I had my below knee amputation February 25th and I still don't have a prosthetic. I feel the struggle. I am currently in grad school, and I'm struggling staying "happy" or "inspirational" (as people say). Happy to see mental health topics come up because the struggle is real. Hope to have a leg soon, tired of being in a chair! Hope you adjust well to your prosthetic.
Great job on video Jo , like always. I was looking through your videos the other day and saw the one where you and your husband did one together. I thought it was one of the most entertaining ones you have ever done . Would really like to see you guys do more of them together. Your husband like yourself, is a very likable and entertaining individual and really filled in an element to you”re story that really brought everything together since you are a married woman. Not to take anything away from your personal struggles , but since there are really two of you going through this , it just seemed to really complete the picture . Hope to see more of him and maybe a “ Brian a day will keep the creeps away “ LOL
Hearing you say that mental illness was more disabling for you than losing a leg is making me feel many things. I appreciate that you open up about your mental health and I am so sorry that it was that hard on you. It was also really validating for me to hear that others with mental illness have found it disabling because so many people refuse to believe that it can get that bad. I appreciate everything you do so much, and even though I’m not an amputee your story and your stubborn hope make me feel less alone.
KiKianaKi, thank you so much for this comment....and you are more than welcome. its true - what I've dealt with (and deal with) mentally has absolutely been worse than what I've dealt with with my leg so far. i feel like that sounds like CRAZY talk to so many people, but people like you get it. I'm glad it was validating for you to hear...it is validating for me to hear you say it back. Thank you for reminding me that I am also less alone 😊
When are you doing another live Q & A? I REALLY want to "meet you" and ask you a few questions, as I have been injured and life has been ON HOLD for the past 5 years while I've been going through surgery after surgery (13 total so far) and I am so grateful for you and your courageous public speaking, It's insane how many times I have been like "YES! ME!" when you say something about your thoughts and/or emotional process regarding your injury, disability, and pain.. Hoping I get to speak with you soon :)
Loosing a foot is the most painful, deep mental experience I've ever have gone thru....yet if it wasn't for you and your videos I'd never have the strength to do what I did this Monday....thank you so much Jo for being my support group...and thank you her fellow fans without any of you id would have given up a Long time ago. 4:10 I know *EXACTLY* how you feel. My mental heath issues are far *FAR* more disabling than my leg. My leg is practically nothing. I have hiked to the river and back in one day at the Gran Canyon. It's a hike so hard, so many people have tried and failed, and needed to be rescued, that the park has outlawed the hike. This is, by the way Jo, I hike I expect you to complete as well.
@@FootlessJo I think you will be able to do it. Of course, if you just want to *SAY* you did it.... Frankly I enjoyed doing the hike a lot more than I enjoy saying I did it.
Jo, have you considered becoming a therapist? I know pretty much nothing about you, but some of your insights revealed in your channel, IMHO, lead me to believe you'd be one of the best of all time. Seriously.
I so agree.... just existing does take so much energy. Sometimes I wonder when I will get my strength back after hip replacement. It does get discouraging. I so get it. You are such an inspiration. 🤗💗😎
I'm so sorry you had to go through a hip replacement - but so hope that it helps, and I really hope that strength comes back soon! I know it takes so long....it can feel like forever. It definitely gets discouraging. But we can both do this! 🤗💗

Thank you for being so honest on ure videos xxxxx
Failed surgery syndrome can be caused by a sacral spinal cyst Im hesitant to mention this for its hard to diagnose. But you might be able to tell if so yourself. If doing the dishes tears you to pieces this is the #1 way to irritate the cyst.
Another great video!! I have a question! :D Have you ever thought about training or getting a Service dog to help you? Such as picking up dropped items and handing it to you, mobility help so like if you fall or something it can help u get up, bringing you things such as water bottles from the fridge, your medicine, or even your Iwalk or leg once u get one, so you don't have to go through the extra effort, bracing so if you get tired of walking on your foot you can lean on the dog and rest a minute, helping to hold a bag of groceries so if your hands are full and u need help,, and it can even be trained Anxiety and panic attaches such as deep pressure therapy (Laying on your lap), crowed control (circling around you to keep your bubble) block (standing behind you in line so you feel secure) and even PTSD tasks like waking you from nightmares, and things like that? Have you thought about looking into it or do you think this would benefit you?
