  • Sorry for the crap video, doing the project was more interesting than it looks, I promise!
As I understand it the spark discharge is so fast that the electron flow/movement causes a Electromagnetic wave to be radiated by the Dipole antenna. This is picked up by a corresponding dipole which converts it back to some current to trigger the base of the transistor which then allows the coin cell to flash the LED.
I built this in an attempt to better understand RF. It is a direct copy of projects I saw on TH-cam. Credit goes to :Technical Premier and R.U.H.
    Do I understand RF now?
    No.

For all the people saying this is illegal ..Your phone charger îs producing hundred of times more rf in the medium wave than this ..This is just a safe demo of a transmiter 😂

On a philosophical note... If science and learning were to stop every time a law was enacted we would be in a very dark place. Of course I don't want people to be hurt but conversely risks need to be taken to move things forward.

At that distance it's probably just electric field coupling to the receiver.

Tell me more, you think it's not a RF pulse at all? So just induction rather than reception as it were?

@@Robertwclarke there's a few kV there. electric field would be very strong. the receiver antenna could even be in the corona. is the transistor 'shafted'
build a cohere detector like marconi with filings in a tube. that set up would work 100metres.
      🙂

Wowzers I'll certainly look into that. Sounds really interesting. If I have success I'll post a little vid. Thanks so much for the suggestion 🙂

Wouldn't it be beneficial to put an inductor across the dipole to make a tank circuit?
Need to tune it properly, though. The piezo sparker has a capacitance, so the inductor needs to be chosen accordingly to match the resonance frequency of the dipole.
I guess you could get the "click" heard far away that way :)

Nice video but its very illegal to use these. Jail time illegal. they are broadband transmitters that transmit across ALL frequencies and can interfere with pacemakers.

Broad band maybe but very very low power. I don't think I have to worry about it causing any problems. Thanks for the comment anyhoo

I’m honestly not sure if that would apply to such a brief pulse with low repetition rate.
It might be considered to not be enough of an interference source (same as TIG HF start, brushed DC motors, and piezo sparkers without added antennas.)
Or it might be banned but it would be hard to trace the source of 3 2nsec emissions done over a 3 second period.

This is literally a spark starter from a gas grill. If this was truly illegal then I wouldn't be able to buy them by the dozen from the hardware store.

@@ennexthefox exactly. The leads on a gas grill emit pretty much the same amount of interference.
The “click” signal can probably be heard (or at least detected with the right instrument) over a significant area but it’s not going to interfere with communication.
