    In all my years of gaming I have painted exactly zero minis.
    The current quality level of the Catalyst minis is soooo far above my memory of what we had before... Now I want to.
    Then I see a positive review of the intro paint kit Catalyst just out. And figure 'aight... Get the kit, find a good TH-cam tutorial and take a crack at it'
    Good tutorial located. Thank you.

    You know, it's a great idea to do the silver joint parts in the very first step. I always used to mess up the painted parts around the hard-to-reach parts of the joints and whatnot.

    Thank you for this video, I really like miniature painting videos that give a start for those getting into the hobby. Great narration, it's good to know what you're thinking in the process of painting. The only thing I could ask for would be more cut edits to what your miniature looks like at the various stages so new people can see what your looking to accomplish and where they "should" be at that point of the video. think a close up turntable shot at various points.
    All in all, thanks for the video and I can't wait to see more.

    The only thing I would change about the video would be a close up photo after each color. Either way, I appreciate your efforts here.

    Priming in white would cut down on the coats you need. Do you not put a clear coat on your minis?

    • @KevinPeterstheRyan
      @KevinPeterstheRyan 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey, thx for the comments.
      I do not clear coat. I find the Game Color line has some resilience to handling, and haven’t found the need for it yet.
      As far as priming, I now use mostly light grey. It does work better for red and warmer colors, although I still require 2 coats minimum.

  • @septimus64

    My normal prep method is to prime black then dry brush white then start base colors

    • @DeathfromAboveWargaming
      @DeathfromAboveWargaming  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Interesting! I have never tried that!

    • @locarno24
      @locarno24 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Another trick is black prime then a second lighter grey prime just from above. Adds a sort of pre-highlight you can see in the base colour if you don't put it on too thick.

    As a super noob to the whole arena of mech painting, what paintbrushes are needed to get a good start on things? I'm assuming the $1 dozen from Wally's World isn't going to cut it, but not sure exactly what type are needed to produce all of the awesome paint jobs out there.

    • @DeathfromAboveWargaming
      @DeathfromAboveWargaming  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the question... I use XEM brushes which can be found on amazon. Good starter brushes. Of course you can go up from there if you want!

  • @Fyrwulf
    @Fyrwulf 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I don't get these comments about priming in white or black. Your primer color is dictated by your base color. If it's red, as in this case, a yellow primer/sealer makes reds pop more. You typically use red under black to keep the black from looking milky/hazy.

    • @DeathfromAboveWargaming
      @DeathfromAboveWargaming  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Generally agree - half the mech is white, though, so a white primer would have required less coats of white. White on a yellow primer would not have worked out, I don’t think.

    • @Fyrwulf
      @Fyrwulf 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DeathfromAboveWargaming It would have looked like whole milk, even if you used a lot of white. It's quite possibly the worst color to paint, because there's zero margin for error. Even candies are more forgiving.

    Hi. Nice Video. I got a question regarding Chapter 3. Do you paint the entire mech with metallic coat including the wind shields or do you ignore some spots so you can apply a different coat later? Thank you for your time!

    • @KevinPeterstheRyan
      @KevinPeterstheRyan 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      FirionDarklight I only try to brush the metallic (or any color) where I want it to be, but knowing that I have future base coats coming, at least for the non-metallics, I can be a little sloppy with first pass coats. This assumes you are applying in very light coats.

    you should use washes to bring the details back out after you get your base coats laid out

    • @KevinPeterstheRyan
      @KevinPeterstheRyan 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I did, chapter 7, but it’s via black washes. Unless my base coats are very light, the color washes don’t give me enough pop. I have been tempted to try these magical GW contrast paints, but probably when I get my mass quantities of Kickstarter models to paint.

    • @TheCADDGUY
      @TheCADDGUY 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@KevinPeterstheRyan I have had great success with GWs washes
      I haven't tried their contrast paints - but the usual effect it gives makes me NOT want to use them

    I did my first painting today, ended very badly. For various reasons, grey primer with white base, Coats were too thick, no wet palette among other things.

    Vallejo makes amazing washes and metallics, as well as a few solid colors of tried, I only tried Walmart cheap paints and citadel and Vallejo, they are actually all pretty good, citadel over all is best, except their browns... their browns and whites and reds are crappy, they still work, but work crappilyapplely