Such a great question! YES! I have thought about that actually...my younger Shepherd, Sophie, is ridiculously smart. Like, we have to keep thinking of things to keep her mind occupied because she is so crazy intelligent. I know she'd be easy to train, and would make an amazing service dog (the only question is how she would be in public, she's always been amazing, but service dogs need to be basically perfect in public all the time haha). My big Shepherd Sadie is actually an official Emotional Support Animal for my PTSD and is magic and helps me so much. I'd love to train one or both of them to help out more with tasks and also with things like deep pressure therapy - or licking. I've found when I'm having a panic attack or flashback, something like my dog coming up and licking my hand can help ground me and bring me out of it.. So, that's a long response lol, but thanks for the suggestion, and yes, I've definitely thought about it!!!
@@FootlessJo That's so awesome, thanks for your reply!!! If you decide to train her and have any questions or want advice for task or Puplic acsess (PA) training, feel free to ask me!! I would reccomend if u want to train her and see how she does in a puplic setting, start out in pet friendly stores (like pet stores, home depot, some Ross dress for less allow pets (only certain stores tho) and other places that allow dogs) so u can start her distraction training and see how she does in that environment. U can start training her heel and focus around dogs and people! Start with short outings then move up duration and move to more and more distraction settings (such as restaurants, movie theaters, more distracting stores, and etc) ! Also just note, all Service dogs make mistakes as they are still living beings 😊 No SD is perfect 100 percent of the time, especially in the beginning of training when it's all new! (Even tho as handlers, we always show the best clips of them online, but they all make mistakes! lol my dogs first tine on the city but, he hopped on the seat and sat down and looked out the window bc that's where he thought he truly was supposed to be since in the car that's where he sits 😂🤦🏻♀️ Its hilarious now but at the time I was so embarrassed. But he was my puppy brained fluffy boy who hopped up there like "Whoohoo!" Of course as soon as I said "off" he went on the ground and tucked where I told him to and was like "Oh.." lol ) but So if she makes a mistake, all u have to do is tell her the command u want her to do, and reword the good behavior! My state allows a Service dog in training, and so after training in pet friendly places when I moved him to regular stores, he definitely made some mistakes! But with a in training Patch ppl are very understanding that they are learning and generally ppl are sweet and kind about it. But you just tell them the command u want and reword thegood behavior! So all SDs will make mistakes, but as long as they mind to commands that's what matters! I've heard Sheppards make great Service dogs! My Service dog is a F1B Goldendoodle (more poodle) but he's medical alerts/responses, phiscatric for PTSD, sever panic attacks, and mobility he also helps with some of my cognitive disabilities like my short term memory loss! So I can say from experience, puplic access training isn't the easiest thing in the world especially at first, but they catch on quickly and learn they love working!! And if she knows basics (focus, heel, under, and all the others lol) then Puplic acsess isn't too hard to train bc then when they get distracted they refocus easily with a command. But public access is all about going slow and steady! If the dogs stressed, leave early. Start with 5 minute trips to the grocery store, then move up duration and distraction settings! Do you know if your state recognizes a Service dog in training?
Hi Jo, you are such an ìnspiration. I became a bk amputee on 2/1/23 after 15 months battling infections in my left foot. After 3 attempts to salvage my foot I couldn't take it any longer and I forced the doctors to amputate. The final pathology report was that the infection had become gangrene. So I am in rehab learning to stand on one foot. Next week they are starting my prosthetic leg. I appreciate your videos.
i love my ratties ! their in a double critter nation & love their sisters ! sometimes i wish they didnt have to be houses in a pair or more because SO MUCH POOP haha , i love your videos & they help me alot throughout my day to day anxiety and depression.
6:30 I used to joke that for me walking 1 mile is like an AB walking 2. Energy wise though, it's closer to the AB person walking 4 miles. An SBK amputee uses 4 times the energy to walk that an AB person uses.
Hey Girl! I was checking iut this guy while at the gym. He had some amazing shoulders, upper body, cute face.. . When he left, I noticed a prosthetic leg. I hope he didn't think I was staring because of that because he was fine..
