There are some reviewers & youtubers like Hiro Hei for rwby who are extremely biased against RT & RWBY ( I swear, Hiro Hei would make 10min long video how rwby breathing symbolizes her hatred towards white man and straight people), and while I absolutely agree that they (RT & RWBY) deserve a lot of shit for their writing, hypocrisy and all the other things, I don't like reviews and videos that shit on something just for the sake of shitting, without explaining why this particular thing is dumb/bad, or explaining it really poorly. That's why I love Vex videos, because he's explaining WHY RT writing & decisions sucks ass 99% of times now, and often provides much better and not harder to do (from the animating & possible cost for company perspective, animation even 3d is not cheap) alternative. I don't know if I'll watch next season of RWBY (probably not, because giving them views is good for them even if you watch it just to learn how to NOT write characters and plot), but if Vex will cover it in his videos I'll tune in.
I just realized. Cider blew alot of people up, who then fell into the void that team RWBY also fell into. meaning wherever they end up, there should also be some random background characters. Who wants to bet the random people don't show up, so they all died, but team RWBY is just fine.
Also, all Penny or anyone needed to do, was throw the relic, into the void. Then either Cinder has to go after it (leaving the conflict and hopefully removing her character) or at least it's gone and Salem has literally lost.
Not only am I taking that bet (in that the people die but Team RWBY, Jaune, Neo, and the dead Penny body survive), but I’m betting we figure that out in the first five minutes of the first chapter of Volume 9.

Also Pietro and Maria become evil, Pietro because those idiots got his daughter killed for the umpteenth time, Maria for no reason whatsoever. They are the main villains of Vol 9 with Salem doing absolutely nothing, and then in the final 3 episodes Cinder becomes the main villain again and still ends up surviving the season.

I just hope that Ironwood is 100% dead. There is no way in hell to write him a redemption arc when him being a villian in the first place was just random and senseless. He was the shittiest “villain” in the entire show, seeing how he was never supposed to end up a Villain. It’s tragic to say the least, they wrote him in a way that made him very compelling. If Vol 8 really was planned, which i doubt.. They should have changed aspects of Vol 8 they don’t involve Ironwood being a Villain. Because it does. Not. Make. SENSE. Lets be honest Vol 8 is basically Vol 7 Pt.2, so it drags down Vol 7 imo.
I am having second thoughts about his death. Yeah it looks bad. But RWBY has been shown to not always abide by the 'no body no death' rule of thumb. Plus the volume had this quasi build up of a Qrow Ironwood confrontation. I feel like Qrow may still have a date with Ironwood. Could be wrong. If Ironwood is indeed dead then they had all this obsession built up for Qrow all for nothing.

Facts. She is weak, she is stupid, and she isn't even liked as a character (Micah Bell was liked as a character, she is just a perpetual nuisance) and furthermore, is practically irrelevant. The 5 rules of writing RWBY 1. All characters are only as smart as the plot allows. 2. Only the current volume is canon. 3. Shipping > character development 4. There's no power scaling 5. If any character comes to disagree with team RWBY they will be demonized, flanderizied and humiliated, especially if male (ex. Adam).
It's Fucking tragic how true all of this is, ESPECIALLY point 5. Like, if anyone even slightly objects to what the main four say, they're character is assassinated more brutally than Stannis Baratheon.

Euron went from a dark mastermind with a drug/vision/magic? induced god complex that used extremely ruthless methods to achieve his goals into a sex crazed maniac whose only goal was to fuck Cersei. At least ironwood kept doing everything he could to try to keep atlas safe, there is still a bit of the original character inside of the volume 8 character. While there is none of the original Euron in the GoT TV show.
I totally agree with you on the idiom thing. Sure, you can say, "why would she say that, it's so clearly gonna mess it up," but most people don't realize how often we use idioms without even thinking, like a natural reflex. That comes with the basic concept of language, and using it for your entire life. So, that's a great avenue for a plot point, unknowingly messing it up because you never considered how such a small thing could be taken literally. THAT is good writing! WHY ARE THEY SO SHIT AT IT EVERY OTHER TIME?!?!?!

The biggest stupid for the sake of the plot is Ruby can't just use her eyes to light Cinder up, so many events like Yang and all of her friends assumed to be dying would cause her silver eyes to explode like how she watched Pyrrah dying but they don't. This entire final fight was me saying "RUBY, WHY AREN'T YOU USING YOUR SILVER EYES!?"
Yep, that is the worst offender, in volume 7 ruby instantly defeated cinder, yet in a ln episode long fight against cinder, she only tried using silver eyes when she was hanging from the edge of a platform, after all of her friends and countless civilians "died"
If Cinder can make glass objects with her powers why doesn't she just make something to reflect Ruby's Silver Eyes to make it harder to suffer defeat from it? So that way it wouldn't be insta-win and Ruby would have to strategize on when to use it or get Cinder's guard down somehow. Then Ruby doesn't have to "forget" she has the ability every time she's in a crucial battle against Cinder.
Yep and this muddies Cinder's victory. I remembered reading the Shibuya Incident Arc from JJK and was amazed at just how much Geto had taken into account when fighting Gojo. Now this will be a little bit spoilery so her is a fair warning. Gojo effectively is the most powerful character in the series however Geto managed to use multiple clever exploits which built upon earlier scenes in the manga to nullify Gojo's techniques. Gojo's red, blue and hollow purple techniques are extremely strong but at the same time destructive. In Gojo vs Jogo he annihilated a whole forrest just using Red, and in Gojo vs Toshi he eradicated a street using Blue. So what happens when there's a crowd of people in the middle of their fight? Gojo can't use his techniques. His domain expansion takes up space which we saw in Gojo vs Jogo and Geto had set up a curtain. This means that if Gojo tried to eliminate his opponents with Infinite Void he could possibly sandwich the civilians in the area between the two barriers therefore crushing them. They also used Hanami's domain amplification which allowed the group of cursed spirits to land attacks on Gojo. We saw that in Gojo vs Toshi, things which nullified cursed techniques like the Inverted spear of Heaven can pierce through his barrier making him effectively helpless. Notice the difference? Gojo didn't forget any of his techniques nor did the villains do stupid shit that would mess with their plans. They put Gojo in a situation where he could win but would need to compromise his morals to do so. Cinder never takes hostages, she never threatens Ruby she doesn't have any work around the silver eyes because of how strong they have become. Beforehand a weakness was that they required time to startup so if they made Cinder a hyper-rushdown fighter that could've been believable... But then volume 7 came around and she used her silver eyes instantly.... God damnit. Not to mention the silver eyes don't even hurt civilians so literally nothing stops her from using it. The silver eyes have no weakness or exploit because they have been written so inconsistently that depending on if the plot demands it she can shoot silver eye beams from her anus. Probably the best solution would just be to defeat Ruby before she notices BUT THEY DON'T DO THAT
Heck, Winter could've even used her semblance to create a flock of birds to catch anyone who falls. Weiss could've summoned her bee grimm, they literally have the power of flight on their side and still couldn't catch anyone.
I think that's why the show went out of it's way to show both Schnees lost their aura, but when winter becomes the maiden, she starts summoning again, so who knows what the rules are honestly
@@diverman467 I was under the impression Aura & Semblance were separate from the maiden power. Amber had her Aura broken but still had maiden power. But she was taken down because she had no Aura. I guess they bent the rules of lore a little to make the scene work. Wouldn't be the first time.

Am I really supposed to believe that Nora, Emerald, Oscar, and aura-less Ren held off an army of Grimm in a sandstorm all by themselves? When Winter came through that portal there should have been corpses everywhere.

Team RWBY’s plan has probably one of the hugest backlash: where will these people live now? It’s a new environment for them plus they aren’t exactly dressed for such an environment either because yeah it did happen so suddenly...But at the end of the day-these bunch of kids made things worse when came in to fix things.
So many people knew about Cinder. Heck Ironwood told Winter that Cinder got Watts out of prison and that was after Cinder fought against Penny. Literally everyone knew about Cinder but forgot.
It is interesting to note that Cinder showed absolutely No fear in the face of Ruby's Silver Eyes this time. It's like she read the script beforehand and knew Ruby was not going to flash her. Silver Eyes made stupid for plot.
You mean her Mangekyo Sharingan didn't turn on again? Even when they're trying to bring in tension, it's just so dumb. There's no one but Grimm that can be affected by it so she's free to use it in crowded places if they aren't Grimm. There's this fanfiction that actually made Ruby a side character called "Relic of the Future". That was years ago before any of her mistakes happened in canon. It's almost like the author knew that Ruby was going to be this bad of a leader that she'd practically did everything of Salem's work for her. It's astounding.
So team RWBY destroyed Atlas and Mantle. On top of that they sent thousands of refugees to one of the harshest environments in remnant. Are we sure Salem is the real villain.

