Just dropping in to say thanks for making this video. The Fiskars Pruner was the exact thing I've been needing but didn't know existed! I've been trimming stuff that had gotten overgrown for the past few days. I keep looking out the window admiring how much better it looks.
I completely agree with your method..i dont use chemicals at all, and my problem is in with my other plants anyway..ive been snipping at those two plants for years, and stinging nettke and other harmless weeds..very happy to find out that tool..i have had trouble reaching weeds as im working on a steep hill.
Just add a little tip definitely clean the tool when you’re done and I would recommend extend it rubber gloves 🧤 to wear. I am highly allergic to the Poison ivory

Well, thank you for this. I have 5 acres of woods, and parts of it are infested with spiky vines (Greenbriar vines I believe). Round-up is a no-no for me, so I will follow your method. I am old and not used to manual labor... so I calculate I will be done in about 20 years, if I get to live that much 😅. One step at the time.

Wash it with dawn dishwashing liquid or similar, now! In case some oil still there..then cover up with gloves..i recommend ichthammol oil to ease pain..however, it is a messy tar- like grease

Thank you, that's great that you got one. It's not free but it is very inexpensive compared to the "pro" models. The one in the video is over 10 years old and still going strong after hours and hours of use.

Don't want to touch poison ivy for sure but thorns are not poisonous so what I do is just dress appropriately with think mittens and pull them at base with roots (there are also almost no thorns there). The root system on these is actually really shallow and they come out very easy. That means that you don't have to deal with it next year.

@@ReelLowDad I always end up living next to swampy areas and the thorns and poison ivy love it. I didn't say it in the video but there is a lot of satisfaction every time you cut one of those stalks. Some of them end up choking our trees. Crazy stuff, I will be looking forward to your new video too!

I just had a run in with poison oak. I just want to tell you’ll if you get it. Save your self a lot of discomfort and money. Just go to the doctor and get it over with. Over the counter stuff is just a waste to money.

I recommend the ARS pole pruners. They weigh less and there's a $120 model that can be found at most smaller hardware stores. It;s trigger operated as apposed to pull. Gives you better control than the fiskars. Can't argue with the price of the fiskars though.

In addition to poisen ivy and wild roses I have a problem with volunteer ferns. Any suggestion for them would be appreciated.
I personally love ferns but sometimes they can be too much. I don't have that variety but many grow via runners so they can be dug up but more often I have just mowed or weed wacked them down as long as they are not poisonous.
You make it sound like poison ivy and/or thorns are going to kill you if you come in contact with them. Get good gloves, dress appropriately and you shouldn't have too much of an issue. Definitely agree with the don't weed whack or burn it part.
Hey. Not sure if you are still responding, but my backyard is 90% overgrown thorn. Would it be safe to just chemically kill them? There really isnt any other plant life back there in my yard
I will try again......is it enough to clean the tools with hidrogen peroxide since the tools seem to hold the oils of the ivy even if after two years you have used them?????? And also the clothes you weared by working outside just wash them in the machine????

OK, so once you've contaminated the cutting end with Poison Ivy oil, how do you clean it? Is there some solution you can soak the took in that will dissolve and neutralize the oil?

The poison ivy just comes back when you cut it, so this is fairly worthless.

Cutting part of the stem or trunk isn't an absolute. Uprooting and derooting will since both plants send runners underground.
What about back Locust trees? What do you do for them because they grow in large clusters.
When I find poison ivy, and it’s small enoug, I pull it out with a bag over my hands and then wrap the bag around the poison ivy and threw it out.
I have seen that done. If it was me I would get it all set and then realize the bag was ripped! DOH
Phew sounds good but I have an overgrown property of like 5 acres of just this stuff plus black locust. Not sure i could do that much!
Do you know if your Tenacity Herbicide, and Surfactant mix will kill poison ivy, Sumac, and oak if there's no other plants to worry about?
Its not rated for it but I know some people do use it with varying results. I would do it mechanicaly first and you might surprised how far you get like I did in this video.

What do you recommend cleaning the urishinol oils of your tools with?
I actually avoid it and have 5 gallon bucket in my shed. I put them all face down in it and just use it for that. That may not work for you so in that case you should use hot water and I like laundry soap for better sudsing.
Soak them in gasoline😁🤣
Will sticking the blade in dry rice sharpen them.
What is the name of the plant you are calling “thorns”, with the smooth, shiny leaves? Specifically, at 2:21. I’ve got that here and there. It is indeed hard to kill, I think because it has a big, tuberous root that can store a lot of energy. In one location I was able to stop it (so far! 🤞) by cutting it off at the ground, then covering it very well to cut off all sunlight. In other areas the struggle continues.

Greenbriar. I eat the new growth tips, has potassium, magnesium, vitamin c, etc. Then I cut it at 3" and 5" from the ground so to see that I've cut it already. I don't go walking around my yard without a scissor in my pocket. I'm in Florida, its a jungle out here.

Thank goodness I don't have poison ivy. But I do have that green briar. I cut it along my fencing, yes a bloody mess, but at least I get it before it goes to seed. We used to have contests to see who could dig up the biggest root/tuber. Old ones are probably 5lbs. No lie.

Poison ivy WILL NOT DIE if cut at the base. You need to remove all the roots with nodes on them!

So they can come back next year. You have to dig up the tubers and roots. Some of the tubers are the size of a tire or bigger. It's hard work. Didn't help at all.
I keep getting poison ivy from petting dogs. Once you have a rash it's too late.
If you go at it a little at a time you can wipe it out. I never spend more than 20 minutes at it but eventually you will get most or all of it gone.
I cut all the thorny and non thorny vines down off our chain link fence last spring/summer. Even cutting them at the base. We had lots of rain this spring and they came back with a vengeance. I feel defeated. Chemicals are my next move.
How do you clean ur tool to neutralize poison ivy
You can use hot water and dish or laundry soap but I just keep them upside down in a dedicated 5 gallon bucket. This way I skip cleaning them and they are safe. You just need to be sure no one else access the bucket or you should clean them after.
What do you use to clean the oils from the poisonous plants off the tools?
Yes soap and hot water or degreaser is good. My lower tech way is that I put the tools point down in a 5 gallon buccket just these ones You could also use a 4" piece of PVC which would take less space and just use it exclusively for this. But cleaning may be more practical. I just avoid touching them at all.
Interesting you finally would like to get rid of poison ivy at all times and also liberating tree trunks from being infested by it. Yet would you recommend to spray the tool after you used it with hydrogen peroxide??? Since the tool gloves and others will still keep the oil poisoning you even after two years later you have used them!!!!!! What is the best agent to clean your working tools even close that you wear while working on eliminating poison ivy would eventually get contaminated so is washing them in the machine do the job?
Is that poison ivy you're cutting in the video? I've been pulling weeds that look just like that by hand forever. I've always been scared to death that I'm going to get poison ivy but never have.
Greg doesn’t look like poison ivy to me but I think he was just using it to demonstrate the technique.
Yes Alex is correct. Those ones are just wild vines from thorns but often I will find poison ivy mixed in with it but I have kept at it for a while to keep it under control. But always use caution and with this technique it really keeps you out of harms way and shou;d reduce any issues that could come up.

Ironically I am one of the 25% of people that have no reaction to poison ivy. I was exposed to a lot of it as a kid in the local woods so that may be why but it's terrible for those that are.
