4 Years Alcohol Free - How Life is Better Without the Booze

  • Four years ago I finished travelling the world by bike and found myself in a slump. I was drinking more than is healthy and was waking up with hangovers far too frequently. I stopped drinking for a few weeks and found my energy improved and I felt fresh. I slept better and no longer had to contend with hangovers. The weeks turned into months, the months turned into years.
Now four years on, I am still no longer drinking alcohol. Here I wanted to share some of my thoughts as I approach a new milestone,.

In 3 days I’ll be 10,000 days without alcohol 🍺 that’s 27 years, 4 months and 17 days, makes me feel old 😅

@@omare_biketonature Why do people count days? Alcohol leaves your system in 5 days. So anything after that doesn’t matter much, right?

    • @PathfinderBikepacking
      @PathfinderBikepacking  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

For many people, counting the days is important for reasons beyond just the physical presence of alcohol in their system.
It represents their commitment to a healthier lifestyle and helps them stay accountable.
Additionally, by quitting alcohol, they’re also stopping negative behaviors associated with it, which is a significant achievement and deserves recognition.

I'm 51. Always been fairly active but alcohol is problematic for me.
I'm not a huge drinker but I'm also bad at just keeping to a couple of drinks.
I gave up drinking for a year back in 2016. I felt great!
I'm coming to a point where I need to address the issue again.
    I feel I'm ready.
    Thanks for your videos

Been about a year or so since I commented on 1 of your vids and what a completely different person I feel like now. So glad that's in the past with my alcohol binging etc. I made the mistake of counting days as I was wishing the days away to get to x amount of days sober. For me anyway not counting days help. Yourself and other youtubers have really helped me so a massive thank you! Great to not wake up and dread what I did or didn't do the night before 😂

Amazing. I'm 40 and only just getting sober after many lapses. I've had to go to AA to keep myself accountable. Great to see how you've achieved it and very inspiring to others

Very commendable that you identified the aspects in your life that held you back, then changed your path toward a brighter future. That’s honorable and inspiring.

Thanks for your video, Adam. You said what I really wanted to say from my heart because I also completely quit for years (over 7 years to be exact), and I feel the same way you described how good a life one can have when they just don't drink. There's one tip I'd like to share with someone who is from to time face craving for a sip, is to consume sweets, especially chocolate. No alcohol would "taste good" when your mouth is full of the taste of sweets. Thanks again, Adam, look forward to seeing your 5th year anniversary video of sobriety. Cheers, from Hong Kong.

"Hey Adam, just wanna share a bit. I've watched all of your cycling series as I was planning my own cycling trip around Europe and Asia. Back when you first announced you were stopping booze, I was like "good for him but can't really relate, I only drink in social events, never alone, don't like the feeling of being too drunk then hungover".
I do like the way it makes socializing easier sometimes, but even then I never felt I needed it to interact. It's been now a few weeks since I've stopped smoking tobacco and weed though, and after years and years of lying to myself "welp it's my drug of choice, I don't really do anything else".
I came to realize that my attitude was exactly the same as alcoholism. I'd smoke almost every day, only managed to stop during my cycling trip and the occasional 1-2 week holidays. Maybe I wouldn't have needed to stop if my weed use was like my booze use, only in social settings, sometimes weeks/months apart and I never ever crave alcohol. But it's not the case, I'm 35 in a few days now and it took 17 years of dependence but now I do feel like I have a more sincere picture of myself and my addiction. Anyway, thanks for sharing, all the best and I'm not sure I've ever commented before but since I'm at it, thanks for the cycling vids, they were a great inspiration alongside with Iohan's. (English isn't my main language, sorry if I butchered some sentences)
    All the best!"

Change is tough. Especially when it’s not obvious to ourselves. It sounds like you’re in a stronger place already and will continue to build on that.
Thanks for watching the bike videos. To be mentioned alongside Iohan is a real honour. What a man!

Don't count, stay sober one day at a time. Can't drink yesterday as its gone, can't drink tomorrow as it hasn't happened yet.
As a wise man said to me once, are you counting away from or to the next drink.

Really enjoyed this video and have been reducing my drinking so that I can stay active and do biking trips. I just turned 40 and know that if I want to be able to do more bike camping and run every day, which I love so much, I need to keep healthy. Ive gone mutiple years without drinking and Im on 6 months or so now. It makes a huge difference in the way I feel and I find it to be so much less effort to not drink then to try to moderate it.

    I’m 105 days in.
I turned 60 and want to go the decade with no alcohol.
I’ve only had a glass of wine at my daughters college graduation lunch And it was wonderful and right, and then back to not drinking.
My son doesn’t graduate for three more years, so I’m good 😂

  • @vacher45

I've tried moderating and the buzz roughly last 20-60 mins. It can't be achieve again after the first two beers. I was caught in the cycle of thinking about it during the day, how much, what percentage. A waste of time for 30 mins of buzz.

My problem was replacing the booze. Buying more to keep high.
Driving, riding my bike to get to the liquor store, while buzzed! DUI in States for riding ebike drunk.

I stopped drinking alcohol 6 months ago at aged 58. I feel the same as you I dont want to have "just one" which I know would lead to more. The only issue I have now is a chocolate biscuit addiction, any advice on that ? Theres no stigma about non alcoholic beer either.

It will be a year of sobriety for me in July. I feel great, but I have been part of this group for twelve years, where drinking is part of life. Now I just want to get out of that group, but I am scared of telling that to them.

Realised it was a waste of time and money. When it started impacting my work and other hobbies I enjoy I knew it was time to stop. Most of my time was spent in bed during the weekend recovering from the Friday antics.

    What are the disadvantages.

    • @PathfinderBikepacking
      @PathfinderBikepacking  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

There’s clearly no health disadvantages to stopping drinking. The main disadvantages are individual and socially focused.
      Social Considerations:
Men, in particular, can sometimes face more pressure to drink in social settings. This pressure might come from friends or within specific work environments.
Alcohol often plays a role in some business or career networking events. Not drinking could be perceived as less social in these scenarios, potentially making it a bit harder to build connections (though this is definitely not always the case).
If you decide to stop drinking, be prepared for some adjustments and perhaps awkward questions.
It may be helpful to develop a few standard responses to inquiries about your choices that you are comfortable with.
Seek out new activities and ways of socialising that don't center around alcohol consumption.

    Well done ✔️ 👍
But I like alcohol, I like the feeling of being social (not drunk just a few beers)
Life would be more boring without it
But also drinking every day makes it boring, it just becomes your routine
The key for me is just drink maybe once or twice a week but never have too many.

    • @PathfinderBikepacking