Cinder (and Salem's forces) being there is PRECISELY what drove Ironwood insane, is exactly why he opposed the mass evacuation to Atlas. They forgot about it and faced exactly what he feared. And lost, like he tried to avoid.
One thing that really bothered me in this Volume was Hazel being able to hold Salem still while Oscar powered up his cane. Just two Volumes ago, in the lamp flashback, we saw Salem twist a Nevermore (or some similar type of Grimm) up like a pretzel and crush it into a ball with her magic. As such, I wonder why she didn't just do that to Hazel when he grabbed her. All she had to do was telekinetically fold his arms and legs around his back, break them, and tie them into a knot so that he couldn't stop her from stopping Oscar. If she had done that, she wouldn't have lost the whale and may have recaptured Oscar. And if the whale needs to be destroyed for the plot to advance, there's still that massive bomb that can apparently do the job. There's no need for a Deus Ex Machina cane. Oh, wait, the bomb needed to still exist so that Ironwood could keep going postal and try to kill everyone. That's why Salem couldn't win that fight. That, to me, is a prime example of a character being "stupid for the sake of the plot".
More proof of how bad Salem is, a supposed demi god, immortal witch Queen can't stop a couple of kids and one of her own subordinates. Despite the showing telling us ad nauseam how "There is no beating Salem". One of the worse things when it come to any power system is when the writers forget a characters abilities, especially a hax or OP one and never bother to explain why they're not using it.
Hazel needed to die because the writing theme of RWBY would not allow him to actively work along side the heroes after flipping. (Too much toxic male there.) He would also upstage the the heroes. Neutering him like Qrow would not have worked either. He would not be Hazel anymore. So he had to go. At least they had him go out in a blaze of glory, literally!
Hazel bear hugging an immortal who is supposedly demigod levels of strong is the equivalent to a beaten down Goku holding down Raditz with a full nelson despite Raditz dominating him and Piccolo at the same time
I know I'm reaching here, but MAYBE Salem doing that to that Nevermore had something to do with her power over the Grimm. I don't remember her using telekinesis on a person or object before. Either way, she shouldn't have been beaten the way she was.

I recently discovered the part of the RWBY fandom that eats this all up. Believe me, if dumbing down characters for the sake of the plot is a gamble then it's an extremely safe one with this fandom.
I must admit to my chagrin I had been part of such a fan group, though to be fair I didn't realize it immediately. In fact, I was asked to help create and run an RWBY rpg. Shortly after inception, it brought the attention of a gender-studies, social justice warrior who soon became the center of everything, including the devotion of my supposed co-creator. I was expelled after a year for 'being toxic.' Do I really need to say more?
It makes sense that if you got a group of people who never critique and eat up everything you do, why do you need to try? RWBY had all the ingredients for an amazing meal, but now it's just mixed into a slop and fed to passive-experiencing fans.

Speaking of honesty, I have to be honest and admit before long I saw all of this coming to a head, but I did my best to convince myself that the other two admin really meant it when everyone would be treated equally, myself included. I swallowed the lies, plain and simple. As for why I joined, 1) the RPG started up at the very beginning of Season Four, 2) despite its flaws I found it was an engaging story, and 3) I've been a GM for over 30 years. I've even been paid a few times to run an RPG at a convention. 4) I only signed up to be a player, but after 24 hours of being there, the founder asked me to be a partner with him and run the place. The RPG was barely two days old. It was hard to say no. There's more details. The full story is painful and disgusting, though you pretty much know it already. In the end, I was a fool to believe.

Well I heard that after his death they completely pushed and ignored his wife and another person he was close with that would have continued Monty's original vision for RWBY, so they can do their own thing.

Given how they always panders to the fans (mostly on ships) forgetting for example enitre volume of Sun fixing Blake awful character & her problems, just because most vocal (and toxic) part of community demands gayyyyy, I'd bet they will somehow revive her again, possibly with some other relic. If not with relic, then with Pietro giving rest of his Aura to make another Penny (who would have all the memories because lack of logic never stopped them before, so it won't now).
I promise you Penny will come back a 3rd time lol. We've learned that there is a way to give her a human body.. I'm positive Pietro would have little issue giving away what little life he has so he daughter can live a full one... wow that actually sounds endearing.

(There's alot but I was focusing on the last few chapters.) - Ruby not using Silver Eyes on Cinder, even though she has never failed to flash Cinder on the spot in the past. - Weiss not using her glyphs to save Yang (Even though she used them to save Penny and hinder Cinder.) - Ruby forgetting her semblance and not saving Yang. - Yang forgetting she has two dust canons for arms but decides to throw her body at Neo. - Neo forgetting to user her semblance to get out of the ledge hanging jam. Even with Ruby hanging on to her legs. (Oscar did the same thing in 7x13 and she got out of that.) - Penny forgetting to use Lasers (again) for CvP 3. Just like in CvP 1. She used Maiden powers to recreate everything else except a Laser like equivalent. She didn't even shoot Ice!. - Neo make a deal with Cinder....... Again! Feel free to counter or add to this list.
I got a few in regards to Salem as a whole this Vol -Salem not attack Atlas and Mantle immediately at the start of the vol, letting her enemies prepare for her arrival, she has an endless army that doesn't need to sleep or eat. All her lieutenants are present minus who she wants to free Watts, there is no excuse not to just attack. -Salem not using the whale to fly above Atlas and just spray grimm goo on top of the whole city. -Salem is said to be so powerful yet she cant maim or seriously injure a couple of kids. -Salem not using her magic to decimate the Atlas military outside of the wall, or creating new types of grimm instead she plays at being the Major from Hellsing. -Salem has telekinesis using it to twist and crush a nevermore, why didn't she use it on Hazel? -Further on that same fight we later see Salem can make herself intangible and fly, why didn't she turn herself into smoke to escape Hazel's bear hug? -last thing on Salem, her somehow knowing where the vault is located but she decided to park the whale on Atlas' front yard. These are for the last 4 eps -Atlas military and Grimm keeps vanishing, are they still fighting or not, where are the airships and airborne Grimm? -Ironwood is said to be paranoid so when waiting for Penny, where are the foot soldiers or paladin mechs? -Emerald not telling the group anything useful or staying to help fight Cinder and Neo -Cinder not blasting Weiss and Blake off the edge who are just sitting there grieving for Yang after she fell -Blake and Penny allowing Cinder to sneak up on Ruby. -Cinder not blasting Weiss off the edge with maiden magic after she stabs Penny. -The Happy Huntress and Nora not helping in fighting Cinder and Neo. Penny not giving the relic to anyone while she fights Cinder. -Penny forgetting she has magic, can make a blizzard or any elemental attack.
I think the writers are Cinder simps. There is no other explanation for what happens here. Think about it, she still acts all smug and better than everyone else, she never changes her personality despite going through many attempts of character arc, everyone acts like a complete idiot to make her life infinitely easier. It is just ridiculous at this point.
I think they might literally be simps for Jessica Nigri. It's inexplainable otherwise how someone like her ever played more than a guest role and how this character has been on life support for five volumes and counting.
Female characters (good or bad) will always have much stronger plot armor in this show than their male counterparts. 6 out of 16 male characters died this volume. While only 1 out of 20 female characters did. And that one was killed by a male character. Male characters really get the short end of the stick in RWBY.
People will still claim either Cinder or Salem as the final villain but the true final boss is Team RWBY themselves. They'll sink a kingdom, have the refugees dumped in a danger pit and still have the audacity to claim Ozpin is a bad guy.
Man, the way the narrative constantly forgets what characters are and arent aware of creates the most infuriating inconsistency when watching, best summarized by your montage of all the obvious facts the team knew and already acknowledged with the clip of ruby saying "lets hope we accounted for everything" as it zoomed in on Cinder in between each instance provided.

There is a world of difference between a character making a mistake which happens to further the plot and a character being made stupid in service of moving the plot in a specific direction.
Somehow ,Cinder has unlimited aura, her aura didn't even flicker or broke. She also very good at fighting, without wasting time gloating, blowing up people in time.
Yeah, that was pretty silly. She trashed Everybody, including a Maiden with out breaking a sweat. Cinder Never got more powerful, new training, or even better intelligence. She is one of the few consistent elements in this show. She never changes. She is made better or worse by making her opponents better or worse in skill, power and intelligence. As the plot calls for it. Cinder Looses = Opponents stuck to their game, use their abilities and capabilities, work intelligently. Cinder Wins = Opponents do all the wrong things, forget to use their abilities and capabilities, and are just plain stupid.

Another thing is how everyone seemingly forgot about the relic. When Oscar and Co. were leaving the whale battlefield, none of them realized that they left the relic behind. Granted none of them were aware that Neo stole it again by that point, but as far as they knew they should have known that they left the relic behind. During their time walking through the tunnels when everything was cooling down, you would think one of them [especially Oscar or Ozpin] would realize they were missing something and go, *"(gasp) Shit! The lamp!"* during their waltz.
Wasn't the lamp still in the 'lamp room' where Neo was hiding and the reason Salem was asking them about it was because she stole it? And from what it looked like at the end of the episode they were near the exit/mouth. Nowhere near Neo who already took it.

