive on Newgrounds.[11] Due to the increase in traffic this caused to Newgrounds, the site crashed and was unavailable for several days. The game ended its weekly update following Week 7, with the developers instead focusing on working on the full game, titled Friday Night Funkin': The Full Ass Game.[12]
Modding
The game has an active modding community due to its open-source release, allowing for the implementation of fan-made content.[4][13][14] As a result, the full game will receive polymod support.[15][16][17]

I think v2 was a great way to allow a popular mod to become the goat especially since waiting almost 2 years was nuts and to think it was that much but yeah so much got added it makes v1 feel like a rough draft of the mod then a release

What I liked most about the new version is how the developers changed the song Alone
The old version of this song, to be honest, seems like it was made in an hour and in general it’s not pleasant to listen to it at all: what can’t be said about the new version, it’s just gorgeous and directly conveys the essence of crepe paste
It’s a pleasure to listen to it, I especially want to praise the moments when Luigi sits at the beginning and at the end of the song, this quiet voice that seems to be whispering something is simply magnificent

It's cool that in Powerdown, they have the False Hero section, which tbh I do wish it could've been Adrev's version, but at least this update of Powerdown is even better
Past the transformation, golden land lines up almost note for note, it’s really satisfying and really let’s you compare the two
I didn’t realize this until seeing this comparison and nobody has seemed to have mentioned it yet but I like how in V2 they actually did the correct colors this time for MX (if you didn’t notice, V1 accidentally had the red and black colors inverted but was stated that they weren’t gonna do some update or something to fix it cause it looks cool, but it looks like now here in V2 they decided and made sure to get the colors right this time lol)

The thing about this mod that I love is that, no matter what bf did, he would’ve lost. Even if he did do the three songs and was let go like Mario promised, Mario would still take GF because he assured them that she would pay either way, if bf tried to save gf…well… we see how that went.
I'm so glad this mod came out when it did, they spent all their time working on this masterpiece and they cooked real good

Dude, there was a lot of repetition in V1 of this song and listening to the same things over and over again got boring after a while. It's on V2 too, but there are parts of the song we might like. The sound sounds a little more creepy in V1. It suits Horror Mario better, but the music in V2 is definitely better.
Golden land V1 = Golden land V2
I was actually hesitant when comparing this. Because look, in V2, the sprites were changed, Mario's laughter in the middle of the song was improved, but the sound is not heard much. The producers changed the sound to give it a Game Boy style. This doesn't sound very nice either. But you can hear the sound very easily in V1. In other words, sound gains in V1, sprites and changes gains in V2. So V2

Well everything in V2 is better than V1. And bf's voice at " " was perfect. Really a banger. It is impossible not to sing along while listening. Good job
Powerdown V1 < Powerdown V2
Both of these versions have their good things. The only thing that makes V1 better than V2 in my opinion is the wahooo part. Wahooo V2 also has it, but it is very quiet. But on the other hand, if we look at V2, MX has become gigantic. While in the first version it was a few centimeters larger than the bf, now the bf is the size of the MX's foot. And there are Vocal improvements. I loved it while listening. Developed in Background. I mean, the song was good before, but they took it to the top in V2.
Apparition V1 < Apparition V2
I've never listened to this song in full, it never caught my attention. But it sounded good while playing the V2. The producers changed the sprites and vocals. It hasn't changed much, but it's still beautiful.

Gonna be honest, Race Traitors was my least favorite song of V1. Because mainly the vocals, it isn't even from a voice clip of when Mario is mad. It's when his ass is on fire in Sunshine, so it doesn't even sound like he's mad. It's just screaming, and it didn't sound at all what Mario sounded like in the original video. In V2, it actually sounds like they used voice clips from the original video. And it fits much better with the instrumental. The only thing V1 has over V2, is the instrumental.

I think the reason some streamers or at least the ones i saw thought golden land was easier was cause in v1 goldenland still had the poison mushroom spam where in v2 it was removed
V2 have been seriously improved a lot of the old classic songs from V1 and new ones from Twitter and other parody other characters I do say that V2 is a little bit better than V1 I'm not saying that if you want is bad but I'm saying that the songs that are from the classic like golden land appreciation power down it's me alone and a lot more have improve and expanded a lot more to show more I will say I like alone V2 a little bit better than V1 I do say when V1 came out I listen all the classic songs and they were good but when I first heard that V2 came out and hearing the songs have expanded I like it a lot I don't really understand why a few people hate appreciation V2 and they like the one better yeah sure is hard to digest but I say V2 appreciation is a little bit better than V1 because it shows like a TV static where it was originally from because it's a creepypasta from a video game cartridge it got that one down have improved of the warrior head a little bit more smoother instead of looking veryvery clunky but when you hear it you want fun warrior will show you fun it's kind of a nice touch I was feeling that appreciation was lacking of something but I can't really put my finger in it it just need a brand new look and looking a little bit more scarier
