The O vowel does apply to trumpets, and it's considered masterful to be able to play in the upper register with that technique. I do see what you are saying though, it is a useful technique to get a feel for what the note should be. From there, cleaning it with a progressive O vowel will lead to some beautiful upper register playing. Great video!
What the hell did I just watch? This is DOPE, thanks for the tips. And you are the best high note player I have ever heard, with definitely the best double c EVER. i can't believe you're only 19 dude. subbed.
I play on a 3c I agree with you, although I can play usually up to a double G I can play higher other days it's weird. But I played on a lead mouthpiece and it was much easier!
I had my trumpet next to me as I was watching and on the "E not O" tip I just tried it and my range went up by 5 notes instantly. I almost fell out of my chair. lol
I think Blaise said the music is more important than playing high. Very true. If you are playing lead in a band, you may have to play high for much of the time = small mouthpiece, if you are playing supporting parts, say 2nd or 3rd trumpet you need really solid low notes including bottom C and below, then small mouthpieces generally do not do well - thin shaky notes - playing low = larger mouthpiece. Most players find a mouthpiece that suits their established role in their band but some carry two mouthpieces to cover a wider range of possible situations. It is the music that matters. . [BTW Donald Trump is well known in the UK for blowing his own trumpet but you would be unlikely to spot this T shirt in a band over here.]
I have a Vincent Bach for me. Its mostly my first time playing trumpet this year (played before but couldnt hit the notes and quit) so I came here for help. I appreciate all the help! You helped a lot
Current sophomore in a smaller band, I can play the first C above the staff pretty much consistently on a 7c. I'm going to try some of these tips practicing tomorrow, thanks for them.
WHICH TRUMPET MOUTHPIECE IS BEST? CHECK IT OUT th-cam.com/video/2qDY3JTAtpI/w-d-xo.html 🔥🔥🔥 CLARIFICATION: you can play high on a big mouthpiece, though it is WAY more work, and in most cases, not worth the effort. I can play Double C on a toilet bowl, but it will tire you out really fast, and requires a lot more effort. On heavy-lead gigs that last 2+HRS, where nearly everything is above the staff, I use a small mouthpiece; it's the most EFFICIENT tool for the job. For orchestral stuff, I play on a larger mouthpiece, like the rest of you; again, because it's the most PRACTICAL tool for the job, I'd bottom out trying to play Tannhauser on my lead piece, and I'd overwork myself playing Maynard and Goodwin charts for 2+HRS on my orchestral piece. ALL of the pros accept this; they put their EGO aside and use the right equipment for the job, knowing they could be replaced at ANY minute from a bad performance. To avoid that chance, they optimize equipment and minimize the chance they'll screw up and get cut. That's reality. You wouldn't call a Symphony guy a cheater for playing a C trumpet on piece written for Bb just because it's easier to play. At the end of the day, quality of the performance is the only thing that matters. Get over yourselves; accept reality before it's too late. LIKE for visibility. Cheers, BB.
I’m in 8th grade and I’m playing F#s above above the staff on a Bach 5C and I totally agree with you but I think I’ll take the challenge route for a couple years and maybe get an asymmetric to help with register
You can play high on a big mouthpiece.. But it fatigues you quicker. Shallow mouthpieces don't make you player higher, it just makes it more efficient but it does this at the expense of the tone. You really need both types of mouthpieces. Rest of what you said was great!!
Thanks for the video. I have some problems with my embouchure since I had a brace. I am now looking at whether another mouthpiece helps. At the moment I play on a Bach 5C, which I like to play better than a 7C but not yet perfect. Does anyone have a suggestions I might consider?
Back in the early 2000s I would use a Warburton 3SV mouthpiece with a standard 6 backbore. That 3 size rim is the equivalent of a Back 1 1/2 size rim (I got a double teardrop upper lip). It took a lot of work but I was able to murder on the high Cs before I knew it. That C cup swirls the air around in your mouthpiece like a drain, you want a V cup or Semi-V cup in order to easily make those notes come out big.
Hi Blaise, you refer to using a smaller mouthpiece. I imagine there is not a one size fits all necessarily, but without knowing the particulars, what would you say is the best size mouthpiece, generally speaking, for reaching the higher range? Thanks.
Thanks so much! I will try that. Many years ago, I was recommended a Bach 10.5C and while I am very happy with the tone, my range totally sucks, so I will go see what I can find.
Switched from a shilke x3 (very large bore open feel with reverse lead pipe) to standard pipe Wayne Bergeron Yamaha (8335la). Using a GR 65sz as well as occasionally a bobby shew lead. There seems to be a good bit extra resistance to me in 8335la but to some extent it helped extend my endurance (stops lips from intruding mp) with around the same range to around F and dub G. But the shilke has a brighter more open, but perhaps spread, sound. Any thoughts on which one to continue on I progress on tpt or another lead horn. The issue I am having as of now is stopping my lower lip from curling inward as I ascend (downstream player). As a dude in a college section of 70 tpts with a good few drum cops and hardcore music majors playing double Cs every stand tune and ripping solos out of their ass in the show I could use some help from my equipment. Btw love your videos you def get the millennial lead post-Maynard mindset lol.
