My grandfather was 18 years old when he was sent to France in 1917. He wrote on field postcards what he would like to have sent from home. Steel nails for the boots, 2 pieces of leather for the shoe soles. Some wax to keep the moisture out of the boots. Censorship banned critical words or references to where you were. In 1974 I was 8 years old and played with an air gun with a cork popping out of the front. He took me by the hand and walked with me to a small river. He said: "In there is my rifle from the First World War and my brother's from the Second World War. Throw yours in here too so it never causes any damage again``. I did that and he bought me a Märklin train from a toy store. He said trains connect people, guns just kill them. Greetings from Germany.
That’s great (grand)parenting! Except it should have been a Fleischmann, of course. Just kidding! When I was young the model train world was kinda divided. You had either Fleischmann oder Märklin. I do remember those kork guns too.

I went to Verdun in 2015. I went to the French cemetery, and I remember standing in front of the graves of two brothers who died on the same day. This short film reminded me of that.

Last year I visited Verdun and its surrounding battlefields. I had a very dark few days as I felt just a tiny amount of the sadness in the land. All we can do is turn up our love and commit to peace in response to the unimaginable suffering. May all who died rest in peace and rise in glory.

Actually quite a few politicians served in various wars before being voted into office as well as men and women who were, or later went on to be, Hollywood actors and actresses. Many officers as well as enlisted me and women also came from quite rich and powerful families more so during the First World War. If some of them had survived then it may have changed history. Today's crop not so much I agree however you cannot make a comment without knowing that it is not entirely correct.
Not true. The vast majority of the British officer corps during WWI came from the upper middle class and the aristocracy. It's an American thing to allow the ordinary man to do the fighting and dying. In Britain it's seen as their duty because back in the day that's how our army was forme before we had a professional standing army. The casualty rate among junior officers during WWI far outweighed per capita that of the OR which by 1917 had the perverse effect of forcing the army to commission ORs because they'd run out of suitable candidates from the usual sources. Additionally, contrary to conventional wisdom, senior officers were in the firing line too. My great uncle was a brigadier who was seriously wounded in 1918 when his Fwd HQ was shelled, he was lucky and just lost an arm, others were not so.

I was in Iraq. God help us. That was hard to watch. I had a buddy in my squad Cpl. Keven McCray Jones he turned 21 two months later, he was dead, IED. His mother lost two of her children, one to war one to cancer. My brother was a Combat medic. His unit had so many casualties that they ran out of body bags. On his last mission He had to take his best friend home in 3 trash bags. Imagine having to put a ragged torso of someone you were just taking to in a trash bag. He couldn't talk about it for 2 years.

Difficile de dire merci devant le carnage de cette guerre et plus particulièrement, de Verdun, je n'ai fait que penser à ses héros qui' ont pris le premier choc, ceux du Colonel Driant, lui même tombant en portant secours à un de ses soldats, il retarderont assez longtemps pour que l'arrière se reprenne enfin, bizarrement, rares sont les évocations sur lui, sur eux, seul les livres allemands en cause encore car lors de la découverte de son corps, les allemands lui rendrons hommage, en tout cas, merci, 12 mn d'émotion intense, ce cours métrage est très réussi et je vais de ce pas le propager à mon tour et en espérant qu'il soit primé un jour

