This is the best rendition of Boris Godunov I’ve ever heard. Surprisingly it’s by von Karajan, though Mussorgsky is traditionally considered to be one of the (if not the) “most Russian” composer ever. Karajan’s depth of feeling and understanding of this music and the whole story is just beyond comprehension. (I’m Russian by the way, and heard a lot of different interpretations of this opera - both recordings and live). Karajan is just a Genius!
