I am from Askern and now live in Manchester. This made me cry knowing these people and related to one of them. I work in Care and see how the elderly struggle. This winter there will be a rise in deaths and will Kier Starmer be charged as he took their winter allowance away while MPs get to keep theirs. Yes we’ve worked all our lives for a state pension. Seems like the only way to survive in old age now is to claim social security benefits and not work then you can get all the pension benefits and everything else that goes with.

I wouldn't mind a miners pension (plus the free coal!), I get state pension plus £109pm from a small occupational pension yet I lost the winter fuel allowance too. As I pointed out to Ian Lavery, my Labour MP, how does he square that with the £4750 pay increase MPs are getting this year? According to him it's not his fault because it is set by IPSA??? and, of course, it is the government that appoints IPSA.

( we'd save for months to get that money) She got sod all from my sisters. Mum would object, but we said it was an extra Christmas gift, so she had to take it. She died 3 years ago and, for her sake, I'm glad. ( though I miss her terribly) She'd have been out of her mind with worry, and we couldn't afford to pay more, to cover the increases in utilities. We have our own home to pay for. She had good friends and neighbours, and wouldn't move in with us. (thank God, she wasn't an easy woman) She worked all her life. Just had the basic state pension, so no help with her rent and bills. Labours not starting off well, and that's a huge understatement!!

Harold Wilson on This Week back in the 60's , was extensively quizzed on the probability of a pension shortfall, if I remember correctly he said there was enought to cover todays pensioners . Then he said the future will have to look after itself, back then the "deal" was you had to pay into the welfare state to get anything out ! How much has been put on your rates to pay for "refugees" , when you get your bin emptied every fortnight, have to take other things to a recycling centre (which isn't just round the corner). A couple of winters ago we didn’t put the heating on for 12 months. Place was full of mould which we still can’t get rid of. This winter is a scary one. Probably no heating again. Biggest problem is getting the washing dry.

As a pensioner (72) I pay my fuel bills monthly. I am in front with a bit extra so that I can put my heating on in winter. That is if the price doesn't go up to much. I will get fuel allowance but for those just above the threshold I think it is disgusting.
You clearly have the right attitude. I do the same,that is pay extra every month, so I can have some heating. Sunak took away my warm home discount. Nobody should receive a winter fuel allowance: they should learn how to budget properly. It is unfair and discriminatory for pensioners to have a fuel allowance and not anyone else.

We had a 3 bedroom 'fridge' in 1950s when I was born. No double glazing, no cavity walls, no loft insulation, outside loo,( we use the po under our beds at night). No central heating, just a coal fire and we used the tin bath in front of the fire, and an Ascot heater for hot water. Winter of 1963 the frost was on the INSIDE of our bedroom window! Happy Days. We might end up back there. My generation ( what's left), are ready Lol.
It's not just pensioners who need the winter fuel money. I'm on min wage and hubby on small private pension. Can't claim benefits although we are on the breadline. Really struggle paying bills.

I am from Askern and now live in Manchester. This made me cry knowing these people and related to one of them. I work in Care and see how the elderly struggle. This winter there will be a rise in deaths and will Kier Starmer be charged as he took their winter allowance away while MPs get to keep theirs. Labour used to be for the working class and Askern has always been a Labour village. Kier Starmer has done more damage in the last few months than Margaret Thatcher in her reign in government.I would like a Labour MP to live their life for a month and tell us they could manage. Labour were voted in by what has to be the biggest land slide victory in history, Conservative DID WARN EVERYONE and the vast majority of pensioners voting for Labour. Now they have to take the medicine and turn the page as Labour stated before the election. I doubt most people even watched any of the TV debates and got the Conservative warning message. The problem was both Boris and his right wingers finished that party off.

When pensioners were younger, they had to save for years to get a foot on the housing ladder and when they did, they were paying 15% interest on mortgages. They didn't have mobile phones, computers, or all the gadgets and luxuries younger folk take for granted. Many didn't have a car either.
We lived in 2 rooms in someone else's house for 5 years while we saved for a deposit. You are in cloud cuckoo land.

We used to have to choose between heating and food. So we would just were extra clothes or go to the library or stay under the bed covers to stay warm.

You are part of the problem then. You should have looked at reform. Policies as they were the only ones that were costed out. As an ex banker and accountant, stopping payments to banks on interest the government prints would save a lot of cash which could have been injected in more schemes to help the cost of living and investment into the country. Yes we’ve worked all our lives for a state pension. Seems like the only way to survive in old age now is to claim social security benefits and not work then you can get all the pension benefits and everything else that goes with.

As I pointed out to Ian Lavery, my Labour MP, how does he square that with the £4750 pay increase MPs are getting this year? According to him it's not his fault because it is set by IPSA??? and, of course, it is the government that appoints IPSA.

( we'd save for months to get that money) She got sod all from my sisters. Mum would object, but we said it was an extra Christmas gift, so she had to take it. She died 3 years ago and, for her sake, I'm glad. ( though I miss her terribly) She'd have been out of her mind with worry, and we couldn't afford to pay more, to cover the increases in utilities. We have our own home to pay for. She had good friends and neighbours, and wouldn't move in with us. (thank God, she wasn't an easy woman) She worked all her life. Just had the basic state pension, so no help with her rent and bills.

Starmer has already withdrawn the Labour whip from rebels who will not toe the Red Tory line. If you have a Labour MP write to him/her and make it clear that if they rebel and they are kicked out you will support them and vote for them at the next election, whether they stand as an Independent, Real Labour or whatever else. Starmer needs to be shown he can't rely on the working class vote just because Labour are not Tories.
And if you are an immigrant who has reached retirement age you can apply for a UK state pension despite not paying a penny in.

Harold Wilson on This Week back in the 60's , was extensively quizzed on the probability of a pension shortfall, if I remember correctly he said there was enought to cover todays pensioners . Then he said the future will have to look after itself, back then the "deal" was you had to pay into the welfare state to get anything out ! How much has been put on your rates to pay for "refugees" , when you get your bin emptied every fortnight, have to take other things to a recycling centre (which isn't just round the corner). The current gov't see the pensioners as a soft target ! probably guilty of right wing thuggery while working as they will have participated in strikes. A couple of winters ago we didn’t put the heating on for 12 months. Place was full of mould which we still can’t get rid of. This winter is a scary one. Probably no heating again. Biggest problem is getting the washing dry.

When we were young we used to sit round a candle to keep warm, and when it got really cold my Dad would light it.
As a pensioner (72) I pay my fuel bills monthly. I am in front with a bit extra so that I can put my heating on in winter. That is if the price doesn't go up to much. I will get fuel allowance but for those just above the threshold I think it is disgusting.
You clearly have the right attitude. I do the same,that is pay extra every month, so I can have some heating. Sunak took away my warm home discount. Nobody should receive a winter fuel allowance: they should learn how to budget properly. It is unfair and discriminatory for pensioners to have a fuel allowance and not anyone else.

We had a 3 bedroom 'fridge' in 1950s when I was born. No double glazing, no cavity walls, no loft insulation, outside loo,( we use the po under our beds at night). No central heating, just a coal fire and we used the tin bath in front of the fire, and an Ascot heater for hot water.
Winter of 1963 the frost was on the INSIDE of our bedroom window! Happy Days. We might end up back there.