Not sure what to say to this. A pointless war fought by young men who believed they were fighting for the good cause.....a war which ultimately helped to shape our current world. Good wee film.
Verdun was essentially a an artillery duel. The German's plan was to grind the French army down by attrition. Obtaining ground was secondary.The French had to keep sending troops out to replace the others killed by shells, to hold those positions. They would send a 100 men to occupy a trench line. Maybe a third of them made it through the German barrage. The battle came down to which side could take the most losses, and still survive. The French won, but Verdun scarred the nation's soul for decades. Hence the Maginot line in WW2 .Today, there are parts of Verdun that are so full of unexploded shells, and poison gas residue, its unsafe to visit.
The battlefield was about 30 x 5 km in size and the Germans fired about 17 kg of grenades per square meter, the French 1.5 times that. There are ways, for example at Fort Voux, where there are still shrapnel and grenade fragments everywhere. You can't imagine what the soldiers went through back then.
I think it is a little too easyJet to say "the french won". The war was finally decided by the huge amount of ressources which the Entente gained with the US intervention. Without these ressources the german plan which you described correctly might have worked, especially after the russian capitulation.
My maternal grandfather, D/9947 Private William Victor Collins of the 6th Dragoon Guards [Carabiniers], was killed alongside his pal on the night of 21/22 June 1917, in an artillery barrage at Guillemont Farm on the Somme. I've visited his grave, and left a set of my stars and crowns. They lie side-by-side in Row B Plot 1 and 2, in the Northern Extension of the Templeux-le-Guerard Military Cemetery. His daughter, whom he saw just once when she was three, was my mother.
Its situations like the one shown here why family members can no longer be in the same unit, both the first and second world war has droves of losses and losses of entire genetic lines because one brother tried to save another and died in the process. I respect the love for a family member but it makes you do stupid things in hopes they and your self will survive. Sadly though many did not and theres no taking that pain away from the families that lost them. Respect to anyone in the military in any part of the world. Ich habe sehr oft die Schlachtfelder besucht und auch schon selber Führungen gemacht, man kann sich nicht vorstellen was die einfachen Soldaten mitgemacht haben. Aber die Führung ist immer schön hinten gesessen und hat befehle gegeben, wie in jeden Krieg. Diese Menschenverachtung hat sich in den letzten 100 Jahren nicht geändert.

My great uncle Charlie died on the front just four weeks before the war ended. He was just a young lad. I often wonder the nature and circumstances of his death. Of his two brothers one returned with severe shell shock, the other 'unharmed', as unharmed you could be having lived through hell.

Les derniers ont été découvert pas plus tard qu'au mois de novembre en face du monument Israélite a côté de l'ossuaire et le front de Verdun est relativement plus large. il faut compter rive gauche et droite,les combats ne se passent pas dans la ville mais au niveau de la ceinture de fortifications autour,grosso modo du bois des caures et vaux pour l'extrémité de la rive droite jusqu'à la côte 304 et les villages de esnes/avocourt/malancourt pour l'extreme de la rive gauche soit une trentaine de km de front
Pour tout nos frères, nos ancêtres tombés au combat pour notre pays. 🫡🇫🇷 🇫🇷 🇫🇷 🫡 ça remets les idées en place, surtout la veille de Noël au chaud bien en sécurité. Beaucoup trop sont parti à cause de Généraux incompétent, qui n'avais rien compris à la guerre moderne, mais heureusement nous en avons eu aussi des très bon. Ne jamais oublier !

Sujet de fin d'étude parfaitement maitrisé qui laisse augurer un très bon avenir dans le milieu du cinéma 😉 même si il y a quelques petits défaut, il faut bien trouver quelque chose à redire , quelque chose de perfectible ( pour qui je me prends à critiquer alors que je suis incapable de produire le dixième de ce que je viens de voir à l'image 😁...). Au niveau du son lors des scènes de bataille (j'ai un home studio et j'écoute au casque) le volume est un poil trop fort (même dans le cinéma il y a la guerre du "loudness" comme dans la musique🤣, il va falloir taper sur l'ingé son 😁😅) et lors des scènes qui rappellent le passé il y a un peu trop de" blur" et de "grain" sur l'image (là il faut taper sur l'étalonneur😁🤣 ou sur le réalisateur qui a donné les ordres😂😁). Mais c'est juste pour chipoter car le travail et le rendu sont vraiment au top😀
Hello merci pour votre commentaire ça fait très plaisir ! Pour ce qui est du son, on s'est longuement battu contre l'ingé son car nous n'avions pas la même vision que lui sur le mixage... Pour ce qui est des souvenirs, ce sont les shots bruts, retouchés uniquement en étalonnage. On les a tournés en pellicule 16mm avec des objectifs anamorphiques montes dessus, ce qui produit ce grain naturel et flou de par le choix d'objectif ;). Il existe un making of de notre film sur cette chaine qui explique un peu le processus global du film dont la pellicule. :)
After watching " All is quite on the western front " really put the brutality of WWI. Millions died for yards... hopefully, we'll never have to experience that again !
It says a lot about the human animal that after the infinite horrors of the Great War, we would not only do it again, but over and over and over, making it more horrible each time.

