Unpopular opinion: it's not as great as people think it is.
This is a great question.... I think now that they're making a second, I want to say its great, but that's because we know the second one won't be as powerful. This was my first R rated movie ha ha
My first R Rated movie was Braveheart… I walked in at ten years old, I saw a movie on the screen, and then…. A head is pulled out of a basket… Needless to say, my mother sent me out of the room immediately
I didn't like the movie even after watching it 3 times, so I came to see what your thoughts are since you didn't like it. In 5 minutes you talked about everything but the reason you didn't like it.

The movie is not very good period.
Neither is Kingdom of Heaven which is kind of a remake, just in a different time period. Both fall short of what they aimed to be.
Kingdom of Heaven could have been so good
A dumb movie e , Commodus is the worst/dumb villian ever written and Maximus is no better . i wasn't entertained at all cause what makes a great movie is having interesting characters but this movie fails in every aspect at it , it has potential but ruined because of its terrible script .
here are the idiotic things about these two characters :
.Commodus is shown a cartoonish character where every action or thing he does is faced with disrespect and resentment , like no one in the movie really respects him but he is always faced with opposition (the crowd cheering , his general and guards lying to him , his father not really trusting his abilities, his council rejecting his actions and the only person shown to agree with him is someone who laughs behind his back while benefiting from his incompetence) but yet he is the most powerful man in Rome .
.Maximus is one sided character like i want to go home and see my family , he is shown as the typical hero who lost something and came back seeking revenge . is another cartoonish figure where he keeps reminding everyone that he wants to see his family , he never loses in a fight and he doesn't deal with his injuries seriously like tiger bites are not that painful . he doesn't have any inner conflicts except that his family got murdered . no other real motives like saving Rome or change it into a democracy or fulfilling the king's wish but he replaces all of this to die and see his wife in heaven which is something that a poorly written character might think of .

The characters are great, you may prefer sisterhood of the traveling pants.