You know how they could've done that? Have cinder kill Qrow. Just hear me out. He has magic right? Not a lot, but he has some. Have cinder ask the lamp "where else can I get magic?" Or "is there anyone who isn't a maiden I can steal powers from?" And it shows Qrow. The villans go and gang up on him, cinder ganks his magic and gets a boost. Then when she fights the main characters, her being a bit stronger makes a bit more sense, and someone actually dies at the hands of the villans. Qrow is basically usless anyways. Might as well have him serve a purpose.
It’s amazing how Team RWBY did everything Ironwood was trying so hard to prevent... giving Salem the relic, almost losing the Winter maiden... AGAIN, destroying Altas (and Mantle) and placing the people of Atlas in grave danger at the hands of the Grimm, yet Ironwood is somehow the villain for trying to protect the citizens under his care... Congrats RWBY, you had to make your best character literally the worst just to justify your own BS, and in the end Ironwood’s plan was still a better than theirs.
Ironwood was considered the villain because he actively chose to abandon and then threaten the people of mantle. You know, the citizens under his care. Yeah Team RWBY fucked up, but that doesn't mean James is doing a good thing or even the best choice.
@@JC4Stuffs Yes he did abandon Mantle, however, Atlas didn’t have the man power to defend both Altas and Mantle simultaneously and James knew it. Between the civil uproar taking place where civilians were actively attacking Altas’s troops, and the fact that the Grimm had actively punched through Mantles defenses and were invading the entire city, James cut his losses and realized he couldn’t defend both cities at once. You are telling me that if you were in his shoes that you wouldn’t make the same call? You want to tell me you would try to split your forces knowing that you didn’t have enough to protect both cities at once? It was a logically sound decision, it just seems evil because the writers decided that James needed his personality to have a complete 180 shift into a cartoonishly mustache twirling villain to justify their writing.
@@normanmerrick9493 I honestly don't know what choice I would make in James' shoes, everyone reacts differently under pressure. But the show also makes one thing pretty explicit, Ironwood is not making his decisions based on pure facts and logic but upon paranoia. And that's not good, he turns into a tyrant who becomes so single-minded and focused that he loses any flexibility that might actually be off benefit. Ironwood is no longer a person who should be trusted with power, just look at how he executes a civilian leader for just questioning him, or how he somehow believes that he can trust Watts not to do something to backstab him, or how he decides to bomb a civilian population because he wants team RWBY to give up Penny. That's all very problematic.

You hit so many nails on the head. Even if they were planning on Penny dying, all logic would say to have Jaune take the relic to Vacuo. He'd be there to aid Ren and the relic would be secured. And through all of this, I still don't understand why Cinder was so enhanced. The fight went on so long that auras were breaking and fighters were fatigued, but Cinder was fresh the entire time. If Maiden powers were the cause then why was Penny utterly useless in this fight compared to the last time she fought Cinder?

Why didn't they drop everyone onto Shade's front yard? You want to get everyone into the safest location as possible. I think the huntsmen academy with tons of Huntsmen around would be pretty safe. Ruby and Penny should be glued together. They are both targets but their powers protect each other. Skilled huntsmen can't touch Penny and Cinder can't deal with silver eyes. I think they should have kept Penny and Ruby in the portal room and send Blake and/or Oscar with the staff to Shade. Shade and possibly the Summer Maiden should be able to protect the relic and get it into the Vault asap. Penny, Ruby, and whoever else can guard the portal room against Cinder and Neo. Those 2 are probably the only hope for the worst case scenario Salem entering the portal room. I don't understand how Cinder and Neo won through 6 fighters. 4 are on par/as good as the ace ops, one of which is a silver eyed warrior and the other two are atlas's best fighters turned into maidens.
Yeah I noticed there were a million ways to save people - time dilation - glyphs - Ruby’s speed - Momentum from Yang’s guns - a flying Grimm summon by Weiss - Winter flying to save Jaune
The whole time I saw Yang fall I was like “ Ruby...Weiss...either of you...DO SOMETHING, ANYTHING! “ I seriously couldn’t stop thinking about how two people who could fly/levitate couldn’t save their teammate.
It's even worse when you remember in the finale, Blake launched herself to catch Ruby and only failed because Cinder burned her weapon, Weiss also saved Penny using queen lancer and Ruby saved herself and caught Neo off guard using her semblance. But nobody tried to save Yang when literally each and every one of her teammates has a semblance that can do so. Somehow they managed to beat the Ace-Ops by "being in the right headspace". LOL

I love how Tyrian, Cinder, Emerald, Watts and Mercury just walk in any city with nobody noticed, i mean they are the reason than beacon falls, there a wanted poster of them or something like that?.
I think Jaune and Emerald probably should have been swapped. It would have completed Emerald's character arc for the Volume, and given her new potential next Volume. Emerald not fighting Cinder means that she hasn't proven that her loyalty to Cinder isn't still controlling her. The show already established Emerald never had any loyalty to Salem. She used her loyalty to Cinder as justification for her wrongdoings, so closing her redemption arc requires that she must face Cinder at some point. It's like how Zuko had to confront his father before leaving the Fire Nation to join the Avatar. Zuko's worst actions were driven by a desire to prove himself to his father because he was made to believe that was the only way he could have his Honor Restored, and confronting his father allowed him to prove that he finally rejected his father's influence and that he would no longer hold any power of him. Emerald hasn't had such an irreversible character moment that genuinely proves that she has changed. She could very easily end up serving Cinder again if Salem is defeated somehow, or manipulated by Cinder into betraying everyone like Azula did to Zuko in Book 2. Emerald's arc is still in flux, and doesn't offer anything stable because she's only joining the protagonists because that is currently what's in her best interests, and it doesn't directly conflict with her loyalty to Cinder yet. She hasn't even had a line that suggests that she wouldn't be behaving differently if Salem weren't trying to kill everyone. The arc feels more like play-dough than a fleshed out storyline, and that makes it impossible for me to trust her when her redemption arc feels incomplete. I'm going to be distrustful of Emerald until either Cinder dies, or Emerald fight Cinder, and they missed their earliest opportunity to change that. Emerald has already interact with Penny more in this Volume than Jaune has since Penny first appeared. In addition to that, Emerald was also partly responsible for Penny dying the first time. Having Emerald not want to kill Penny a second time would both show growth, as she is now seen feeling reluctance and remorse while doing something she previously did without hesitation. It also further proves that Emerald is now doing something to deliberately sabotage Cinder's goals, something which she previously tried to help Cinder do in the same Volume. It would cement that Emerald is not blindly obeying Cinder's orders anymore, and that she will go beyond trying to escape Salem out of self-preservation. Without a moment like this, how am I supposed to trust that Emerald isn't going to just leave everyone when the dust settles?
I've been wanting the idea of Emerald betraying the "heroes" when Cinder attacks them in which Emerald attacks Penny and Winter and gets the relics making Ruby and co shocked to learn that Emerald never did change and Emerald tells them in a sick mocking tone that she was never on her side and was just setting a trap for them that even Cinder didn't knew about and this causes Cinder to view that Emerald is a good minion and Ruby and co gets very P about and yells Emerald that she lied to them while Emerald doesn't give a damn
I'm actually so pissed of they made it so Jaune, YET AGAIN, get's all the interesting screentime. The bullying arc in Volume 1, his romance in Volume 2 and 3, grieving for SO LONG in Volume 4, 5 and 6 (that damn statue and crying fit at Cinder), killing a major character like Penny that will lead to some interesting interactions and characters development I bet, AND falling into the interesting cool island with the 4 "main characters??? He might as well be the main character.
Just tell yourself this: he won't end up with anyone in Team RWBY. Say it with me now: Jaune won't end up with any one in Team RWBY. Neo is there to make sure of that by being his Vol 9 love interest

Isn't this what happened with Game of Thrones? They made all of the smart characters into idiots so that a specific plot could happen? I mean props to them for making the same mistakes as a big-budget world renowned TV show. Proving that it doesn't matter how much budget you have. Bad writing can mess up any piece of media.
I agree that the volume 8 finale could of been better, especially because the writers decided to kill Penny *again*. I'm not even a Penny fan and I found it disappointing.
I thought it was obvious (to me) when she popped up in 7x1, that she was brought back (especially with memories and personality intact) just to kill her off again in some big dramatic moment, especially for Ruby. My prediction went from 95% sure to 100% sure as soon as she became a maiden. I guess we'll have to wait for V9 to get Ruby's reaction.

