    Nice Job! I too would skip the safety gear. But my family depends on me to do it again tomorrow and the next day. I don't want them to have to worry or have to take care of me if I get messed up. Glasses, plugs and now a hard hat since I got clobbered by 6' of dead pine from a 40' drop. God Bless You Always, you have a real talent there.

  • @bearbait2050
    @bearbait2050 5 ปีที่แล้ว +11

    A hard hat costs $12.00
    Saw chaps are 70.00
    Ear plugs .99 cents
    Might save a life.

      FWIW - ear plugs can mess with some people's inner ear and balance. So there actually can be a bigger risk using them.
      I'm really not sure what the hearing protection solution would be for those people

    Nice job with a great saw. My only comment is I would have had the guy with the wedges bring a man size hammer.

  • @Treeesmith

    Good job on throwing around an 88 wearing a 5' bar, that's not easy so well done there, nice chain too.
    PPE is a different story, it's easy to dismiss it but when the shit hits you'll regret it. You'll wish you had chaps when there's blood pouring out of the shattered ripped mess that used to be a human, you'll wish you were wearing a hat when a lump of deadwood falls on you from above, they're regularly fatal. You also wish you were wearing eye protection when you get a face full of small hardwood dust, causing you to lose sight and possibly control of the tree you're felling which puts everyone else in danger. And in the future when your hearing is shot, guess what, you can tell everyone how you wish you'd worn ear protection. If you want to be seen as professional you have to act like one

    • @crapfield500
      @crapfield500 10 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      This guy is just way to aggressive, when it comes to big fell its best to take your time and wedge it rather than keep the saw running until its hit the ground. For all he knew that tree could of back jumped and crush him...

      They help roll the tree in a particular direction once the hinge cut opens and the notch collapses.

    • @tomh4685
      @tomh4685 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      but you dont pop them in when your still cutting the notch.

    • @tomh4685
      @tomh4685 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      My best guess is he was trying to pop the notch out and shear off small pieces the operator may have missed..

    • @mgtpa4
      @mgtpa4 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yes, a bit unusual but at 3:10 into the video look at the size of that wedge. He about busted a gizzard trying to pick it up. I think a plastic wedge was tapped in just keep the saw blade from pinching until the notch cuts were complete.

      thats an 880 stihl magnum. no amount of safety gear is gonna stop that thing when its out of control. sometimes the safety gear is more of a hazard. you have too much hanging off you the greater the chance something might get hung up. happened to giy using a wood chipper. safety gear got hung up and drug him through it.

    • @k3ith29
      @k3ith29 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      if that thing got out of control, there would be a sawed off leg with orange safety chaps.

    They really set those wedges, don't they?
    Tree that big starts to lean me and my saw are somewhere else!

      The rakes need filed down a bit. That yields the bigger chips of course the kick back is more violent. But you're right when that 🌳 starts ta go . Get the hell outta there.

  • @michaeldose2041
    @michaeldose2041 7 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    Somebody should tell this guy about a Humboldt notch. Also once the tree starts to fall that is your clue to STOP cutting and start moving on your escape route that you pre-planned at a 45 degree angle to the hinge. I guess that assumes this guy knows what a hinge is and what 45 degrees means. That could be a stretch. The saw operator should definitely buy some life insurance. One more helpful hint, don't mention this video to the insurance company.

    Glad I found this, LMAO right now ! I don't know whats more funny, the dwarf who can't hold the saw up, or the goofy helper who enters the frame with a claw hammer and can't hit the wedge ! You should have to be at least 48" tall to use a MS880 !

    I’m not an arborist but handling a big saw like that requires skill, strength and experience. Possessing only two of the three can likely get you killed. Look Mom one hand on the saw, walking around while cutting-WTF! A saw needs to be handled with precision and respect, these guys are lucky they didn’t get themselves in deep Doo-Doo. Unfortunately, common sense isn’t so common these days.

    Safety is important,but most of the negative comments are from pros who don't what anyone using a saw but them.Because the more people learn the job, the less work they get.And it's a bit off that thing, when a new guy starts logging, he is a green bean learning,then when he has got his qualifications in the field ,he thinks he knows it all,and when a new kid comes he gets belittled like when he started

I hate it when one of us has to sharpen this bad boy. Once we hit concrete that was in a tree and it was forever to get it sharp again. We use a wedge and an ax to jack a tree over (but a claw hammer works too). Oh, BTW, we don't wear all the extra crap either - I'm 62 yrs old, been cutting for a LONG time, since high school.

    • @corpsiecorpsie_the_original
      @corpsiecorpsie_the_original 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's actually a complex question. There are times when normal PPE can become a liability. An example is a helmet normally worn by a bomb squad technician. Not wearing the helmet means you get burned. Wearing the helmet means you get decapitated.
      Whether or not the guy in this video made the the correct decision depends on a whole lot of information we don't get to see in this video

    I disagree with some of the comments below, first of all I not only have great balls but for your info they are made of titanium and not steel like some. I would have no problem cutting that tree and would do it wearing eye protection along with ear plugs topped over with ear muffs for added eardrum protection. Secondly I would of kept that goober with the wedges and carpenter hammer, lol far out of the way since he certainly did not have a fucking clue on what to do or how to do it. Nice saw though and it appeared to be cutting quick and straight which is a good sign of the owner. Next time keep that gumby with the wedges out of site he ruins your clip pretty badly and try to keep a good sized splitting maul handy for driving a wedge or two if needed and not a homeowners carpenter hammer which is really inadequate to say the least.

      And yet he dropped it fast and with great precision. Sound like he knows what he is doing and you do not. Also the second and third cuts were not notches, he was removing the hips of the base so they would not hinder the fall.

    Oh my god. Wedging the notch??? Like thats not going to pinch the chain. Well it might have if he'd used a propper hammer. The way the cutter handles that saw, I would take some solace in the fact that he is more likely to pick up a "Darwin Award" before he drops a tree on an innocent bystander.

    No helmet. No ear protection. No safety gear. No clue. This is obviously a total rookie showing of his giant MS880, another give away is the wa-wa-wa-wa-wa throttle guy, "Just hold it down man.