I play a 7C Bach mouthpiece. I've been playing since 4th grade. I'm in 7th now, and I can play double high C. My friend in 8th grade thinks that is not impressive to him ( he can play double high Bb), but i think it is.
Nick try a 14a4a Yamaha mouthpiece. Also, try not to strain when you play, be relaxed but firm with your embrochure. Plus, think of the word, "wood" when you want the correct embrochure when you play(especially for high notes). Lastly, and this is my opinion, do NOT always rely on equipment to get the job done. Good luck to you my friend.
So...I'm playing B 3C for cornet and trumpet. I dont even know wich way to go for a "smaller" MP. Suggestions? (Im playing concert/brassband - but whant to go big band)
Mouthpieces with smaller diameters sound brassier and larger diameter mouthpieces sound darker. A darker sound is better for concert season which is why most people play on a mouthpiece that is a 7c or lower.
Genuine question though Mr. Bowman (assuming that is your last name no disrespect) what is the point of holding the horn in the fashion you suggests, is it to innately limit pressure by the usage of the hand?
Hey Blaise, so I like my 3c because the tone I get out of it is solid and my range is solid for the most part. If I were to get a smaller mouthpiece wouldn't that be like starting all over again tone wise and range wise? Also if I were in a concert band setting should I use the 3c or whatever higher mouthpiece
No. Small mouthpieces are way better once you adapt. You can actually get a BIGGER sound out of a small (note not shallow) mouthpiece if you learn to play on it properly. The XPiece is the best mouthpiece: th-cam.com/video/2qDY3JTAtpI/w-d-xo.html
Blaise Bowman thanks I saw the xpiece. Id love to get it but I currently don't have a job but I'll probably ask for Christmas and my family isn't the wealthiest. Also define your version of properly and I plan on playing band in college next year and being a music Ed major.
So I’m a little skeptical I’ll try all this for myself I’ve always known the mouthpiece is very much a key part to tone and range but I’ve never attempted to change the shape of my mouth...
Hey can you help me i was using a 17c mouthpiece but i lost it Now im using a 7c mouthpiece but its hard for me to play highnotes now and i get tired easily with a 7c mouthpiece. Thank you in advance
I’m super bad at hitting high notes 😩 The highest I can probably get is the G right above the fifth line on the staff. My trumpet is kinda crap but I’m poor and can’t buy another one. (I’m a sophomore so it’s really bad) :(
Blaise Bowman, I have the same mouthpiece, also Lynn's XPiece and Reversible Rim for training. Even better, Lynn has designed his own professional large bore trumpet, called "LynnZhorn." I stopped over at his place in Vegas last July and spent a lot of hours on the prototype. Unbelievable!! So I ordered one...should be here the second week of July. And you won't believe the cost: only $1,300 plus shipping!! Best horn by a long shot I've ever played. Lynn said the same thing about his own experience on it. Yes, Lynn is definitely the man! He walks the talk. And I could tell by your video that you have been influenced by his mentorship too. Good on you, and best to you.
Awesome man! Is Lynn just as freakishly loud in person? Glad you enjoyed the LynnZhorn! I plan on getting one too. When I saw his email yesterday it was like Christmas morning.
Blaise Bowman Thought I had already replied, but apparently didn't hit the "Really Send It" button. Sorry! Yes, absolutely...Lynn is even more acoustically dynamic in person. His videos do not do his sound justice. He is unreal!! He is an Inhuman! I should be getting my LynnZhorn on Monday. So excited!! It plays like a dream, if the prototype is accurate, and he assures me it is...and even better! Hope you are well.
I'm a junior in highschool who plays lead in my band. I have a schilke 17d4d and I just switched from a parduba 3 1/2 double cup. I can currently hit E above the staff consistently with squeaks on F. am I on the right track? What can I do to improve?
I don't play trumpet for band anymore and every once in a while i will play my friends and about 30 min of warming up i can hit double e(I play baritone and euphonium)
Hey Bowman I stumbled across your channel today and I love it. I was thinking of getting a new mouthpiece and I wanted to ask what do you recommend for mouth piece for jazz?
Most of the things you said was good advice but a good o sound is what makes it sound good. Trumpets are known for their range but high notes aren't everything. If you're main focus is to whale high notes then yeah sure forget the o sound but if you want a good range with good sound then don't forget the o sound
But.. in order to pronounce the "C" you need to touch the hard palate with your tongue... I tried and it sounded terrible... am I doing it wrong? I can play high C with a 3c and the throat open though... but I get tired really fast
Hey so I'm literally just beginning, I just picked up a trumpet, and like, I can't even play a B on the scale. Is there any tips anyone can give to me to higher my range for notes on the scale?
Blaise Bowman I feel you. It's just that people tell me I try to hard to play...and It's. The funny thing is...when I pick up the horn and just play sort of randomly, some super high shit comes out. I'm just like..."Why the fuck can't I achieve these anyother time!?" Would you happen to have suggestions for this?
Do these tips work for mellophone too??? I've been wondering since I'm in The Campbell County marching band of pride and there are some really high notes er play and if there are any tips for mellophone