I liked Jaune’s character, but after this volume it’s hard not to notice how Miles seems to take steps to bend the plot so his character is just as important and active as team RWBY. The show may as well be called JRWBY! Seriously if Jaune had gone through the portal Ruby could have been forced to kill Penny. It could have been a huge emotional and developing moment for the MAIN character. But no, Ruby is literally thrown off stage so Jaune can shine!
To be fair Ruby would not have done it, she’s not mature enough to make a decision like that properly or before Cinder comes. She always believes there’s another way, rather than facing reality at it’s face. Though yes her killing Penny would be her finally accepting responsibility for her actions, because dividing her team from Ironwood lead to this situation.
You're not wrong, dude. I'll admit, I like Jaune's character a lot. But... I've gotten real tired of that blond knight always stealing the spotlight. This is one of the many reasons why I fell willingly lept off the RWBY-Wagon.
Or just have Jaune carry the injured Penny to the portal and heal her then. I doubt the five fingered stab was enough to kill her. Why would Cinder want to kill her when she knows full well the powers will go to a random person if she does that? Besides when Maidens transfer the powers or get them stolen, they die either way. They're bound to the powers like a Red Lantern power ring. The problem is Penny overreacted to the pain and gave up too easily.
Let's not forget Neo being stupid enough to trust Cinder again. She spends 3 volumes being carted around and having the credit for her actions stolen by Cinder and still decides to trust her because Cinder says sorry.
You figured Roman would have taught her better OR better yet, Neo would have been prepared due to how awful Cinder was to Roman.ie. Threatening to kill him and burn him alive if he failed. But nope, Neo is only a fanservice character, thus her emotional attachment to Roman only comes up when it is needed instead of being one of her core character traits.
Not even mad at Cinder. Like Neo was gonna betray her anyways. Honestly If I was Cinder I would have gotten rid of her too lol. I definitely wouldn't trust Neo from her perspective. Critter described it best "how dare you betray me before I betrayed you!"

Getting rid of her there made perfect sense.. Cinder unfortunately didn't have the script and wasn't told that falling down into the void actually DOESN'T mean death if you're a main character. Salem: Flies all the way to Atlas, doesn't do anything when she gets there. If she was just going to use grimm, she could've sent them from the comfort of her castle.
all other witches from other stories were more of a threat than she was even if they had dumb defeats like being pushed to an fiery oven by a little girl or being dissolve by water like ink
I know this is off topic, but I just wanna say that watts was my favorite in rwby... His back story was cliche, but worked for his character He was 3 dimensional He had a good fight scene And being a hacker in a world made up of 70% technology made him threatening. So yeah, 7/10 (yes,my most favorite villain in rwby gets a 7 out of 10)
The fall of Beacon itself wasn't the problem. It was both how it was done AND where they went after that. Ever since then it feels like the plot was written by people suffering from depression.
@@tdninternet9916 I think they should held off on the fall of be in and introducing too many new character for a whole. Let us slowly learn about their world with the team. Let’s the other side characters get a little more interaction and bonding moments with the team. That way we can actually relive them when they all say they are friends. Let Ruby have an arch where she decides she not read for leadership for a while and stand down. Because she’s not ready for it. Then when Beacon fell we would have had a greater attachment to the school and other characters and a better understanding of the world and how the fall affects it.

Heck, they were only at Beacon for like 2 Semesters, meaning they hadn't even properly graduated first year. It's even better because Luffy and his crew often get their asses handed to them when they first encounter an enemy and often end up surviving by the skin of their teeth.eg. Luffy vs Crocodile. Luffy faced him THREE TIMES and nearly died in the two encounters and only managed to beat Crocodile when Luffy knew all his weaknesses and isolated him from the desert where his powers were at their peak.
I was more so referring to the fact that the Straw Hats as a collective aren’t particularly bright and tend to rush head first into conflict, yet even they do strategy better than team RWBY.
Honestly, people being dumb is not that abnormal. People make mistake, we aren't perfect, blah blah blah. The real issue is how often it happens... ALMOST EVERY TIME. There are four members of team RWBY. What's the point in having four members if they all smile and say "sure lets go with that" when making a plan? Does nobody pay attention? My personal issue isn't that they get stupid for the sake of the plot. My issue is that they all happen to get stupid at the same time.

@@thomasraines1396 I know but many things dont make sense. She could have won, she could have asked the staff how to stop salem and much more. The first season was amazing but it gets worse with each season.
If Cinder can make glass objects with her powers why doesn't she just make something to reflect Ruby's Silver Eyes to make it harder to suffer defeat from it? So that way it wouldn't be insta-win and Ruby would have to strategize on when to use it or get Cinder's guard down. Then Ruby doesn't have to "forget" she has the ability every time she's in a crucial battle against Cinder.
So many of these characters have Semblances that would make them super OP if they only knew how to use them properly. Ruby could materialize inside of things and explode them, Glynda could crush people's brains, Marrow could actually use his Semblance at all, so forth... it's really annoying how they don't use them correctly.
"Plot induced stupidity" is a better way of putting it. I've felt that since volume four we've had a lot of plot induced lack of competence in battle. Biggest offender lately being Penny. In volume three Penny held her own and I think even got a hit on Pyrrha in their arena match before she got quartered. Pyrrha almost beat Cinder one-on-one. Penny is now super-charged with maiden powers. Cinder hasn't gotten any stronger since that vol. 3 fight (arguably she's weaker since the grimm arm has no aura). And yet Penny is tossed around like all of her combat readiness was just forgotten, just cuz it works for the plot for Cinder to incapacitate her. And don't you dare argue it's cuz she's not used to being human. Nothing she's done since returning in vol. 7 has shown even a trace of her previous competence. Although we haven't seen a character power showcase like Penny's swords debut since the early volumes, so maybe the animators just don't put the time into the work like they used to to make the action sequences believable. Maybe if we saw Penny holding her own for at least a little bit before getting utterly wasted I'd believe it. Maybe if I'd seen Vernal actually showcasing any skill at all I'd believe she could handle Weiss in the battle of Haven. It's like they only have budget for one really good action sequence per volume these days. V4 got Qrow vs Tyrian, V5 got Yang vs Branwen Thugs, V6 got... uh... hm. Can't think of one... Team vs Giant Mech was okay. V7 had Winter and Penny vs Cinder and that was pretty great and gave me hope for at least the fight scenes again, even tho Penny was kinda tossed around. Which apparently is the norm now, which is absolutely tragic since in Vol. 1-3 she was an absolute powerhouse instead of sort of backup. And this season she was mostly somewhere between macguffin and damsel in distress. At least Neo's power level is consistent. She hasn't lost a fight yet. Oh wait.
It will either be swept under the rug or "Magically Resolved" to make our "Heroes" look good, despite the fact that they're practically a roving band of terrorists that destroyed an entire Kingdom.
Why not move everyone to Atlas, then fly Atlas to another city?? Edit: For real though, they don't know if Salem already leveled Vacuo. Sure, flying there in Atlas would be time-consuming, and they would still have to deal with the Grimm issue. Still, better idea that just dropping people in the middle of a desert.

@@JarenLemon Yeah, it's not a GREAT parallel. All that's the same is the event of being covered with water. It's a parallel in name only. They did the same thing with their Cowardly Lion parallel. All they did was make his story end sadly instead of triumphantly. The Lion lost his courage. However, we don't see WHY Leonardo lost his courage, not even the moment he lost it. He already lost courage when we first see him. We don't get that journey. The parallel, the twist you could say, is shallow---we only know it's an interesting twist of character because of the source material. We don't know RWBY's version of this character, because we don't see Leonardo's journey. The story banks solely on you knowing the Cowardly Lion from Wizard of Oz. Same with the Tin Man "losing his heart". I think it was in Eruptionfang's video about the unbelievability of Ironwood's turn, but Ironwood's behavior in Volume 8 seemed more like he lost his mind rather than his heart. And for most of Vol 8 when he was fighting a battle, overseeing the creation of a tactical nuke, which appears would have worked had Winter's team been able to deploy it---his actions seemed perfectly reasonable. So even then he wasn't acting crazy, or like he didn't care (heartless), except in specific circumstances, like shooting the council member. If Ironwood was truly heartless, acting for the sake of ruthless expedience, why didn't he use Qrow as bait for Ruby, which later in the volume he admitted he didn't do because he hesitated. I can't remember what exactly he said, something about not being willing to do what had to be done. So on one hand he's ruthless, but when he has an easily exploitable weakness of the people he's after, he isn't ruthless anymore? That's more in line with the thinking of a crazy person, an inconsistent line of actions, than someone who's "lost his heart". I think the writers mixed up what it means to be "heartless" with...well, I don't even know what this is supposed to be aside from insanity. "Losing heart" also means "losing your courage"---"he's lost the heart to fight" is equivalent to giving up. "Losing heart" would look more like someone becoming apathetic. It's clear through Vol 7 - 8 than Ironwood cares a heck of a lot about a number of things. Like being betrayed. That hurt him. It hurt him in Vol 7, it hurt him in 8 with Winter at the end. He never lost his heart to fight---he fought till the very last episode. Really, the point where he lost his heart was when he didn't shoot Cinder or Salem. That's what losing heart looks like. You just don't care anymore. And according to the writers commentary for Vol 7, it was when he shot Oscar that he lost his heart (at least I think so. That's what I remember from people reading the transcript). Ironwood at least had way more development than Leonardo, but in Vol 7, the reason he wanted to leave Mantle was to save as many people as he thought he could, including saving the rest of the world by preventing Salem from getting the relic and the Winter maiden. His heart was fully intact...he cared. What the writers attempted to do with Ironwood was to flesh out that parallel of the Tin Man. We did indeed see the journey. It just wasn't a journey of a man losing his heart. Or at least not mainly his heart. Unless they decide he didn't die, and he comes back in other volumes, being actually heartless. Then I guess we did. Best parallel ever, maybe.

