I am trapped in Embassy Gardens. I paid £830k for my apartment and it failed fire regulations. I can’t sell, I can’t remortgage, and I’m going to be liable for massive remedial costs. Why am I footing the costs when I don’t own the building? Why am I footing the bill when the freeholder has demised control of external buildings features, such as balconies and winter gardens?

The gov must allocate funds to support people's mental health. Living in these buildings makes sleeping soundly at night impossible and causes severe anxiety and nervousness. All Londoners are suffering from PTSD from Grenfell. The Gov must act to protect and safeguard people's mental health and support them whilst the cladding is removed. #LoveLondon

    • @oliverhopkins8074

No.. they should get the cladding costs covered, but mental health is subjective.
      My building has cladding.
I'm frustrated beyond belief but it's not the taxpayers responsibility to make sure I'm not sad / anxious.
      That falls on me.
But the cost of removal and repair is another matter and some people should go to jail for this.

The terrible Grenfell tragedy happened because the authorities weren't listening to very concerned residents who knew of significant problems.
However, for people suffering from anxiety from fire,..there's no more risk of fire living in a tower block than anywhere else. I live in a tower block, .. have a look at fire deaths in tower blocks, you will see theres much more risk going about everyday life.. and same as living in normal house.
I don't see reassuring messages, i just see media panic and scaring of people in blocks.

This is truly a National scandal of epic proportions. While Leaseholders, who are being subjected to the most appalling treatment, of properties deemed to be unsafe until a EWS 1 certificate can be produced to prove a building is "safe",all those involved in the construction industry who have created these unsafe buildings simply wash their hands of any responsibility whatsoever and, certainly in the case of building contractors and aluminium combustible cladding manufacterers, enjoy vast profits from their shoddy enterprise. The Government can and must intervene to ensure those responsible are brought before the courts and prosecuted where appropriate while Leaseholders MUST NOT be required to pay ANY of the remediation costs. This is a cost that must properly and assuredly rest with architects, building developers, building contractors, and aluminium combustible cladding material manufacturers across the entire building industry whether directly involved in the design and construction of unsafe buildings or not.
Full credit and thanks to Phil Spencer for this most informative vlog. This is one petition I will gladly put my signature to.

I encourage you to have a look at the trail of events. In 1986, the Conservative government removed a rule requiring external wall systems to have a minimum of 1 hour of fire resistance. In the early 2000s, the government moved the responsibility for fire inspections/surveys from the impartial fire brigades to freeholders & private companies. Post Grenfell, the developers have TRIPLED their donations to the Conservative party, going from 7.9% of total donations to 25%. In addition, there are also deep personal ties with the Conservative Government - William Astor of Adriatic Land (one of the worst cladding freeholders), is the brother-in-law of David Cameron. The leaseholders bought these flats having done all the due diligence required by the government and trusting that their government and builder did THEIR jobs properly. The leaseholders did not deregulate the industry nor did they certify this flammable cladding as safe. They did not make massive profits by installing this cheap option. They did not sign off on it as safe when, in many cases, it seems that the developers and private inspectors knew it was not (Grenfell). Now, leaseholders are being hit on all fronts. They have a waking watch that costs hundreds of pounds per month and insurance premiums that have skyrocketed by many hundred percent. Even in cases of shared ownership, they’re responsible for paying 100% of these costs. If they can’t pay an extra 1000 monthly (or whatever the amount is) for the waking watch and the insurance premiums, their flat gets repossessed. Leaseholders are unable to sell their flat because the flats get an automatic zero valuation by the lenders because it has a B2 rating. The only alternative then becomes bankruptcy (can’t pay off remaining mortgage on a flat that can’t be sold) and often homelessness. Many of the developers are making record profits - Redrow for example, made over £1bn last year and paid their CEO approximately £80m - yet they refuse to fix the buildings they built and watch as many of their buyers declare bankruptcy. Further, these same developers already get a huge handout from taxpayers by way of the Help to Buy scheme - this scheme is responsible for almost half of Persimmon’s total sales, for example.
In this chain of culpability, I cannot see any place for the leaseholders, but I do see a lot of links with government, developers, etc.

I really appreciate you made this video, we all bought our property in good faith in the governments country that the Government and the banks wanted us and advertised us to do so they can make big profits long term on the mortgage loan. Has anyone mentioned if the properties are deemed £0 value. why we paying council tax.

Very informative video Phil. It is a massive tragedy what is happening with this right now. Absolutely massive. And yet it is almost brushed under the carpet by the government. The lenders are being unreasonable and the insurers are looking like they won the jackpot. Will definitely join and follow the campaign. Let's hope for some real and positive changes.

The Government deemed all these cladding covered buildings as safe through EU regulations. Therefore, it is the government’s responsibility to pay for all remedial costs, not innocent leaseholders. It is outrageous for leaseholders to have to pay for the governments mistake. Here’s a similar example of the government’s incompetence, although on a different subject:
The government approved of the use of PIP breast implants and they were given EU kite approval. In 2011-2012 a scandal broke. PIP implants were found to contain substandard silicone. Instead of being made from medical grade silicone, they were made from mattress and industrial silicone! Yep you read that right. Anyway, the government eventually accepted responsibility and agreed to pay for these faulty implants to be removed but not replaced. Those who had paid for their implants by credit were able to receive full refunds under section 25. At the end of the day, had the government not approved of these faulty breast implants, nobody would have gotten them. Similarly, had the government not approved of these substandard robust claddings, nobody would have purchased the flats. Therefore, it is the governments responsibility to pay for all remedial works not the leaseholders.

After the govt.'s decision it's actually shocking, despite the clear unjust nature of it all. All this on the backdrop of the Grenfell fire. We need to continue to push for a change, and the govt. to justify their reasons for giving the burden to the homeowners, and not the construction industry.

VW paid compensation for their emissions scandal, why does the tax payer have to pay for these builders' mistakes? The government needs to chase these builders to justice #endourcladdingscandal