Just entered the give away because I am starting the process on getting my left leg cut off. Thanks to blood clots my leg is completely shot which makes it extremely painful to walk or do anything so now I have asked the doctors if we can start the process of cutting my leg off. Yes we have exhausted all of our options and now it's time for it to come off.
I'm so glad you entered! The iWalk has helped me so much...I'm so sorry that you have to go through this process of getting your leg cut off. We don't have the same life or experiences, but I understand a lot of what you're going through...I don't know how long you've been around on this channel, but if you go back to my first videos, it was all about deciding to cut my leg off and the first days/weeks/months, I hope it can help people know what to expect. It can be an exhausting decision to make, but when you know what is right...you know. I'll be thinking of you. I hope the process goes smoothly and you find amazing and understanding doctors and supporters!
@@FootlessJo I have been watching your videos for the past week and i have seen every single one. i enjoy your content and i am so glad that you are putting yourself out there for others so that we can get a little glimps and try to understand what its like to go through the process of being an amputee. Thank you so much.
I really identify with the word disabled. Jessica Kellgren-Fozard did an interview a little while ago that hit the nail on the head for my views on that word. I really dislike a lot of the cutesy terms that have been proposed as alternatives. The most heinous being "handicapable". For a pacifist, I have very violent thoughts about people who use that word. Also when people tell me not to call myself disabled like its a bad thing that I am.
Handicapable makes me want to hulk out and flip tables. I hear you on that....I love what Jessica has to say about all of it! She's incredible. Its so funny, I was litereally thinking about this moment earlier today - when I was a kid and dealing with ankle issues initially, my mom told me "never think of yourself as disabled!" like it was some bad thing...it isn't.. At all.. I am disabled. I don't "feel' that word presently, but I am. Thanks for sharing your thoughts here! :-)
I've been considering possibly getting an Iwalk as I have upper body issues that make it incredibly painful and damaging to use crutches or even my walking stick sometimes, but I also have unstable ankles and sprain them all the time so having something like that around might come in handy, but I also have problems with my knees, so I don't want to spend the money to get one only to have it flare up my knee pain.
I have seen one TED talk about Bionics and what they are doing in association with Stanford and MIT about making an artificial foot and/or legs that analyze exactly what you're doing and how you're locomoting yourself and applying force and assisting your steps so as to make it so you're not limping, but taking normal steps. I forget who was presenting the talk, but I do remember he was an amputee both legs above the knee. I hope I helped. Let me know if and when you find that talk. I think you'll like it very much.
George Busby I think I’ve seen that one!! The developments are incredible! As I understand it (happy to be wrong! Lol) developments with that kind of tech are way more advanced for above knee than below knee amputees because the joints need to work together. It’s a more complicated system. There is an Ossur bionic ankle but (again, what I’ve heard) for below knee that is bulky and “loud” but has great promise. So I think the developments are right there! But also expensive....I’m totally open to trying it in the near future!!
Not a Patreon but like your channel. Two people walking side by side down the sidewalk. No noticeable differences in gait etc - one is an amputee other not. The amputee generally expending 50-70% more energy. 👍 I just say I’m physically challenged. From one who spent a lot of years with my finger down my throat - in the end it was all about control. Me trying to be all things to all people ... trying to live up to others expectations - my perception not theirs. Got over it - moved on. Looking back I’m a better person because of it. Sort of that trendy Mary Englebright sketch: “Life can only be understood Backward: but must be lived Forward.” 🍀
8:00 I know this one, because you can't see us seeing you. It makes a huge difference when you can see the people seeing you compared to when you can't I saw an interview with an actress who was known for appearing nude in film, but she dressed quite modestly when in public. She was perfectly okay with being nude on screen, but in person she could see all the people who were seeing her.
What an insightful comment, Eric! Thank you so much...that actually makes a lot of sense to me and is probably a lot of why I'm so much more comfortable "Alone" yet in front of thousands than in public. I appreciate that!