Vol 7 has the best character Ironwood and the most competent villains being Tyrian and Watts. and as much as i hate the context for it, the fight between Qrow, Clover and Tyrian is the best choreographed fight since vol 4. that alone puts it above vol 8 for me
Ruby walks into ironwood's office, finds out her sister when behind her back, and revealed private information to a vigilantly and, as far as she knows, had no intention of telling her. Ruby gets pissed off at yang and Blake for not even considering telling her. Now that team rwby's trust has been shot to hell, the ace ops destroy them. And just to add insult to injury, Qrow dies instead of clover. boom, in 2 simple steps, I have broken ruby rose
This sounds really good, and to think of it, I still prefer clover to die, but not tryian and qrow vs clover bullshit. Like robin causes the whole ship to go down because she was picking a fight with tryain, tryian is free and qrow joins up with clover to fight tryian. Robin is injured and cant fight because shes was too naïve. The fighting goes on but qrows bad luck gets in the way of clovers good luck and tryain knocks put qrow. Clover is on his own on fighting tryain but qrows bad luck is still there and when qrow gets up its too late. Tryian grabs qrows weapon and kill clover. When tryian escapes, clover says "wow qrow you are really a bad luck charm. But you still fought by my side as my friend" and clover dies. Qrow is broken down and robin ( still injuryed and on the ground as she did watched the whole fight) says the police are coming and instead of submitting, qroe makes his choice. He tells robin how he is a danger to anyone around him with his bad luck and he shouldnt be around Anyone anymore. Robin tries to convince him and qrow tells her " if you see ruby and yang tell her i will always love them." And when poilce arrive, qrow flys off alone.
The saddest thing in my opinion is that there was a great moment to show character growth that was wasted. Jaune's (alleged) biggest regret was his failure to save Pyrrha. So have Cinder about to kill Penny, but this time Jaune does save the redhead. Would have been a great way to show how Jaune improved in skill, all those solo nights rewatching Pyrrha's videos paying off against the one that killed her. But nope, this is RWBY so the writing will forever suck.
This is why, regardless of how terrible of writing you think it'd be, I think Pyrrha will be back in some form in V9 to interact with Jaune, since as you pointed out it is dumb for Jaune to not go through the portal, showing they wanted to set up V9 over having logic.
They also just want Jaune to do everything. Jaune is more of a main character at this point than Ruby because he does literally everything, and Oscar does the things he don't Guarantee Jaune is gonna kill Cinder in the future, because screw good arcs and rivalries for Ruby, Jaune is Cinder's rival now
@@KikiCatMeow TBH I'd be fine with Jaune killing Cinder as he has more reason to want to kill her than Ruby and so far it seems they are setting up towards him killing her, so it wouldn't exactly come out of the blue. But I agree with the rest of what you said.
Unfortunately, this is cash grab. This almost feels like it was came up with as a last minute thought. Like someone asks Miles and Carry were asked last minute and they stopped and answered with the first thing coming to mind. "Okay but how will yang fall?" The response: "Uhh Neo sneaks up behind her and Yang charges in to take the blow" Also vexed forgot to mention something: Instead of charging in to take a hit for Ruby why not...shoot her? Neo would have dodged, sure. But now Ruby is aware of what's going on, and no one falls.

@@parkermaisterra8532 Hmm, hadn't come across that arguement yet. The platform they were on seemed clear of civilians at the time. (Cinder blew them off into the void on her landing.) Plus Yang is usually pretty accurate with those gauntlets. Even if that was a valid arguement, then we end back up with the one strike by Neo taking out the tank of the team with an Adam-like strike from her umbrella poker. Which would put a strike from Neo on par with Adam's arua breaking moon slice. A striking ability Neo has never demonstrated before.
Well, just another scene made illogical just to send a message. The writers had to have their Bumblebee moment. Keep the hardcore shippers well fed. Even if it meant making other characters stupid for a second in order to have the scene play out as it did. That is one of the issues that bother me most for the show as of recent volumes. Scenes that are blatantly writen to bypass logic and reason just to pander or virtue signal. That's when it becomes bad writing.
Two more things come to mind: We see RWBY characters defy gravity with weapon recoil in the past. Yang and Ruby from volumes 1 - 5 just would have returned to solid ground by firing off their weapons repeatedly and propelling themselves with recoil. But they "kinda forgot" they did this for several volumes before the 8th? And the other: They sent the refugees to Vacuo, where they'll be regarded as useless mouths on feet. Vacuo people have an extremely Darwinian attitude. Why not send them into previously secured territory, like Mistral?

There are some reviewers & youtubers like Hiro Hei for rwby who are extremely biased against RT & RWBY ( I swear, Hiro Hei would make 10min long video how rwby breathing symbolizes her hatred towards white man and straight people), and while I absolutely agree that they (RT & RWBY) deserve a lot of shit for their writing, hypocrisy and all the other things, I don't like reviews and videos that shit on something just for the sake of shitting, without explaining why this particular thing is dumb/bad, or explaining it really poorly.
That's why I love Vex videos, because he's explaining WHY RT writing & decisions sucks ass 99% of times now, and often provides much better and not harder to do (from the animating & possible cost for company perspective, animation even 3d is not cheap) alternative.
I don't know if I'll watch next season of RWBY (probably not, because giving them views is good for them even if you watch it just to learn how to NOT write characters and plot), but if Vex will cover it in his videos I'll tune in.

I just realized. Cider blew alot of people up, who then fell into the void that team RWBY also fell into. meaning wherever they end up, there should also be some random background characters. Who wants to bet the random people don't show up, so they all died, but team RWBY is just fine.
Also, all Penny or anyone needed to do, was throw the relic, into the void. Then either Cinder has to go after it (leaving the conflict and hopefully removing her character) or at least it's gone and Salem has literally lost.

Sure, you can say, "why would she say that, it's so clearly gonna mess it up," but most people don't realize how often we use idioms without even thinking, like a natural reflex. That comes with the basic concept of language, and using it for your entire life. So, that's a great avenue for a plot point, unknowingly messing it up because you never considered how such a small thing could be taken literally. THAT is good writing! The biggest stupid for the sake of the plot is Ruby can't just use her eyes to light Cinder up, so many events like Yang and all of her friends assumed to be dying would cause her silver eyes to explode like how she watched Pyrrah dying but they don't. This entire final fight was me saying "RUBY, WHY AREN'T YOU USING YOUR SILVER EYES!?"
Yep, that is the worst offender, in volume 7 ruby instantly defeated cinder, yet in a ln episode long fight against cinder, she only tried using silver eyes when she was hanging from the edge of a platform, after all of her friends and countless civilians "died"
If Cinder can make glass objects with her powers why doesn't she just make something to reflect Ruby's Silver Eyes to make it harder to suffer defeat from it? So that way it wouldn't be insta-win and Ruby would have to strategize on when to use it or get Cinder's guard down somehow. Then Ruby doesn't have to "forget" she has the ability every time she's in a crucial battle against Cinder.

I remembered reading the Shibuya Incident Arc from JJK and was amazed at just how much Geto had taken into account when fighting Gojo. Now this will be a little bit spoilery so her is a fair warning.
Gojo effectively is the most powerful character in the series however Geto managed to use multiple clever exploits which built upon earlier scenes in the manga to nullify Gojo's techniques.
Gojo's red, blue and hollow purple techniques are extremely strong but at the same time destructive. In Gojo vs Jogo he annihilated a whole forrest just using Red, and in Gojo vs Toshi he eradicated a street using Blue. So what happens when there's a crowd of people in the middle of their fight? Gojo can't use his techniques. His domain expansion takes up space which we saw in Gojo vs Jogo and Geto had set up a curtain. This means that if Gojo tried to eliminate his opponents with Infinite Void he could possibly sandwich the civilians in the area between the two barriers therefore crushing them.
They also used Hanami's domain amplification which allowed the group of cursed spirits to land attacks on Gojo. We saw that in Gojo vs Toshi, things which nullified cursed techniques like the Inverted spear of Heaven can pierce through his barrier making him effectively helpless.
Notice the difference? Gojo didn't forget any of his techniques nor did the villains do stupid shit that would mess with their plans. They put Gojo in a situation where he could win but would need to compromise his morals to do so. Cinder never takes hostages, she never threatens Ruby she doesn't have any work around the silver eyes because of how strong they have become.
Beforehand a weakness was that they required time to startup so if they made Cinder a hyper-rushdown fighter that could've been believable... But then volume 7 came around and she used her silver eyes instantly.... God damnit. Not to mention the silver eyes don't even hurt civilians so literally nothing stops her from using it.
The silver eyes have no weakness or exploit because they have been written so inconsistently that depending on if the plot demands it she can shoot silver eye beams from her anus. Probably the best solution would just be to defeat Ruby before she notices BUT THEY DON'T DO THAT

Heck, Winter could've even used her semblance to create a flock of birds to catch anyone who falls. Weiss could've summoned her bee grimm, they literally have the power of flight on their side and still couldn't catch anyone.

