Thank Vito for the thorough explanation of the Key lock assembly. They are great cars. I have a w116 sd and a w115 240D. I drive 42 miles a day and have never been stranded in either car. I religiously change the oil every 3000. They just keep going.
Excellent work done, vito!!!:) if you were here, i will open a car work shop for you, just to fix and maintain OLD Mercedes..we are really short of talented young mechanics like you here..:(
The key on my '82 300D worked fine, then a month or so ago, I tried to start it and the key would not turn. Steering wheel is locked and I can't do anything. I've tried everything and still no luck. So, I guess I'm going to have to drill it out. I tried my spare key and it won't work either. I may go to the dealer and buy a new key before I drill it, but man.... I agree with you, replace the whole thing before this happens. It's a real pain in the rump!
You have to catch them early. Don’t give up yet and try to spray ATF inside the tumbler. Wiggle it and try to turn at the same time. It should turn eventually. But you need patience
You have to drill out the pin on the whole steering lock assembly. The pin is very small and located between the black steering column and the lock assembly itself. Look for the clamp above the kick panel and you’ll see the pin there too. Long story short, you’ll need a new steering lock assembly, ignition tumbler and key as well as the black metal surround for the tumbler

mine just started a head gasket leak and my father told me to scrap my baby! hell NO! i can't get rid of my 85 w123. It runs amazing. i love this car to death. i will just get the head gasket replaced.
Never ever scrap these amazing cars. I'm currently restoring my W123 240D that's been so neglected.. I'm also restoring my W126 300SD. They're amazing cars. It just makes me so upset when people throw them away like that... Everything is fixable, it's how you put you mind set towards it, that's all! Anyways, big respect to you for giving your baby another life!
Does the key come out? Is it the correct key for the ignition? You can try to spray ATF in the cylinder and wiggle the key back and forth. It might budge loose. If not, then check out my video on how I saved a beige W126 almost 2 years ago. It was sitting for 10 years because of lost keys. I drilled out the old ignition lock assembly
@@VITOSGARAGE i will watch your video now...So the key is stuck halfway turned Jammed i dont know if its the correct key and the steering is locked tommorow i will try everything !!!Free 300D!!!

How do you replace the cylinder when the key won't turn in order for you to find the two holes to pop it out
