    I never realized just how subversive and adult Pippin really is

      Yeah the entire musical is just one big existential crisis. The leading player is his psyche, and the climax is him contemplating suicide.
      This show is so deep and underrated

      This is actually really tame, compared to the original production.

      This number was Bob Fosse big number. In the movie All That Jazz the Take off With Us number is supposed to be referencing this number. Basically how sleeping around with everyone in the end is unfulfilling.

    Matthew James Thomas really sings this exceptionally well on the studio recording, without all the interruptions lol. I can sing myself but not all those floating high notes with the crispness he does.

    this song could stand up as a love song without the extra "stuff" but in context of the show stephen Schwartz used it as a bit comic relief

    Thank you for all your Pippin videos. I'd love to see even more of Thomas's performance, of course, but I'm grateful for what I can see, here on your channel.

    I used to sing this song to audition for all of my school musicals because I loved it so much. I didn’t know until way later that it was kind of an orgy scene. Imagine being 17 and hearing your Director tell your whole class that it was a scene about sex pretty much. Oh well. I always made it into the musical though!

    I don't know how I feel about the comedy. I mean it is funny and contextually makes sense...but good lord I love this song and wish it wasn't interrupted with squeals and giggles. But perhaps that's what an album is for versus watching the progression of story onstage.

    • @winston.sullivan
      @winston.sullivan 5 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      I know what you mean. I've always thought the song was so beautiful on its own. But I think the original intention of the show was to juxtapose his romantic notions with the circus of casual sex.

      @SoulShines4U 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @defy grav - You hit the nail on the head *exactly*. You want to enjoy the music (maybe sing along in the car or shower 😉), you buy the cast album. You want to be thoroughly entertained and see a great show, you watch a live performance. Easy peasy. 🤷‍♀️ lol

    Seriously None of this happens on the cast recording.

    I like the original better because I feel it captures the "pastoral" aspect of sex that they were talking about. In this version, especially part 3 (when they bring out the cage) it loses its tastefulness.

      I’m not impressed by anything in this production. Fosse’s was the best! His ran for 5 years, this ran for 3 while the revival of Chicago is still running. Hmmm?

    • @re-huvane5622
      @re-huvane5622 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Also, the whole Circus theme is unoriginal. Goodspeed opera house did it before them almost a decade ago. And there have been female leading players. It’s just a production to stroke Schwartz ego.

    • @justinnaniong7872
      @justinnaniong7872 5 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @Re-hu Vane What's your point bringing up the Chicago revival? It has about as much of Fosse's original choreo as this revival does. Ann Reinking and Chet Walker were both Fosse-trained proteges and had roles in the original productions of the revivals they choreographed. Hmmm?

  • @christinewerlein3510
    @christinewerlein3510 8 ปีที่แล้ว +13

    This is so lame compared to the original William Katt production directed by Fosse. This choreographer ripped some of the dance straight from that original number! There is only one Fosse, and this guy ain't him.

    • @ZoraTheberge
      @ZoraTheberge 7 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Christine Werlein pretty much any time you do a revival of a fosse show, you do the original choreo. Think Chicago. Or the Chorus line revival they used the Og Michael Bennett work because its iconic

    • @christinewerlein3510
      @christinewerlein3510 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Zach T not necessarily. For the Chicago revival in the 90s, Ann Reinking did her own choreography in his style--the only piece they used that had Fosse's original choreography was the Hot Honey Rag. And Rob Marshall did his own choreography for the film version of Chicago--none of Fosse's original work was used. Using his style and signature moves is fine--but straight up ripping him sections of his work and passing it off as one's own is not good.

    • @ZoraTheberge
      @ZoraTheberge 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Christine Werlein what about what Andy Blankenbuehler is doing with Cats? He's taking Gillian Lynne's work and reinterpreting it. There's no secret about it. And what Casey Nicholaw did with Dreamgirls in London. It's
      Almost the same as the original production (and they say inspired by Michael Bennet's work on the poster) it's totally fine by me if the production is upfront about reinterpretation

    • @ZoraTheberge
      @ZoraTheberge 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Christine Werlein the Chicago movie didn't use the original because it wouldn't film well. And they even said "inspired by Bob Fosse" This production said it's Fosse. Some numbers are straight up the original and some are reinterpreted to suit the circus setting or theme