Weiss also have the power to create solid objects with Dust manipulation. So walls and floor were also an option

There's this fanfiction that actually made Ruby a side character called "Relic of the Future". That was years ago before any of her mistakes happened in canon. It's almost like the author knew that Ruby was going to be this bad of a leader that she'd practically did everything of Salem's work for her. It's astounding.
So team RWBY destroyed Atlas and Mantle. On top of that they sent thousands of refugees to one of the harshest environments in remnant. Are we sure Salem is the real villain.

One thing that really bothered me in this Volume was Hazel being able to hold Salem still while Oscar powered up his cane. Just two Volumes ago, in the lamp flashback, we saw Salem twist a Nevermore (or some similar type of Grimm) up like a pretzel and crush it into a ball with her magic. As such, I wonder why she didn't just do that to Hazel when he grabbed her. All she had to do was telekinetically fold his arms and legs around his back, break them, and tie them into a knot so that he couldn't stop her from stopping Oscar. If she had done that, she wouldn't have lost the whale and may have recaptured Oscar. And if the whale needs to be destroyed for the plot to advance, there's still that massive bomb that can apparently do the job. There's no need for a Deus Ex Machina cane. Oh, wait, the bomb needed to still exist so that Ironwood could keep going postal and try to kill everyone. That's why Salem couldn't win that fight.
That, to me, is a prime example of a character being "stupid for the sake of the plot".
More proof of how bad Salem is, a supposed demi god, immortal witch Queen can't stop a couple of kids and one of her own subordinates. Despite the showing telling us ad nauseam how "There is no beating Salem". One of the worse things when it come to any power system is when the writers forget a characters abilities, especially a hax or OP one and never bother to explain why they're not using it.
Hazel needed to die because the writing theme of RWBY would not allow him to actively work along side the heroes after flipping. (Too much toxic male there.)

I recently discovered the part of the RWBY fandom that eats this all up. Believe me, if dumbing down characters for the sake of the plot is a gamble then it's an extremely safe one with this fandom.
I must admit to my chagrin I had been part of such a fan group, though to be fair I didn't realize it immediately. In fact, I was asked to help create and run an RWBY rpg. Shortly after inception, it brought the attention of a gender-studies, social justice warrior who soon became the center of everything, including the devotion of my supposed co-creator. I was expelled after a year for 'being toxic.' Do I really need to say more?

Speaking of honesty, I have to be honest and admit before long I saw all of this coming to a head, but I did my best to convince myself that the other two admin really meant it when everyone would be treated equally, myself included. As for why I joined, 1) the RPG started up at the very beginning of Season Four, 2) despite its flaws I found it was an engaging story, and 3) I've been a GM for over 30 years. I've even been paid a few times to run an RPG at a convention. 4) I only signed up to be a player, but after 24 hours of being there, the founder asked me to be a partner with him and run the place. The RPG was barely two days old. It was hard to say no.
There's more details. The full story is painful and disgusting, though you pretty much know it already. In the end, I was a fool to believe.

Given how they always panders to the fans (mostly on ships) forgetting for example enitre volume of Sun fixing Blake awful character & her problems, just because most vocal (and toxic) part of community demands gayyyyy, I'd bet they will somehow revive her again, possibly with some other relic. If not with relic, then with Pietro giving rest of his Aura to make another Penny (who would have all the memories because lack of logic never stopped them before, so it won't now).

Let's see. List of "Stupid for plot" this volume. (There's alot but I was focusing on the last few chapters.)
- Ruby not using Silver Eyes on Cinder, even though she has never failed to flash Cinder on the spot in the past.
- Weiss not using her glyphs to save Yang (Even though she used them to save Penny and hinder Cinder.)
- Ruby forgetting her semblance and not saving Yang.
- Yang forgetting she has two dust canons for arms but decides to throw her body at Neo.
- Neo forgetting to user her semblance to get out of the ledge hanging jam. Even with Ruby hanging on to her legs. (Oscar did the same thing in 7x13 and she got out of that.)
- Penny forgetting to use Lasers (again) for CvP 3. Just like in CvP 1. She used Maiden powers to recreate everything else except a Laser like equivalent. She didn't even shoot Ice!.
- Neo make a deal with Cinder....... Again!

I got a few in regards to Salem as a whole this Vol
-Salem not attack Atlas and Mantle immediately at the start of the vol, letting her enemies prepare for her arrival, she has an endless army that doesn't need to sleep or eat. All her lieutenants are present minus who she wants to free Watts, there is no excuse not to just attack.
-Salem not using the whale to fly above Atlas and just spray grimm goo on top of the whole city.
-Salem is said to be so powerful yet she cant maim or seriously injure a couple of kids.
-Salem not using her magic to decimate the Atlas military outside of the wall, or creating new types of grimm instead she plays at being the Major from Hellsing.
-Salem has telekinesis using it to twist and crush a nevermore, why didn't she use it on Hazel?
-Further on that same fight we later see Salem can make herself intangible and fly, why didn't she turn herself into smoke to escape Hazel's bear hug?
-last thing on Salem, her somehow knowing where the vault is located but she decided to park the whale on Atlas' front yard.
These are for the last 4 eps
-Atlas military and Grimm keeps vanishing, are they still fighting or not, where are the airships and airborne Grimm?
-Ironwood is said to be paranoid so when waiting for Penny, where are the foot soldiers or paladin mechs?
-Emerald not telling the group anything useful or staying to help fight Cinder and Neo
-Cinder not blasting Weiss and Blake off the edge who are just sitting there grieving for Yang after she fell
-Blake and Penny allowing Cinder to sneak up on Ruby.
-Cinder not blasting Weiss off the edge with maiden magic after she stabs Penny.
-The Happy Huntress and Nora not helping in fighting Cinder and Neo.
Penny not giving the relic to anyone while she fights Cinder.
-Penny forgetting she has magic, can make a blizzard or any elemental attack.
Better add Ruby losing her scythe because she forgot about her semblance only to remember that she has a semblance seconds later

I think the writers are Cinder simps. There is no other explanation for what happens here. Think about it, she still acts all smug and better than everyone else, she never changes her personality despite going through many attempts of character arc, everyone acts like a complete idiot to make her life infinitely easier. It is just ridiculous at this point.
I think they might literally be simps for Jessica Nigri. It's inexplainable otherwise how someone like her ever played more than a guest role and how this character has been on life support for five volumes and counting.

Cinder should've died at the end of Volume 3. Watts and Tyrian are much more entertaining villains.
Female characters (good or bad) will always have much stronger plot armor in this show than their male counterparts.
6 out of 16 male characters died this volume. While only 1 out of 20 female characters did. And that one was killed by a male character.
Male characters really get the short end of the stick in RWBY.

Somehow ,Cinder has unlimited aura, her aura didn't even flicker or broke. She also very good at fighting, without wasting time gloating, blowing up people in time.
Yeah, that was pretty silly. She trashed Everybody, including a Maiden with out breaking a sweat.
Cinder Never got more powerful, new training, or even better intelligence. She is one of the few consistent elements in this show. She never changes.
She is made better or worse by making her opponents better or worse in skill, power and intelligence. As the plot calls for it.
Cinder Looses = Opponents stuck to their game, use their abilities and capabilities, work intelligently.
Cinder Wins = Opponents do all the wrong things, forget to use their abilities and capabilities, and are just plain stupid.

Another thing is how everyone seemingly forgot about the relic. When Oscar and Co. were leaving the whale battlefield, none of them realized that they left the relic behind. Granted none of them were aware that Neo stole it again by that point, but as far as they knew they should have known that they left the relic behind. During their time walking through the tunnels when everything was cooling down, you would think one of them [especially Oscar or Ozpin] would realize they were missing something and go, *"(gasp) Shit! The lamp!"* during their waltz.
You would think so but you have to remember that they all had read the script so they knew it was with Neo and it would come back later. /s
Wasn't the lamp still in the 'lamp room' where Neo was hiding and the reason Salem was asking them about it was because she stole it? And from what it looked like at the end of the episode they were near the exit/mouth. Nowhere near Neo who already took it.

I loved how just a few episodes earlier Penny wipes the floor with Cinder. All while Penny was distracted trying to save her dad. Oh and Emerald was using her semblance as well. Yet in the finale Cinder 1v9s and absolutely dominates. Even though nothing changed. No power ups were given or anything like that.
You know how they could've done that? Have cinder kill Qrow.
Just hear me out. He has magic right? Not a lot, but he has some. Have cinder ask the lamp "where else can I get magic?" Or "is there anyone who isn't a maiden I can steal powers from?" And it shows Qrow. The villans go and gang up on him, cinder ganks his magic and gets a boost. Then when she fights the main characters, her being a bit stronger makes a bit more sense, and someone actually dies at the hands of the villans. Qrow is basically usless anyways. Might as well have him serve a purpose.

