This channel is an inspiration. I’m now setting up my garage as a workshop to look like yours! Of course, a wee bit smaller. I’m just starting in handtool woodworking and am about to make perhaps the most essential tool of all: the workbench. I notice your benches are English workbenches and that’s the type I want to make. But I have a couple of questions: hoe come no holdfast holes in the apron or top? Also, I have a cast iron quick release vise I’m going to use. Some advise that the rear jaw should be mortised behind the apron so as to clamp pieces to the apron. Others strongly believe that the rear jaw should be installed proud of the apron so as to facilitate handling of the pieces and using sash clamps in the vise as workholding devises. What would you recommend?

Good question, Yannis. I am particularly interested in the answer to whether the vise should be proud of the apron or not.

How about a tool chest just for this minimum set? Good series.

Minimalistic Woodworking has a charm of its own. We all resent those folks who can afford to buy whatever they want but in truth, they are often miserable personalities not worthy of emulation……
