La barca è bellissima e ho avuto il piacere di vederla in acqua tante volte qui a Cagliari .. ma vederla li, con inquadrata al traverso una barca competitor..è un altra cosa.. Совершенно другая технология и материалы из 21 века. Это как сравнить Зил-130 и Мерседес последней модели...там и там 4 колеса+наличие кабины. Я сам инженер из СССР. Могу сравнивать.

Следовательно, управлять надо умело и осторожно. Думаю, такая сверх критичная конструкция, не простит ошибок при управлении. ИМХО конечно :-)))
@@DoctorBetterverywell хороший ответ...но я более чем уверен, что у этой птички есть электронные мозги, которые учитывают поперечные и продольные колебания корпуса вкупе со скоростью , угол скольжения, сила давления, так и градус направления воздушного потока. Почему я так думаю - движение по палубе члены команды, сам корпус и парусная оснастка выглядят во всех проекциях как литые, очень маленькие углы разворота почти без крена всей конструкции в целом - режет воду и окружающее пространство как масло....ну или экипаж великолепно подготовлен, а скорее и то и другое в совокупности. Ну и в плане отсутствия киля - а зачем козе боян, если функции киля , тобишь поперечной устойчивости отлично заменили наличием подводных крыльев с изменяемым углом наклона и плавающей точкой опоры с водной поверхностью. Катамараны и тримараны не имеют в своей конструкции киль. Я не моряк и конструктор корабельный...но могу анализировать и сопоставить.

The reaction would have been to sink the ship so the idea does not catch in the piracy circles. That foil is suited maybe for a very light raider, if that. The materials would not have been available nor the supporting tech to obtain them, nor maybe us if we chose to bring that tech to the past (no way to know the implications)
I learned to sail in the Panama Canal Zone after rebuilding a 26' derelict sloop. It was exciting to sail at 5 to 6 knots and sometimes a little more. It must be exhilarating to experience the thrill of these ultra fast boats at well over 50 mph.
3 months ago i was piloting a CAT15 at St Tropez ( i did that a lot more when i was a kid ) , the feeling is already incredible when only one side of the boat is in contact with the water so i can only imagine how great it must be to fly above water with a boat of that size . Anyway that tech is very old ( hydrofoil ) but this is awesome to see it on a regular wind boat instead of engine boat .

Amazing design! It's a yacht that is half hydrofoil and half ekranoplane... It is using the hydrofoil arms to lift it out of the water and It is using the ground-effect of the water to sail in the air just above the surface. Genius with an outright elegant design, it is an engineering marvel and a work of art!
Luna Rossa team put a lot of effort in R&D, they pioneerized this boats basically, with all the others taking some Luna concepts as the V shape hull and his foil design. Surely a great boat.
The aircraft comment is accurate. These are air/water foil craft. They are fast, fragile, uncomfortable and very expensive. They have little to do with seamanship beyond flat water bays. At this date in technology we have known of foils for more than a half century. These "Cup" or "Class" competitions would do well to capture both methods of propelling water hulls. We cannot, should not forsake the real skills of sailing as what is required to manage a displacement hull through crushing water and wind. Foil racing is not sailing. Let's just call it "Foiling" and place it into a separate class.
This is absolutely amazing, honestly I wouldn't dream such a thing could actually be done. Perfect 90° turns, at that speed, in a boat that size, is just nearly beyond the laws of physics. Even those insane racing power boats can't move like that. The fact it's a racing sail boat almost makes this voodoo..lol I will say this, I fear for the crew aboard if God forbid a defective part or any other random act takes place during one of those turns. SERIOUSLY dangerous amounts of forces on those control surfaces. Still, ABSOLUTELY amazing...what a beautiful piece of engineering..!

Saw one similar to this nose dive at full pelt during Cowes Regatta Week 2019. Pretty spectacular to watch these from the beach slicing through the water. These types of sail make for quite a surprising audio experience as well.

I don't know, lifting a foil makes sense. The force being provided by the wind is one sided. Think of the forces on the keel of a conventional boat, the keel opposes the forces on the mast which would tip the boat.

To be clear, could one tell me how this thing is flown ? Is there one crew in charge of conventional sailing and one in charge of the flying, a skipper and a pilot ? Are there computer controlled feedback loops and actuators in charge of stability or is it inherently stable ? That would seem an enormous achievement, I’d be amazed if there was no electronics inside. You’d need them for development, sure. But but, I’m shocked. Well done. Having read the first account from Alain Thebaud, the pioneer, I’m in awe before the progress made since.

Soviet designer Rostislav Alekseev came up with and implemented this idea about seventy years ago! He was a brilliant man! It is a pity that these ideas were lost with the death of the Soviet Union. Enthusiasts well done, develop these projects for all mankind as the USSR did!
Theoretically that is possible, however I think the upward force (lift) it gains has to come from the water, not from the sails, unlike kite-sailing. Although I would also love to see some insane stuff on that :D
@@GottvonRom I think not; this boat is getting its lift from the water (with hydrofoils), and does not use airfoils to create lift (the hull might create some slight lift, but far from the majority).
This is so cool! I love that it plays beautiful music for everyone to listen to across the sea. Almost etheric. It flies, only anchoring itself in the water with least possible volume. The next step is to let go of the water... and fly. This can be done using two sails, one above and one below, force equilibrium.
@@stevecarter8810 Or one medium with two opposing or artificial differentials. Just as an airship with sails would need to combat drift. But the main thing here was to keep it from rotating, keeping stability, not keeping it from drifting in the wind.
Are they allowed to use computers to control anything? Can they use computers to make suggestions? Being able to keep the boat more vertical will allow the greatest extraction of power from the wind.

Why? It has no practical use. One could not build a cargo or passenger ship with this technology.

To be clear, could one tell me how this thing is flown ? Is there one crew in charge of conventional sailing and one in charge of the flying, a skipper and a pilot ? Are there computer controlled feedback loops and actuators in charge of stability or is it inherently stable ? That would seem an enormous achievement, I’d be amazed if there was no electronics inside. You’d need them for development, sure. But but, I’m shocked. Well done. Having read the first account from Alain Thebaud, the pioneer, I’m in awe before the progress made since.

Soviet designer Rostislav Alekseev came up with and implemented this idea about seventy years ago! He was a brilliant man! It is a pity that these ideas were lost with the death of the Soviet Union. Enthusiasts well done, develop these projects for all mankind as the USSR did!

Theoretically that is possible, however I think the upward force (lift) it gains has to come from the water, not from the sails, unlike kite-sailing. Although I would also love to see some insane stuff on that :D

@@GottvonRom I think not; this boat is getting its lift from the water (with hydrofoils), and does not use airfoils to create lift (the hull might create some slight lift, but far from the majority).

This is so cool! I love that it plays beautiful music for everyone to listen to across the sea. Almost etheric. It flies, only anchoring itself in the water with least possible volume. The next step is to let go of the water... and fly. This can be done using two sails, one above and one below, force equilibrium.
Hmm I think it needs to be in two mediums to create the differential needed to drive and steer.
@@stevecarter8810 Or one medium with two opposing or artificial differentials. Just as an airship with sails would need to combat drift. But the main thing here was to keep it from rotating, keeping stability, not keeping it from drifting in the wind.

Are they allowed to use computers to control anything? Can they use computers to make suggestions? Being able to keep the boat more vertical will allow the greatest extraction of power from the wind.