The craziest part is that this was very tame compared to the actual carnage into which these brave men were cast.

The battlefield was about 30 x 5 km in size and the Germans fired about 17 kg of grenades per square meter, the French 1.5 times that. There are ways, for example at Fort Voux, where there are still shrapnel and grenade fragments everywhere. You can't imagine what the soldiers went through back then.
I think it is a little too easyJet to say "the french won". The war was finally decided by the huge amount of ressources which the Entente gained with the US intervention. Without these ressources the german plan which you described correctly might have worked, especially after the russian capitulation.

My maternal grandfather, D/9947 Private William Victor Collins of the 6th Dragoon Guards [Carabiniers], was killed alongside his pal on the night of 21/22 June 1917, in an artillery barrage at Guillemont Farm on the Somme. I've visited his grave, and left a set of my stars and crowns. They lie side-by-side in Row B Plot 1 and 2, in the Northern Extension of the Templeux-le-Guerard Military Cemetery. His daughter, whom he saw just once when she was three, was my mother.

Its situations like the one shown here why family members can no longer be in the same unit, both the first and second world war has droves of losses and losses of entire genetic lines because one brother tried to save another and died in the process. I respect the love for a family member but it makes you do stupid things in hopes they and your self will survive. Sadly though many did not and theres no taking that pain away from the families that lost them. Respect to anyone in the military in any part of the world. Ich habe sehr oft die Schlachtfelder besucht und auch schon selber Führungen gemacht, man kann sich nicht vorstellen was die einfachen Soldaten mitgemacht haben. Aber die Führung ist immer schön hinten gesessen und hat befehle gegeben, wie in jeden Krieg. Diese Menschenverachtung hat sich in den letzten 100 Jahren nicht geändert.
Was die deutschen gemacht haben in Frankreich ? 🤬

My great uncle Charlie died on the front just four weeks before the war ended. He was just a young lad. I often wonder the nature and circumstances of his death. Of his two brothers one returned with severe shell shock, the other 'unharmed', as unharmed you could be having lived through hell.

Les derniers ont été découvert pas plus tard qu'au mois de novembre en face du monument Israélite a côté de l'ossuaire et le front de Verdun est relativement plus large. il faut compter rive gauche et droite,les combats ne se passent pas dans la ville mais au niveau de la ceinture de fortifications autour,grosso modo du bois des caures et vaux pour l'extrémité de la rive droite jusqu'à la côte 304 et les villages de esnes/avocourt/malancourt pour l'extreme de la rive gauche soit une trentaine de km de front

Sujet de fin d'étude parfaitement maitrisé qui laisse augurer un très bon avenir dans le milieu du cinéma 😉 même si il y a quelques petits défaut, il faut bien trouver quelque chose à redire , quelque chose de perfectible ( pour qui je me prends à critiquer alors que je suis incapable de produire le dixième de ce que je viens de voir à l'image 😁...). Au niveau du son lors des scènes de bataille (j'ai un home studio et j'écoute au casque) le volume est un poil trop fort (même dans le cinéma il y a la guerre du "loudness" comme dans la musique🤣, il va falloir taper sur l'ingé son 😁😅) et lors des scènes qui rappellent le passé il y a un peu trop de" blur" et de "grain" sur l'image (là il faut taper sur l'étalonneur😁🤣 ou sur le réalisateur qui a donné les ordres😂😁). Mais c'est juste pour chipoter car le travail et le rendu sont vraiment au top😀
Hello merci pour votre commentaire ça fait très plaisir ! Pour ce qui est du son, on s'est longuement battu contre l'ingé son car nous n'avions pas la même vision que lui sur le mixage... Pour ce qui est des souvenirs, ce sont les shots bruts, retouchés uniquement en étalonnage. On les a tournés en pellicule 16mm avec des objectifs anamorphiques montes dessus, ce qui produit ce grain naturel et flou de par le choix d'objectif ;).
Il existe un making of de notre film sur cette chaine qui explique un peu le processus global du film dont la pellicule. :)
