    Closed captions are up!
    *Edit:* Here's the finished Kingdom Hearts video!

    I swear I listen to other Kpop groups, but the other groups I like are more popular and have too many copyrighted fancams to look through. Sorry Twice...
    Edit: Loona may not have won but they did great on Queendom and we orbits did our best! I blame Mnet for not giving them round 1 points...

    This is honestly crazy. I think everyone who ever watched the show thought that Kipo was blasian. I thought they made that so obviously clear. I never thought the creator, someone who produced a show with a diverse cast and did an amazing job, would say something so stupid. He's talking about, "how he can't say she's one thing or another because he's just some white dude :/" but once again he literally wrote a whole show about poc. Also the fact that he can't even get the facts of his own show right. Kipo is not a test tube baby if she was organically carried and born. She could also still have her father's genes even if she was artificially created. It just doesn't make sense for him to say this as his reasoning.
    While Kipo does not have predominately black features, some people look more like their dad or more like their mom. Some blasian people look more black than asian or more asian than black. It's never a 50/50 mix (like for all we know, she could've just had darker skin if she had a normal skin tone). Either way, it was a poor choice on the creators part. Like you said in the video, biggest plot twist of the century. I'm just going to treat this like jk rowling retconning her characters for no reason.

      @@dirtiestharry6551 I know what a test tube baby is and Kipo's not, for the very least at no point during the show does it suggest that she is. During the flashback Kipo's mom is already pregnant when they decide to experiment on her there's no suggestion that she's not the result of natural insemination

    BrOoo whAt??? Im half Asian and Spanish and I share Kipo’s bday, so I felt attached to her identity of being half Asian. I loved the idea of her being Blasian. I cant believe the creator had to go ruin it like this 🤦🏻‍♀️

  • @HotDogTimeMachine385
    @HotDogTimeMachine385 ปีที่แล้ว +34

    If I understand this correctly, Kipo was written and designed to be korean but later in the production they made her dad black, and it was too late to redesign her to be darker.
    The creator felt like "she isn't designed to be half black so i don't feel comfortable in calling her half black".
    He tried overcorrecting, but said it in a dumb and confusing way causing more problems. (And the test tube baby thing isn't even in the show so who cares.)

      @@toomanycrowns 100% I swear if some (cough cough usually white people) people would just keep quiet they wouldn't dig themselves into a hole. You tried so hard to explain something you ended up looking racist. Slow clap.
      And like the worst part is the average person would read that and think he's racist. I'm like 90% sure he isn't racist but I had to spend 10 minutes imagining what he must have been thinking (i give people the benefit of the doubt way too often) and how the words came from his mouth.
      I'm just gonna blame twitter or something, that website lowers the IQ whenever you sign in.

    Elisa from the 90s cartoon Gargoyles is half Indigenous half black. When developing the cartoon, the creators considered making her Latina but when they casted her VA, who is black and part indigenous, they incorporated into her character. While Elisa's final design can still be read as racially ambiguous, the series made sure to incorporate both her cultural identities with her indigenous father, black mother and her siblings who had more explicitly black features. Everyone in the fandom knows Elisa is meant to be black. It looked like Kipo was also going this route since the creator admitted they gave up on the test tube baby idea, therefore making her black father still the biological dad but nope, he had to be weird about it.

    • @toomanycrowns
      @toomanycrowns  ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Ooh I love the Gargoyles show! I didn't watch it as a kid but I watched it a year ago; I think it did a really good job implementing Elisa's mixed identities into her character and I hope more shows can give spotlight to nonwhite mixed-race protagonists.

    The thing that gets me about this is I had always assumed Kipo was an IVF or a "test tube baby" because she had megamute DNA in her, and just assumed they did that in a lab before putting her embryo into Song. Like logically, how else would they have done it? The show, to me, seemed to imply they had been working on this experiment for a while before Song decided to test it out on herself/Kipo.
    Anyways, I don't really understand how the creator can make a story with genetically modified humans, yet somehow assume the fans would not have thought Kipo to be biologically related to her dad??? Why can she be part megamute but not blaisn? Why would he be comfortable claiming her as Korean, but somehow being Blasian, BLACK, is too much, and makes him uncomfortable??? Is it because he's white? If so then why did he feel so comfortable making a show where the majority of the main cast are Black and Asian?

    As someone who is blasian im shocked Kipo wasn't ment to be so...
    At least in the newest episodes of Owl House MILD SPOILERS FOR SEASON 3.
    her hair has gotten curlier along with her mother's. In the background there is a hair straighter in the trashcan implying they used to straighten their hair and they stopped doing it i think its also a metaphor for how they stopped repressing themselves and i find it really sweet makes me really happy.

    Honestly I feel like this was just such a dumb avoidable mess.
    Sometimes writers should just… not. Like I don’t think Rad MEANT any harm, he was trying to be transparent about the development process and ended up coming off like a huge ass, but like… this all could have been avoided if he just… SHUT.

