  • Charles Louis Ambroise Thomas (5 August 1811 - 12 February 1896) was a French composer, best known for his operas Mignon (1866) and Hamlet (1868, after Shakespeare) and as Director of the Conservatoire de Paris from 1871 till his death.
Overture to the Opera Mignon (1866)
BBC Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Yan Pascal Tortelier
Mignon is an opéra comique (or opera in its second version) in three acts. The original French libretto was by Jules Barbier and Michel Carré, based on Goethe's novel Wilhelm Meisters Lehrjahre. The Italian version was translated by Giuseppe Zaffira. The opera is mentioned in James Joyce's "The Dead" (Dubliners) and Willa Cather's The Professor's House. Thomas's goddaughter Mignon Nevada was named after the main character.[

Heard this piece on radio recently. I am really enjoyable. But presenter tell me the piece of music. I don't know what presenter said. Then ask her by e-mail then reply me. Actually, it is the first time i know the piece of music and composer and never heard before.

Me too. I heard this piece of music on a radio program of RTHK radio4 this morning. The presenter told audience the title and orchestra. But it was still puzzling to me. I searched for the title with Minion Overture to start with. Lucky that I finally found Mignon Overture. 😊❤

One of my musical loves from years ago. Heard it on the radio, never thought I'd find it again. But fully a decade later, here you are. What a gift, what a treasure! Thank and bless you!

There's good music, there's bad music, and there's Ambroise Thomas

Well, is Thomas - in your opinion - good or bad? Or neither nor?

andy thomas's comment is a quote by composer Emmanuel Chabrier. I'm actually not sure if either of them (Chabrier and andy thomas) mean it in a good way or not!

When one French composer talks about another, it is usually an insult, overt or covert. Nowadays most of Chabrier's works are ignored. A few hang on at Pops concert. Someone who has time on their hands can compare how many videos have been uploaded to You Tube of both composers. I have three cats to take care of >^..^

I played the Raymond overture a year or so back and rather enjoyed it. Safe to say I was the only one in the band who did mind.