Glad to help!
Current sophomore in a smaller band, I can play the first C above the staff pretty much consistently on a 7c. I'm going to try some of these tips practicing tomorrow, thanks for them.
That's pretty good for a sophomore. Keep it up dude!
I've switched from a Bach 3C to a LOUD 3Z & for strict lead a Schilke 6A4. went from Es to Double C in a month and a half!
So if you want to play high, you should get a smaller mouthpiece? I have a 3C, which should I get to help improve my range?

so basically, i have to be a snake to play high notes.. wonderful, nothing new to me about being a snake! you helped a lot bud.

Yeah, like I said, switch between mouthpieces when necessary. It's like playing golf with only a driver, you wouldn't putt with a driver

I actually named my trumpet “Donald Trumpet”
Jacob Jernigan lolllll me to I thought I was the only one who said Donald Trumpet until I saw his shirt

I’m 6 years into trumpet and I can get pretty high but for some reason my lips give out if I’ve been playing high notes for too long

depends. do you play in jazz or concert?
Blaise Bowman For now i play in concert but im trying out for jazz band so that i can also be in jazz next year
i'd go with a 7d or 9e
Blaise Bowman Thanks! And also thank you for the quick reply

This guy is hilarious. He really sold that shirt though
Hi Blaise, you refer to using a smaller mouthpiece. I imagine there is not a one size fits all necessarily, but without knowing the particulars, what would you say is the best size mouthpiece, generally speaking, for reaching the higher range? Thanks.
the smallest "i-d" mouthpiece you can play, then learn to get a good sound out of it. anyone who says otherwise is delusional.
Thanks for your response. Forgive my ignorance, but what do you mean by "i-d"?
inner diameter
Thanks so much! I will try that. Many years ago, I was recommended a Bach 10.5C and while I am very happy with the tone, my range totally sucks, so I will go see what I can find.

