Chainswords. Of all the weapons of 40K, even the blessed Bolter, noting epitomizes the level of balls-to-the-walls crazy, brutal and FUN of 40K, than having chainsaw-sword fights.
As a professional landscape gardener I can say with absolute confidence that a chainsword scares the living shit out of me. I've used chainsaws for a long time and have grown a very healthy measure of respect for the tool. Why is the chainsaw so dangerous? Because it does not cut, it does not saw nor does it grind - it planes. Every tooth is a miniature planer that planes out a splinter of whatever material it catches onto. Oh, about the whole notion of a chainsword catching onto something and digging into it? Very much true, ironically enough the same function is relied upon to stop the chainsaw, the teeth catch onto the nylon fiber's within a pair of safety chaps/pants/overalls and clogging up the drive sprocket inside the housing. Chainsword is truly a weapon to be feared.
Imagine this. You're on the battlefield when a hulking super soldier revs-up a chainsword, then you see and hear the hi-pitched agonizing screaming of the sword slowly ripping into the guy maybe a few meters away, his screaming is the only thing loud enough to be heard over the roaring Chainsword...until only the chainsword and the gore covered wielder remain. Then...he looks at you and takes a step towards you with the weapon growling in front of him, you know full well as does everyone around you, if that weapon connects that your death will be just as slow and horrible. THAT, is the intimidation factor of the chainsword.
except thats not how chainswords work, every description i have read is basicly them cutting trough the target about the same as a normal blade, quick and clean. No slow grinding messy passing one might imagine to experience if a modern chainsaw was used on them. About the psychological part, that would only work on some poorly trained troopes, traitor guardsmen and maybe some young orks. tyranids, chaos marines, necron, practically immune to that. Add to that the high maintenance requirement, personally i would not pick a chainblade over normal blade. To me it seems the bad way outweight the good.
Hears "Black and White" and stands a little taller. Hears "B.T." and leans closer to his monitor. Sees a Black Templar image and squeals with excitement. Well done.
If there is one thing I find slightly annoying, it's the fact that almost every iteration of the greenskins in games and videos shows them having red blood, when anyone know knows the setting will tell you it's green. Right, the other thing I found interesting in this is the mention Cesare Borgia. As someone who enjoyed Assassin's Creed 2 all the way to Revelations, I found the mention of that name oddly humorous.
I have to vouch for Occulus Imperia. His video on the Blood Angels and other Astartes is every bit as good as the videos here. Not to compare of course. But between Occula Imperia and Baldermort they are both the gold standard when it comes to Warhammer 40k lore videos.
Another brilliant guide to the world of Warhammer, Baldermort. Chainswords are easily one of the coolest things in a universe filled with really cool things. The idea of a giant super soldier with a chainsword running into combat against the vile xenos and heretics...it fills my heart with the Emperor's golden light.
I love chain swords, I can't tell you how many times a Chain sword helped my guard in conflicts. I know it's only one extra attack, but that extra die can be the attack that gets thru and kills the tau, space marine, demon, or ork I have faced time and time again on the table top. And now that I have some Catachan's I can't wait to see how they do on the table top. Also when I head Abundance, I got really excited, super pumped for where things are heading!
I've lost things with invulnerable saves against those things, and they're basically the one reason I like the Striking Scorpions more than the Warp Spiders.