It’s amazing how Team RWBY did everything Ironwood was trying so hard to prevent... giving Salem the relic, almost losing the Winter maiden... AGAIN, destroying Altas (and Mantle) and placing the people of Atlas in grave danger at the hands of the Grimm, yet Ironwood is somehow the villain for trying to protect the citizens under his care... Congrats RWBY, you had to make your best character literally the worst just to justify your own BS, and in the end Ironwood’s plan was still a better than theirs.
Ironwood was considered the villain because he actively chose to abandon and then threaten the people of mantle. You know, the citizens under his care. Yeah Team RWBY fucked up, but that doesn't mean James is doing a good thing or even the best choice.

Yes he did abandon Mantle, however, Atlas didn’t have the man power to defend both Altas and Mantle simultaneously and James knew it. Between the civil uproar taking place where civilians were actively attacking Altas’s troops, and the fact that the Grimm had actively punched through Mantles defenses and were invading the entire city, James cut his losses and realized he couldn’t defend both cities at once. You are telling me that if you were in his shoes that you wouldn’t make the same call? You want to tell me you would try to split your forces knowing that you didn’t have enough to protect both cities at once? It was a logically sound decision, it just seems evil because the writers decided that James needed his personality to have a complete 180 shift into a cartoonishly mustache twirling villain to justify their writing.
@@normanmerrick9493 I honestly don't know what choice I would make in James' shoes, everyone reacts differently under pressure. But the show also makes one thing pretty explicit, Ironwood is not making his decisions based on pure facts and logic but upon paranoia. And that's not good, he turns into a tyrant who becomes so single-minded and focused that he loses any flexibility that might actually be off benefit. Ironwood is no longer a person who should be trusted with power, just look at how he executes a civilian leader for just questioning him, or how he somehow believes that he can trust Watts not to do something to backstab him, or how he decides to bomb a civilian population because he wants team RWBY to give up Penny. That's all very problematic.
If you watch the scene where Yang falls, Blake had enough time to run across Ruby and Weiss but Ruby and Weiss had no time to react to Yang falling?

You hit so many nails on the head. Even if they were planning on Penny dying, all logic would say to have Jaune take the relic to Vacuo. He'd be there to aid Ren and the relic would be secured.
And through all of this, I still don't understand why Cinder was so enhanced. The fight went on so long that auras were breaking and fighters were fatigued, but Cinder was fresh the entire time. If Maiden powers were the cause then why was Penny utterly useless in this fight compared to the last time she fought Cinder?
It was literally the Pyrrha fight, just with a different victim.

Why didn't they drop everyone onto Shade's front yard? You want to get everyone into the safest location as possible. I think the huntsmen academy with tons of Huntsmen around would be pretty safe.
Ruby and Penny should be glued together. They are both targets but their powers protect each other. Skilled huntsmen can't touch Penny and Cinder can't deal with silver eyes.
I think they should have kept Penny and Ruby in the portal room and send Blake and/or Oscar with the staff to Shade. Shade and possibly the Summer Maiden should be able to protect the relic and get it into the Vault asap. Penny, Ruby, and whoever else can guard the portal room against Cinder and Neo. Those 2 are probably the only hope for the worst case scenario Salem entering the portal room.
I don't understand how Cinder and Neo won through 6 fighters. 4 are on par/as good as the ace ops, one of which is a silver eyed warrior and the other two are atlas's best fighters turned into maidens.
Because the plot demands drama, and the writers will make the drama happen...no matter how much it DOESN'T make sense.

I seriously couldn’t stop thinking about how two people who could fly/levitate couldn’t save their teammate.
It's even worse when you remember in the finale, Blake launched herself to catch Ruby and only failed because Cinder burned her weapon, Weiss also saved Penny using queen lancer and Ruby saved herself and caught Neo off guard using her semblance. But nobody tried to save Yang when literally each and every one of her teammates has a semblance that can do so.
Somehow they managed to beat the Ace-Ops by "being in the right headspace". LOL

I think Jaune and Emerald probably should have been swapped. It would have completed Emerald's character arc for the Volume, and given her new potential next Volume.
Emerald not fighting Cinder means that she hasn't proven that her loyalty to Cinder isn't still controlling her. The show already established Emerald never had any loyalty to Salem. She used her loyalty to Cinder as justification for her wrongdoings, so closing her redemption arc requires that she must face Cinder at some point. It's like how Zuko had to confront his father before leaving the Fire Nation to join the Avatar. Zuko's worst actions were driven by a desire to prove himself to his father because he was made to believe that was the only way he could have his Honor Restored, and confronting his father allowed him to prove that he finally rejected his father's influence and that he would no longer hold any power of him. Emerald hasn't had such an irreversible character moment that genuinely proves that she has changed. She could very easily end up serving Cinder again if Salem is defeated somehow, or manipulated by Cinder into betraying everyone like Azula did to Zuko in Book 2. Emerald's arc is still in flux, and doesn't offer anything stable because she's only joining the protagonists because that is currently what's in her best interests, and it doesn't directly conflict with her loyalty to Cinder yet. She hasn't even had a line that suggests that she wouldn't be behaving differently if Salem weren't trying to kill everyone. The arc feels more like play-dough than a fleshed out storyline, and that makes it impossible for me to trust her when her redemption arc feels incomplete. I'm going to be distrustful of Emerald until either Cinder dies, or Emerald fight Cinder, and they missed their earliest opportunity to change that.
Emerald has already interact with Penny more in this Volume than Jaune has since Penny first appeared. In addition to that, Emerald was also partly responsible for Penny dying the first time. Having Emerald not want to kill Penny a second time would both show growth, as she is now seen feeling reluctance and remorse while doing something she previously did without hesitation. It also further proves that Emerald is now doing something to deliberately sabotage Cinder's goals, something which she previously tried to help Cinder do in the same Volume. It would cement that Emerald is not blindly obeying Cinder's orders anymore, and that she will go beyond trying to escape Salem out of self-preservation. Without a moment like this, how am I supposed to trust that Emerald isn't going to just leave everyone when the dust settles?
I've been wanting the idea of Emerald betraying the "heroes" when Cinder attacks them in which Emerald attacks Penny and Winter and gets the relics making Ruby and co shocked to learn that Emerald never did change and Emerald tells them in a sick mocking tone that she was never on her side and was just setting a trap for them that even Cinder didn't knew about and this causes Cinder to view that Emerald is a good minion and Ruby and co gets very P about and yells Emerald that she lied to them while Emerald doesn't give a damn
I'm actually so pissed of they made it so Jaune, YET AGAIN, get's all the interesting screentime.
The bullying arc in Volume 1, his romance in Volume 2 and 3, grieving for SO LONG in Volume 4, 5 and 6 (that damn statue and crying fit at Cinder), killing a major character like Penny that will lead to some interesting interactions and characters development I bet, AND falling into the interesting cool island with the 4 "main characters???

I agree that the volume 8 finale could of been better, especially because the writers decided to kill Penny *again*. I'm not even a Penny fan and I found it disappointing.
I thought it was obvious (to me) when she popped up in 7x1, that she was brought back (especially with memories and personality intact) just to kill her off again in some big dramatic moment, especially for Ruby. My prediction went from 95% sure to 100% sure as soon as she became a maiden.
I guess we'll have to wait for V9 to get Ruby's reaction.

I liked Jaune’s character, but after this volume it’s hard not to notice how Miles seems to take steps to bend the plot so his character is just as important and active as team RWBY.

Besides when Maidens transfer the powers or get them stolen, they die either way. They're bound to the powers like a Red Lantern power ring.

You figured Roman would have taught her better OR better yet, Neo would have been prepared due to how awful Cinder was to Roman.ie. Threatening to kill him and burn him alive if he failed.
But nope, Neo is only a fanservice character, thus her emotional attachment to Roman only comes up when it is needed instead of being one of her core character traits.

Although, Cinder was supposed to learn that she needs a team to accomplish her goals (but now she has lost watts and Neo), this will come back to bite her. The problem is that neo even trusted her after everything that has happened. Also, the fact that she plans Ruby even though Salem and Cinder are responsible for his death, so she should have been plotting.

Salem: Flies all the way to Atlas, doesn't do anything when she gets there.

Let’s the other side characters get a little more interaction and bonding moments with the team. That way we can actually relive them when they all say they are friends. Let Ruby have an arch where she decides she not read for leadership for a while and stand down. Because she’s not ready for it. Then when Beacon fell we would have had a greater attachment to the school and other characters and a better understanding of the world and how the fall affects it.

It really says a lot when One Piece does the good guys planning around the bad guys better.
It's even better because Luffy and his crew often get their asses handed to them when they first encounter an enemy and often end up surviving by the skin of their teeth.eg. Luffy vs Crocodile.
Luffy faced him THREE TIMES and nearly died in the two encounters and only managed to beat Crocodile when Luffy knew all his weaknesses and isolated him from the desert where his powers were at their peak.

Honestly, people being dumb is not that abnormal. People make mistake, we aren't perfect, blah blah blah. The real issue is how often it happens... ALMOST EVERY TIME. There are four members of team RWBY. What's the point in having four members if they all smile and say "sure lets go with that" when making a plan? Does nobody pay attention?
My personal issue isn't that they get stupid for the sake of the plot. My issue is that they all happen to get stupid at the same time.

