Vocal Solo with Jazz Ensemble - Grade 3
From the latest James Bond blockbuster motion picture Skyfall, pop superstar Adele hit the airwaves and charts with this powerful theme song that blends a soulful rock style with a hint of the signature Bond spy music. Here's a terrific setting for jazz ensemble that features either a tenor sax or vocal soloist.

The vocal solo takes away from the rest of the band.

      I think that's what a solo is.

+Golly McOxbig I like your wording; it's very fluent. I'm glad I get to be the moron here.

I think for a piece like this, the vocal solo should be replaced with a low brass or tenor solo, i feel it will sound better.

    I actually like it.
My band and I played it a few years ago and we had a great singer and the piece sounded truly beautiful.
I also think that the band in this video did quite a good job with that performance, although (excuse me) I think that our first trumpet player was better, as was our singer (imp she's just the best!!).
Still, I like the piece as well as I like how this band performed it.
Just because it's jazz it doesn't have to have complex rhythms or be upbeat or anything like that.
As far as I see it, the difficulty of this piece is not to just PLAY it but rather HOW to play it.
And even if you don't agree with me and think "That guy has no conception of good music" - Trust me, I do and I know exactly what I'm talking about.

I am puzzled as well! She sings completely different things sometimes, compared to what's in the score - for example, the very beginning is one beats late. Tons of autotune, too.

boring song, and the vocalist is out of tune. Not happy our bigband wants to play this.

      P. Petroeska We played it and everyone liked it, but you have to play it a bit slower. I played the first trumpet, holy shit, this was the hardest thing I've ever played in my 6 years.

Try anything of the bigband of Maynard Ferguson, that's something else!

Skarablade If you drag it even more, there's nothing left. For a drummer this piece sucks! (no tempo, no swing!)

Funny, our drummer managed to make this piece. We had a better vocalist, but our drummer was the star of the piece. Then again, we definitely swung it. It’s definitely better if you make it swing.