I'm a senior in highschool and I can play a high E comfortably. I play on a lead Schilke 6A4a. Is this a good place to be in for a highschooler?
YOU HAVE A TRUMPET TRUMP SHIRT that made my day. Thanks for the great video by the way!

I play a Bach Strad Model 37, on a 5C. I can hit high C and barely D... what mouthpiece should I get to improve my range?
Nick try a 14a4a Yamaha mouthpiece. Also, try not to strain when you play, be relaxed but firm with your embrochure. Plus, think of the word, "wood" when you want the correct embrochure when you play(especially for high notes). Lastly, and this is my opinion, do NOT always rely on equipment to get the job done. hey Blaise what mouthpiece would you prefer to get up in the higher register?
for stock mouthpieces, a schilke 8a4
So...I'm playing B 3C for cornet and trumpet. I dont even know wich way to go for a "smaller" MP. Suggestions? (Im playing concert/brassband - but whant to go big band)
i'd go with a schilke 8a4
OMFG you are a genius, I fixed my playing just by hissing
what size mouthpiece do you recommend using?
I pay on a Bach 1-1/2c, 3c, 5b, 2-1/2c and a shilke 8A4A I can play triple G on all of them. However the Schilke makes is so much easier.
Mouthpieces with smaller diameters sound brassier and larger diameter mouthpieces sound darker. A darker sound is better for concert season which is why most people play on a mouthpiece that is a 7c or lower.
I can play G above C above the stave on a 1C Bach mouthpiece. How high do you think I can play on a smaller mouthpiece?
Hi! what mouthpiece would you recommend me? To play high notes
The XPiece, it's the world's best mouthpiece: th-cam.com/video/2qDY3JTAtpI/w-d-xo.html :)
What mouthpiece should I use for high notes
Actually, I made a video on that today: th-cam.com/video/2qDY3JTAtpI/w-d-xo.html
Blaise Bowman thank you, this is really helpful
Kelly screamer
Jet tone...
Xpiece mouth piece by Lynn Nicholson will have you moving in the right direction!
Genuine question though Mr. Bowman (assuming that is your last name no disrespect) what is the point of holding the horn in the fashion you suggests, is it to innately limit pressure by the usage of the hand?
Yes, it limits pressure, and over time it slightly raises horn angle, helping projection lol
really you rocked.i also play trumpet and i am 13 years old indian boy and i love your breathing power
My lead students are playing on Bach 10 1/2 C's. What is your opinion of those?
they're decent. though, i'd recommend something a little more comfortable rim-wise. bachs tend to have a sharp bite.
Cool! Any suggestions?
i like schilkes
Hey Blaise, so I like my 3c because the tone I get out of it is solid and my range is solid for the most part. If I were to get a smaller mouthpiece wouldn't that be like starting all over again tone wise and range wise? What equipment are you playing on?
What mouthpiece do you recommend?
Last time i played trumpet was in high school. Anything above G5 was difficult for me. The mouth piece tip makes sense
I play on a 3CW. Does that affect the high notes or what can you recommend? Blaise Bowman
So is a 5c bad for high notes? And will I need to play that high for high school band?
So I’m a little skeptical I’ll try all this for myself I’ve always known the mouthpiece is very much a key part to tone and range but I’ve never attempted to change the shape of my mouth...
Hey can you help me i was using a 17c mouthpiece but i lost it

