I read A Tree Grows in Brooklyn for the first time last year, and I remember loving the detail about the lives of those beyond Francie herself. It made me think about all the small details about our environment and the people in it that influence the way we develop as people.
A Tree Grows In Brooklyn was one of my favorite books growing up! Smith also wrote Maggie Now. Not quite as strong, but also one I re- read many times!
Great recommendations as always. I am very intrigued by the Virgin Suicides and A tree in Brooklyn. I will put them on my summer TBR. I just read Cloud Cuckoo Land which was a 5 star read for me.
Greetings Angela! This is my first time visiting your channel. I thoroughly enjoyed your presentation of literary fiction. I “had” to read The Great Gatsby in High School. I don’t think I appreciated it at the time. Now that I’m older, I will re-read it. I have an older copy of The Tree Grows in Brooklyn that I inherited from my parents. One of these days I’ll get to it, as it is a classic. I want to read The song of Achilles. I look forward to seeing you again. Thank you.
I really loved A Tree and savored it, trying to make it last as long as possible. I agree with you about the characters I felt for them in their delimas. Thanks for the other ideas, I'm going to read The Great Gatsby in the near future. I always enjoy your videos!
Thanks, Angela, for sharing some of your favourite reads! You’ve added to my TBR list and sparked some re reads, ie: The Great Alone and The Great Gatsby. I loved both of those and I’m looking forward to The Song of Achilles which sounds fascinating!
I really liked This Other Eden. Powerful and heartbreaking. A Tree Grows is an all time favorite. I have read others by Smith and liked them also, but none as much as A Tree 🌳 ❤
These all sound great! I have read some but not others. The ones I have read (Tree, Gatsby to name two) are favorites. I have added the others to my TBR. I have not yet read The Virgin Suicides but if you liked that you should also read Middlesex (also by Eugenides). It made a big impact on me when I read it (a long time ago now, due for a re-read).
I really enjoyed this video, Thank you 😊 Would you say The Virgin Suicides can be triggering to some because of the subject matter? Some of my all time favourite literary novels are Far from the Madding Crowd, To kill a Mockingbird, Pride and Prejudice, The fortnight in September and many more!
It’s hard to say. The melancholy can be palpable but I would think if someone had experience with suicide it probably would be triggering. My experience lately is that reading about experiences I find triggering is helping me through my own traumas but that’s another story entirely 💕

Thanks Angela. I added two of those books to my ever growing TBR list…The Virgin Suicide and The Song of Achilles.

Middlesex is definitely on my TBR!
A great selection of literary fiction. I'd not heard of The Other Eden and will add to my list. Thank you.
It's a wonderful read! Thanks for being here 💕
I’ve also read A Tree Grows in Brooklyn and the Great Gatsby more than once. The Virgin Suicides and This Other Eden sound good to me.
I really enjoyed this video, Thank you 😊
