A very interesting conversation on Indian Philosophy,
Talked about Vedas , Shad Darshan, Upanishads , Athesim , Theism ,and the profound implications each has on the understanding of existence and the nature of the self. We delved deeper into the Vedas, exploring their role as the foundation of Indian thought, emphasizing how the Rigveda's hymns not only reflect devotion but also serve as philosophical inquiries into the cosmos.
The Shad Darshan, or six systems of philosophy, became a centerpiece of our dialogue, highlighting the contrasts and complements between Nyaya, Vaisheshika, Samkhya, Yoga, Mimamsa, and Vedanta. We dissected how each school approaches the nature of reality, knowledge, and liberation, articulating their unique perspectives on the material and the metaphysical.
As the discussion flowed, we touched upon the Upanishads, those enigmatic texts that transcend ritualism to seek the essence of the Atman and Brahman, delving into the profound questions of identity and ultimate truth. The idea that "Tat Tvam Asi" (That Thou Art) resonated deeply, prompting thoughts about the unity of the individual soul with the universal spirit.
We also confronted the dichotomies of atheism and theism within the Indian framework. Atheism, often misconstrued as mere denial, revealed itself as a rich philosophical stance that allowed for rigorous skepticism and inquiry. On the other hand, theism emerged not just as blind faith but as a thoughtful embrace of a divine order that many schools, particularly in Bhakti movements, leveraged to cultivate a personal connection to the divine.

      My take :
About sati : of course it was a practiced but not as widely as it has been shown or perceived or taught to us..... I think it become so bcz of it's nature it was cruel practice....was best propaganda for missionaries and British....You know rath yatra (juggernaut 😄) was also depicted in similar fashion as sati to the Western world by British and missionaries to demand permission from royalty to start their missionary of civilising Hindu in India by converting them.....
And about caste of course there was caste there is caste and it will remain here for time to come...but it was not the way it is now when caste was inscribed by British (caste census) on paper permanent FOR YEARS TO COME it changed its form.... To understand THIS just read about how caste census was done and what difficulty British faced and how they solved it or misrepresented it in census ....you may start with book Caste of the mind.

Vedas are not theoretical only but also practical. Here all the descriptions are based on theoretical reasoning and so gets away from the real thing. They describe 8 limb yoga as 8 steps yoga which is away from even dictionary meaning of limb. if we ignore that otherwise is interesting for a person who is ignorant of these things. Sankara was not against sankhya but against the over preponderance of vedic rituals and that is why his discussion with Mandan Mishra is famous. The problem with speaker is that he no where uses that it is his understanding instead he makes it sound that whatever he speaks is final. That shows his inexperience and lack of real knowledge. Again on Gita description of guna has been wrongly interpreted as getting birth from a family whereas any person can be born with sattvic gunas from any family. Yes, majority of persons may get qualities from his parents but isnt it proved through modern DNA theory?

You should not have this question if you have actually studied this stuff. We took concepts which were for good, manipulated and exploited it for our benefits. And we are continuously doing so, except now the oppressed are the oppressors. This cycle will definitely repeat itself until people like us stop thinking of past and do what is right.