“Stupid for the sake of plot” that sounds like every CW show ever.
If Cinder can make glass objects with her powers why doesn't she just make something to reflect Ruby's Silver Eyes to make it harder to suffer defeat from it? So that way it wouldn't be insta-win and Ruby would have to strategize on when to use it or get Cinder's guard down. Then Ruby doesn't have to "forget" she has the ability every time she's in a crucial battle against Cinder.
So many of these characters have Semblances that would make them super OP if they only knew how to use them properly. Ruby could materialize inside of things and explode them, Glynda could crush people's brains, Marrow could actually use his Semblance at all, so forth... it's really annoying how they don't use them correctly.
"Plot induced stupidity" is a better way of putting it. I've felt that since volume four we've had a lot of plot induced lack of competence in battle.
Biggest offender lately being Penny. In volume three Penny held her own and I think even got a hit on Pyrrha in their arena match before she got quartered. Pyrrha almost beat Cinder one-on-one.
Penny is now super-charged with maiden powers. Cinder hasn't gotten any stronger since that vol. 3 fight (arguably she's weaker since the grimm arm has no aura). And yet Penny is tossed around like all of her combat readiness was just forgotten, just cuz it works for the plot for Cinder to incapacitate her.
And don't you dare argue it's cuz she's not used to being human. Nothing she's done since returning in vol. 7 has shown even a trace of her previous competence.
Although we haven't seen a character power showcase like Penny's swords debut since the early volumes, so maybe the animators just don't put the time into the work like they used to to make the action sequences believable.
Maybe if we saw Penny holding her own for at least a little bit before getting utterly wasted I'd believe it. Maybe if I'd seen Vernal actually showcasing any skill at all I'd believe she could handle Weiss in the battle of Haven.
It's like they only have budget for one really good action sequence per volume these days. V4 got Qrow vs Tyrian, V5 got Yang vs Branwen Thugs, V6 got... uh... hm. Can't think of one... Team vs Giant Mech was okay. V7 had Winter and Penny vs Cinder and that was pretty great and gave me hope for at least the fight scenes again, even tho Penny was kinda tossed around.
Which apparently is the norm now, which is absolutely tragic since in Vol. 1-3 she was an absolute powerhouse instead of sort of backup. And this season she was mostly somewhere between macguffin and damsel in distress.
At least Neo's power level is consistent. She hasn't lost a fight yet.
Oh wait.
Can we also talk about HOW RWBY CAUSED AN IMMIGRATION CRISIS?!
It will either be swept under the rug or "Magically Resolved" to make our "Heroes" look good, despite the fact that they're practically a roving band of terrorists that destroyed an entire Kingdom.

@@JarenLemon Yeah, it's not a GREAT parallel. All that's the same is the event of being covered with water. It's a parallel in name only. They did the same thing with their Cowardly Lion parallel. All they did was make his story end sadly instead of triumphantly. The Lion lost his courage. However, we don't see WHY Leonardo lost his courage, not even the moment he lost it. He already lost courage when we first see him. We don't get that journey. The parallel, the twist you could say, is shallow---we only know it's an interesting twist of character because of the source material. We don't know RWBY's version of this character, because we don't see Leonardo's journey. The story banks solely on you knowing the Cowardly Lion from Wizard of Oz.
Same with the Tin Man "losing his heart". I think it was in Eruptionfang's video about the unbelievability of Ironwood's turn, but Ironwood's behavior in Volume 8 seemed more like he lost his mind rather than his heart. And for most of Vol 8 when he was fighting a battle, overseeing the creation of a tactical nuke, which appears would have worked had Winter's team been able to deploy it---his actions seemed perfectly reasonable. So even then he wasn't acting crazy, or like he didn't care (heartless), except in specific circumstances, like shooting the council member. If Ironwood was truly heartless, acting for the sake of ruthless expedience, why didn't he use Qrow as bait for Ruby, which later in the volume he admitted he didn't do because he hesitated. I can't remember what exactly he said, something about not being willing to do what had to be done. So on one hand he's ruthless, but when he has an easily exploitable weakness of the people he's after, he isn't ruthless anymore? That's more in line with the thinking of a crazy person, an inconsistent line of actions, than someone who's "lost his heart".
I think the writers mixed up what it means to be "heartless" with...well, I don't even know what this is supposed to be aside from insanity. "Losing heart" also means "losing your courage"---"he's lost the heart to fight" is equivalent to giving up. "Losing heart" would look more like someone becoming apathetic. It's clear through Vol 7 - 8 than Ironwood cares a heck of a lot about a number of things. Like being betrayed. That hurt him. It hurt him in Vol 7, it hurt him in 8 with Winter at the end. He never lost his heart to fight---he fought till the very last episode. Really, the point where he lost his heart was when he didn't shoot Cinder or Salem. That's what losing heart looks like. You just don't care anymore. And according to the writers commentary for Vol 7, it was when he shot Oscar that he lost his heart (at least I think so. That's what I remember from people reading the transcript).
Ironwood at least had way more development than Leonardo, but in Vol 7, the reason he wanted to leave Mantle was to save as many people as he thought he could, including saving the rest of the world by preventing Salem from getting the relic and the Winter maiden. His heart was fully intact...he cared. What the writers attempted to do with Ironwood was to flesh out that parallel of the Tin Man. We did indeed see the journey. It just wasn't a journey of a man losing his heart. Or at least not mainly his heart.
Unless they decide he didn't die, and he comes back in other volumes, being actually heartless. Then I guess we did. Best parallel ever, maybe.

Ruby walks into ironwood's office, finds out her sister when behind her back, and revealed private information to a vigilantly and, as far as she knows, had no intention of telling her. Ruby gets pissed off at yang and Blake for not even considering telling her. Now that team rwby's trust has been shot to hell, the ace ops destroy them. And just to add insult to injury, Qrow dies instead of clover.

This sounds really good, and to think of it, I still prefer clover to die, but not tryian and qrow vs clover bullshit. Like robin causes the whole ship to go down because she was picking a fight with tryain, tryian is free and qrow joins up with clover to fight tryian. Robin is injured and cant fight because shes was too naïve. The fighting goes on but qrows bad luck gets in the way of clovers good luck and tryain knocks put qrow. Clover is on his own on fighting tryain but qrows bad luck is still there and when qrow gets up its too late. Tryian grabs qrows weapon and kill clover. When tryian escapes, clover says "wow qrow you are really a bad luck charm. But you still fought by my side as my friend" and clover dies. Qrow is broken down and robin ( still injuryed and on the ground as she did watched the whole fight) says the police are coming and instead of submitting, qroe makes his choice. He tells robin how he is a danger to anyone around him with his bad luck and he shouldnt be around Anyone anymore. Robin tries to convince him and qrow tells her " if you see ruby and yang tell her i will always love them." And when poilce arrive, qrow flys off alone.
I like how people's ideas for the story in the comment section is way cooler than the plot.
The saddest thing in my opinion is that there was a great moment to show character growth that was wasted. Jaune's (alleged) biggest regret was his failure to save Pyrrha. So have Cinder about to kill Penny, but this time Jaune does save the redhead. Would have been a great way to show how Jaune improved in skill, all those solo nights rewatching Pyrrha's videos paying off against the one that killed her.
But nope, this is RWBY so the writing will forever suck.
This is why, regardless of how terrible of writing you think it'd be, I think Pyrrha will be back in some form in V9 to interact with Jaune, since as you pointed out it is dumb for Jaune to not go through the portal, showing they wanted to set up V9 over having logic.
They also just want Jaune to do everything. Jaune is more of a main character at this point than Ruby because he does literally everything, and Oscar does the things he don't
Guarantee Jaune is gonna kill Cinder in the future, because screw good arcs and rivalries for Ruby, Jaune is Cinder's rival now

While it’s not stupidly does anyone else think it’s absolu Ridiculous that Neo was able to one shot Yang? I mean seriously if that’s the case she hits harder than the Paladin from V2, Mercury (who’s strong enough to not get stomped by Yatsu) and Adam in V6

Even if that was a valid arguement, then we end back up with the one strike by Neo taking out the tank of the team with an Adam-like strike from her umbrella poker.
Which would put a strike from Neo on par with Adam's arua breaking moon slice. A striking ability Neo has never demonstrated before.

The writers had to have their Bumblebee moment. Keep the hardcore shippers well fed. Even if it meant making other characters stupid for a second in order to have the scene play out as it did.
That is one of the issues that bother me most for the show as of recent volumes. Scenes that are blatantly writen to bypass logic and reason just to pander or virtue signal.
That's when it becomes bad writing.
Two more things come to mind: We see RWBY characters defy gravity with weapon recoil in the past. Yang and Ruby from volumes 1 - 5 just would have returned to solid ground by firing off their weapons repeatedly and propelling themselves with recoil. But they "kinda forgot" they did this for several volumes before the 8th?
And the other: They sent the refugees to Vacuo, where they'll be regarded as useless mouths on feet. Vacuo people have an extremely Darwinian attitude. Why not send them into previously secured territory, like Mistral?
How do they know if vacou isn't going to see this surge of atleasion people appearing out of nowhere as an invasion?