OMG!! Jo...i luv u just that much more, now that i seen u with a pet rat!! for anybody that has had or know somebody is had a pet rat… You will have no reservations or stigmata about them ever again! They are very smart, believe it or not they are very clean… I let the mom and her two daughters run around my bedroom, a bedroom and I keep fastidiously clean, they live in the bottom drawer on my dresser’s they go the bathroom and one corner of the dresser which I just put little newspaper lids down, and then throw those away to three times a week. they are very loyal to, no anything it’s bad about them is they only live about 2 or three years- you get used to them and become very important part of your life, and then their dad… So if you get easily attached to your pets and have a very very rough time losing one of your “children“.... I don’t recommend buying a pet rat.
Forgive me for what I’m about to say. Seeing your Rat eating your Iwalk reminded me of a story. Many years ago my brother-in-law had to get new dentures because mice had chewed them up. Once again I’m so sorry for the mental imagery that came with this short story. I’m sorry 😐 LOL
I feel like we would get along great! I live in Denver and I have three pet rats as well. They are all girls. I have a different disability called ehlers Danlos syndrome! It has caused a lot of chronic pain in my hips.
Kayla Curtis hi from down the road here in the Springs! I love that you are a rat mom too!!! 😀 I’m actually really familiar with EDS and I’m looking into getting tested for it because of the symptoms I’ve had for years...I’m so incredibly sorry you have to deal with all the pain and symptoms that come with it! From what I understand, it is so hard to deal with. You’re awesome girl. 😊 Thanks for sharing a bit of your story here!!
I have six little girl rats and they are so sweet to have them of my friends but they live at my house I just would like to see more videos of your rat LOL THX
I have 4 limbs but one of them my left leg doesn't work well do to a tumor in my hip my right ankle also randomly decides to just throw my chubby butt on the ground... I empathize with being exhausted... But if my mental health is bad... Sometimes breathing is exhausting
You have the best personality. Someone for sure I would want in my friends circle and someone I would want as a best friend. Your amazing Jo. And I love your rats. Thinking of getting rats but I also really want a cat so how do you deal with having both and the cats not trying to get at them through the cage?
I was hoping that you would upload today. My week got even worse after spending 4 and a half hours trying to get SQL code to work in computer science and it still does not work properly and that is quite frustrating.
I took one intro programming course and I was like, ya no not for me. My final was an apology for not studying for the final. I got a D. But since it was elective that counts as a pass lol
@@FootlessJo I tagged you in some pictures on Twitter. The only bad thing about rats that I have a hard time overlooking is the short time they spend with us. My dog is an amazing part of my life, but even he doesn't show me the kind of affection some of my rats show me. At least he loves his rat siblings. One of the videos I tagged you in is him showing one of my girls a bunch of love.
Tattoo for your leg suggestion..your kind elephant! My tattoo got destroyed in the amputation only a little was left. I’m searching for a appropriate one 😝. Your an awesome beautiful girl. God Bless you!
I have chronic pancreatitis I think myself is disabled from the time before I had chronic pancreatitis. Before chronic pancreatitis I play all sports, love play hockey. I still love hockey now I have adapted to the way I love the game. I watch alot of hockey and play hockey on the Xbox one. My gamer tag is (Hutchinhole). How does one start up a you tube channel. I would to share my life with chronic pancreatitis.
I was able to figure out that the part of my leg that they removed weighed about 7lbs, so I figure taking the recommended healthy ranges and just subtracting that amount for the future makes sense.
I'm sorry I can't afford to support you, I'm on disability for mental health issues. But I have said nice things here, and I really need an I-walk. I'm hoping maybe they will send me on on a discount.
Oh goodness, Eric, please never apologize for not being able to support me financially - I love being able to do what I do and having you here to listen means so much to me, that is a ton of support! @@FootlessJo I don't want to enter the contest, because I'm fairly sure I can get one discounted or free, it's just a matter of working it out. If I won the i-Walk, some other person who needs it won't be able to get one. I'll take your offer of helping me find help through the company though.
