      He has a great advice, though. When I was student many years ago, during boring lectures, I used to draw various shapes, mazes, characters, fancy curves, arrows, etc. Had I knew hieroglyphs, I would have practiced and made some ornaments in my notebooks ;) It is an interesting language and the vulture is a great start for the alphabet ;)

    Ancient Hieroglyphics is a language comprised of symbols to help bring together the different languages of what the people spoke at that time. It was used to eliminate the chaos of confusion and the different understandings and comprehensions. I would say it acted like bridges to help bring everyone together.🖤❤💛🤍💙

    Ok so it says: "Shine sun sky or rise sun sky", here's my perception of it, the opener could be "they" instead of "the", also the "shine" could be a verb making it "They rise sun in sky" or "They shine sun in sky". Is this an actual hieroglyph by the way?

    So, where did the information of what sounds the hieroglyphs represent come from when the civilization and language were dead for over a thousand years?

    • @TheGreatCourses
      @TheGreatCourses  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Jo, As is addressed in the course, it all starts with the Rosetta Stone. When the Rosetta Stone was discovered, everyone thought the code would be cracked quickly, but it wasn’t. It took more than 20 years before someone would finally be able to read the ancient Egyptian inscription. Everyone had been making the Big Mistake, assuming that the language was primarily ideographic. Even as Thomas Young and the French historian Jean-François Champollion were figuring out the alphabet, they both made that mistake. Today we will see how Champollion made the big breakthrough and became the first man in 2,000 years to read hieroglyphs. He realized the language was very similar to Coptic and built phonetically from there. What we’re pronouncing is based on the Coptic language, so it's not exactly what ancient Egyptian would have sounded like, but we can hypothesize it is close.

    • @yafolksnemjo4267
      @yafolksnemjo4267 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheGreatCourses I am aware of the sounds of the Coptic language being utilized that's sort of the direction I was going in. Said this (about Coptic) in a comment a few weeks ago with ppl debating over the hieroglyphs and got pounced on in the comments by naysayers. Those who know know.

    • @Xorgrim
      @Xorgrim 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      2 main factors:
      1. Egyptian names written in other languages that had vowels like the peace treaty between Rameses II. and the Hittites. The Hittites wrote in Cuneiform which includes vowels. Part of the diplomatic letters and contracts were found in Hittite sites. (Like the Great courses plus said earlier, it works the other way as well. On the Rosetta stone a Greek name, Ptolemaios, was spelled in Egyptian)
      2. The latest and still surviving descendend of the ancient Egyptian language is spoken by the Egytian Christian Minority, The Copts. The Copts use the greek alphabet, which also includes vowels. Jean Francois Champollion studied the Coptic language because he had a hunch that it would help him decipher the Rosetta Stone. He was right about that. CHampollion worked under the assumption that the the circled hieroglyphs on the stone must be something special, and figured them to be the Pharaoh's name. So he tried mapping the greek letters in the Pharaoh's name to hieroglyphs which were encircled. Based on that he tried to identify more words that included the same letters. I believe one of the words, he was able to identify using the Coptic language was the word for sun. Rah in Coptic, if I recall correctly.
      Of course it is more complicated than that, but that's it in a nutshell as far as I remember my University days. :)

      By using the Rosetta stone, which gave the same decree in three languages, hieroglyphic, Demotic and Ancient Greek, archaeologists were able to make incredible leaps in translating the previously untranslatable hieroglyphics.
      The modern day equivalent would be putting on a few episodes of Battlestar Galactica in your native language and subtitles in a second, or vice versa... letting you pair up the words you know with their equivalents.

    Who and How did you came up with the meaning of this drawing as alphabet?

  • @V7avalon
    @V7avalon 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    This is my 1st try at decoding hieroglyphs. The second grouping of this phrase. The eye the sun the arm. What the sun holds. or What is the sun? These are simple pictographs that may have multiple or complex meanings. The first part a young quail the foot a wave length and the sun. (Im not sure how the young quail influences this statement) the foot is traveling, the wave is that or rays and the sun. The traveling ray's of the sun. So far it seems to me they are explaining what sunshine is and not the simple statement the sun is shining in the sky. The half circle over your "sky" represents an equal division of it like day as opposed to night. I'm just saying your alphabet seems kinda weak. These people were smarter than you give them credit for.

      This was my 1st 'lesson' and I, like yourself immediately began to feel something's 'wrong' with what I'm being told. Admittedly this is instinctive to me and proves nothing, but collectively instinct becomes intuition and this is where we are now. For no other reason than to keep this brief I'll skip right to my wanting to reply to your post. When decoding this time I need you to make the assumption they're describing how the sun stopped shining completely, it went away. Does this help any?

    sir you need to include berber in it and he'll tell you how exactly to pronounce it and put the right vowels in their places wuban irah im p(f)at, translate " the light rises" which means it is sunny. in berber we say ivan for w b n , you can say iw ban or contract it to wban. ban or van, in berber means rise, appear, clear

      @gandolph999 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      This is interesting but the written language does not explicitly provide a vowel in wbn.

    • @TheGreatCourses
      @TheGreatCourses  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Egyptian hieroglyphs could have been written any way: right to left, left to right, down to up, or up to down. The key is to note how the characters are facing to see which way the scribe intended it to be read.

    As all Alpha Bets are read right to left up to Phonecian and Hebrew, the change seemed to be left to right after this point in space.
    Therefore Kemetic Demotic right to left reading, shouldn't this read. "Sky in Sun Shine".
    'shine sun in sky' read right t left.