I’m super bad at hitting high notes 😩 The highest I can probably get is the G right above the fifth line on the staff. My trumpet is kinda crap but I’m poor and can’t buy another one. (I’m a sophomore so it’s really bad) :(
I play on a GR mouthpiece that is about the same size as a bach 3C and My trumpet is a Cannonball 789RL
So what size mouthpiece are we supposed to use?
What mouth piece so you recommend????
I have a 7c is that bad for playing high?
Nice "Nicholson Personal" mouthpiece. Looks like a Jet-tone, but with the one ring instead of two. Am I right?
Nice eye! Sanded down the rim and opened the throat. Lynn is the man!
Sorry for sounding dumb but what's the actual difference between like a 7c and a 3c mouthpiece
Angelo Ortiz put the. Side by side and youll know
3c is less deep I think
I'm a junior in highschool who plays lead in my band. I have a schilke 17d4d and I just switched from a parduba 3 1/2 double cup. I can currently hit E above the staff consistently with squeaks on F. am I on the right track? What can I do to improve?
compress the air and relax the chops
Blaise Bowman Will do.
Strangely I've seen more than 1 video from you, and yet I'm a first woodwind. But yet I kinda love the videos.
What valves do you have?
Come on now Arturo was holding a cigar 😂😂😂😂
is there a sweater version???
Yes: www.unclesamsstreetwear.com/collections/sweaters/products/donald-trumpet-sweatshirt
I have a Vincent Bach 6C is that the right mouth peace
really you rocked dude .you are awesome and i am indian trumpeter .a 13 years old boy
The only reason I can't play high is because I literally just started last year but the highest note I can play is a Bb above the staff
also I don't know what my mouthpiece is 😂
that's pretty good! keep it up man.
same
I don't play trumpet for band anymore and every once in a while i will play my friends and about 30 min of warming up i can hit double e(I play baritone and euphonium)
DAMN man. The highest note I can play is F, (line F, not the one on the space, that would be sad.) and I started in August.
What size of a mouthpiece should I get to play high notes
I put the mouthpiece closet to the bottom or the top and it works for me
I love that pic of Arturo playing the trumpet while holding a cigar! Classy!
Were u get that shirt?
Hey Bowman I stumbled across your channel today and I love it. I was thinking of getting a new mouthpiece and I wanted to ask what do you recommend for mouth piece for jazz?
thanks! what do you currently play on?
Blaise Bowman a 3c
bach 9d or schilke 10b4
Thanks
no, 3e is def an improvement over a 3c.
Does it work if I smome pot first?
Most of the things you said was good advice but a good o sound is what makes it sound good. Trumpets are known for their range but high notes aren't everything. If you're main focus is to whale high notes then yeah sure forget the o sound but if you want a good range with good sound then don't forget the o sound
holy crap that E thing has unlocked so many possibilities for me, thanks
Interesting
thank you my fren. cheers
Is this chip approved ?
is this same for cornet
what inside diameter for a mouthpiece do you recommend?
it depends on your lip size. i roll with .619"
But.. in order to pronounce the "C" you need to touch the hard palate with your tongue... I tried and it sounded terrible... am I doing it wrong?
I can play high C with a 3c and the throat open though... but I get tired really fast
No you don't, the back of the tongue should stay down. The tip should come up and forward.
Hey so I'm literally just beginning, I just picked up a trumpet, and like, I can't even play a B on the scale. Is there any tips anyone can give to me to higher my range for notes on the scale?
I play on a bach 3c what should i use instead?
You saved my future as a trumpet player thank you
But Blaze, what if you dont have a tense embouchure, but tense shoulders?
workout your shoulders before hand so you can't make them tense lol
Blaise Bowman I feel you. It's just that people tell me I try to hard to play...and It's. The funny thing is...when I pick up the horn and just play sort of randomly, some super high shit comes out. I'm just like..."Why the fuck can't I achieve these anyother time!?"
Would you happen to have suggestions for this?
I already play Trombone and Guitar, and I interested in learning trumpet
What about Yamaha 11B4 mouth piece
SSSYMBIAL 547 that's basically a 7c
I play on a 14B4 Yamaha heavy walled gold plated mouthpiece
So what mouthpiece do we use to play high notes
Do these tips work for mellophone too??? I've been wondering since I'm in The Campbell County marching band of pride and there are some really high notes er play and if there are any tips for mellophone
Youre in the marching band!?Cool! I'm in the Fanklin County Marching Band
i play on a 3c i could play my high notes decently , but when i use a shallow mouthpiece it's hard for me becuase its to small for my lips.
Same with me. Changing to a shallow mouthpiece does require practice, since you aren't used to the size moving from a 3c
What is the best mouthpiece to use?
I'm making a video on that soon. Stay tuned bro!