I starred at an older man with prosthetic leg, looked like a vet to me. I starred thinking about him, and praying for him, because I CARED. I was going to offer him the scooter I was using, at Lowe's, but there was a few at the entrance. He said, "IF YOU'D LOSE SOME WEIGHT, YOU WOULD NOT NEED THAT SCOOTER!", that hurt my feelings coming from another disabled person. I resisted using scooters and my wife and daughter had to talk me into using it. I have multiple issues, but mainly ostioarthritis, seviere back pain, high BP, and virtigo. What a smartass, he pissed me off, so I stared at him as if he was nuts, and went on my merry way. Some handicapped people lack empathy and niceness. I have gladly given my scooter up many times. I hope that I don't collapse in the store. Many stores don't have scooters, so I use a walker. I don't care if people stare. Some are considerate, some are not. Kids sometimes ask what's wrong , I explain. But insults just piss me off at such jerks. Some people stare because they care.

i love my ratties ! their in a double critter nation & love their sisters ! sometimes i wish they didnt have to be houses in a pair or more because SO MUCH POOP haha , i love your videos & they help me alot throughout my day to day anxiety and depression.
Such a wonderful video!!! But I knew it would be because you are wonderful!!!!!!!!
Awwww thank you so much Ellie, you are so sweet!!!
you and your videos are amazing! keep up the great work!!! 😀
Awww what a wonderful story! Thank you so much Anita! This made me smile :-)
@@FootlessJo Girl .. He was a cutie!
Thank you so much.
your a delight to listen too!
ZombieDoll that makes a lot of sense - I’m so sorry you have so many joint issues going on! That must be such a challenge. 💜
Love the Hunger Games reference!
8:00 I know this one, because you can't see us seeing you.
It makes a huge difference when you can see the people seeing you compared to when you can't
I saw an interview with an actress who was known for appearing nude in film, but she dressed quite modestly when in public.
Awww pet rats too. New to channel.
Love you loads 💕💕xxx
I have six little girl rats and they are so sweet to have them of my friends but they live at my house I just would like to see more videos of your rat LOL THX
I may have missed it but have you gotten your new prosthetic leg yet
@@skeetsmcgrew3282 normally I enjoy programming, I normally use C# but SQL is not fun.
Your rat babes are everything. My rat babes are everything. Rats are everything.
This comment is everything ;-) Haha but honestly rats are just amazing. So, so so so so sweet and innocent and mischievous and perfect.
For the average adult, that's 40 lbs for both legs.
I love your ratties 💞 so funny to see someone else struggle with trouble making girls.
💗
Thank you Honor 😊I was wonderful to see you in my Insta live stream the other day!
@@FootlessJo It was great being there and seeing you live 💗
I have chronic pancreatitis I think myself is disabled from the time before I had chronic pancreatitis. Before chronic pancreatitis I play all sports, love play hockey. I still love hockey now I have adapted to the way I love the game. I watch alot of hockey and play hockey on the Xbox one. My gamer tag is (Hutchinhole). How does one start up a you tube channel. I would to share my life with chronic pancreatitis.
6:10 "But there's nothing to eat up here.
Hahahah her thoughts exactly!!!
Why do I feel like the main topic of this video was ‘rats.’ 😆
Because.........it was. Lol. ;-)
I know the rat toe bite all too well. Only ever with socks, though.
Same!!! They love them.
More👏rats👏content👏
Yay for Rats!!!
Life of Palos I mean really the topic of this video was “rats” 😆
How do you know how much you should weigh as an amputee?
I was able to figure out that the part of my leg that they removed weighed about 7lbs, so I figure taking the recommended healthy ranges and just subtracting that amount for the future makes sense.
@@FootlessJo Thank-you.
As far as the iWalk, did you enter the giveaway? :-) Reach out to me via email after the giveaway IF you don't win and I'll see if I can't connect you with someone at the company to see if there is anything they can do!
I was going to offer him the scooter I was using, at Lowe's, but there
was a few at the entrance. He said, "IF YOU'D LOSE SOME WEIGHT,
YOU WOULD NOT NEED THAT SCOOTER!", that hurt my feelings coming
from another disabled person. I resisted using scooters and my wife and
daughter had to talk me into using it. I have multiple issues, but mainly ostioarthritis, seviere back pain, high BP, and virtigo. What a smartass, he pissed me off, so I stared at him as if he was nuts,
and went on my merry way.
I always wanted a rat.
Omg you have rats!!!! Same!!
I own 5 ratties xD
Yay for fellow rat parents!!!!
Jo, please never ever name your rat "Ben."