    I'm white but as soon as a found out the creator of Kipo was white I felt so weird about it 😭 like, to have a show with not only a (ambiguously) all black lead cast but also feature tons of black music in the soundtrack. It went from really cool representation to some kind of weird fixation of the creator... I think people should strive for more representation in their stories always but Kipo very much presents itself as a BLACK story so shouldn't it have black creatives behind it? The one thing that made me feel better is that most of the writing staff is black lol

    • @darkraysofsunshine3113
      @darkraysofsunshine3113 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      It doesn't help that when you go onto his twitter, or his tiktok, other shows he's trying to pitch are also full of all black castings. Like on one hand I'd love to see more cartoons with a majority black cast, and it's not fetishistic as you see a lot of white men do with like Asian people/cultures... but it's still _weird._
      If I look up a show with an all black cast, I'd like to see a black person as the creator of it. I know that there's a lot more than just him who works on these shows, there's probably tons of black ppl behind the scenes who are writing episodes, designing characters, all very involved in how exactly the story is portrayed. So even if he's the "creator" it's not just him who's working on it. But Idk, there are black people who could be put in his position making shows just as good, with a casts just as black, yet there a white man is, being hailed for all of it.
      _(sorry for the rant I have a lot of feelings on this)_

    • @Trunksette
      @Trunksette ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @@darkraysofsunshine3113 No I feel the same!! I even found his old social medias before Kipo became a show his art was still filled with black people, and all the same type of art, very emulative of hip-hop styles. It feels like he's obsessed with blackness as an aesthetic rather than just being really passionate about black representation?? And you're absolutely right why is this white man being given the green light for another animated series with an all black cast over actual black creatives? I still enjoy Kipo but I feel very... doubtful about the creators intentions and I think the whole Kipo blasian blunder really highlights that. He's not out here because he cares about black representation he just thinks blackness is cool or stylish.

    Basically the creator of this show did what many in "the industry" tend to do; that is, _USE_ us to get exposure and make their money, and once they've gotten all they can and drained the sink dry, they suddenly come out and make clear statements on what their "true" stances and beliefs are. Make no mistake; this guy knew EXACTLY what he was doing. He knew the backlash and he kept his mouth shut so as not to jeopardize his bag. The industry is always doing this; throwing a few token Black characters at us and we give our undying support. It's transactional at this point. Just look at the music industry:
    Justin Timberlake's ENTIRE early solo career was made up of him being a caricature of a Black guy. He sang in a "Black" style, he mimicked other _more talented_ Black artists like Michael Jackson, etc. He BLATANTLY copied their style. Heck, Bruno Mars has _literally_ made his ENTIRE CAREER doing this. And just look at Miley Cyrus! When she wanted to "reinvent" herself from her previous "Disney girl" _Hannah Montana_ style teenybop music, she began making hip-hop and R&B themed songs (I'm SPECIFICALLY talking about her 'Bangerz' album) and becoming an offensive caricature of EVERY negative stereotype of BET's version of what the media portrays Black women as (i.e. "twerking," hyper s*xualized, among other things). And just like Justin Timberlake, once she got the attention and stardom she so DESPERATELY needed to be taken seriously, what did she (they) do?
    Wendy Williams said it best a few years ago when she said, _"They take off their Black costumes and become White again."_ And they are then welcomed back into White society with their newly acquired wealth, made from the Black fans whom they now look down their noses upon. Immediately upon shedding her Black costume, Miley went on an interview tour walking back all the obscene things she did in her 'Bangerz' days. Now she is "Hometown Miley", safe and palatable for mainstream White audiences. Oh, and we can't forget musical artist P!nk who did the SAME THING...though she likes to blame _her_ "Black costume" donned in her early years on producer L.A. Reid "forcing" her to wear it. 🙄
    For the record, I never watched this Wonderbeast show. As a Black woman, I've become jaded and suspicious of shows featuring Black main characters made by non-Black people. Simply because these characters always inevitably disappoint in some way, either due to words or actions within the story, or by something the show's creator said or did. There are SO many Black creators out there with great ideas and with characters who have AUTHENTICALLY Black experiences, who DON'T have to hide behind soundtracks of urban filled music tracks to "trick" your mind into viewing them as "Black" (a trick often utilized in media). Why not hire some of them? Why not get some of those Black writers in the writing room? I'm not saying that a non-Black person is incapable of writing a Black character. Some of my favorite stories and franchises are done by non-Black people. A genuinely GOOD writer will be able to write a GOOD character, regardless of color.
    But WHY do we keep having instances of this type of situation? Where we get our hopes up only to be let down? WHY do we keep allowing ourselves to be deceived and thrown the bare minimum?

    • @princessnazario2597
      @princessnazario2597 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      SAY IT LOUDER!! I can't believe I never noticed this pattern in the industry. Doesn't help that black protag characters by nonblack people, and in the mainstream tend to be so ambiguous or lighter skinned half of the time. I know her skin is pink, but would've it really killed them to draw her with some black hairstyles if it's the 'preferred canon'? Luz could've had some more prominent black features other than darker skin if she's meant to be lightskinned, like curly hair or visible lips.
      Ambiguous mixed people irl exist, but it's not usually the majority as it's in most cartoon shows and media. Afro-latina myself and I have the same skin tone as Luz, yet I still have those features that make me very visibly black. It's just so sick to me for nonblack creators to exploit the already starved representation for not just black people, but unambigous black female protagonists by just giving us the same ambiguously-designed girls, saying their black and once their shows makes enough money retconning it.
