    Egyptian Wheat Food Plot Screening Cover UPDATE!
    Egyptian wheat can be a great screening option for deer for using to access tree stands and block the view from deer. Screening off food plots also increases day time deer activity and separates doe family groups and also entices more buck activity.

    I think that Egyptian wheat would work really well for planting it around an elevated box blind to kinda hide it during the rifle season. You definitely have the food plot thing figured out Dave!

    Nice stand. Will the turkeys use it come fall and winter? What happens to it in the spring? Do hens utilize it for nesting / brooding cover?
    Let me know 👍

    Damn that egyption wheat is tall. Mine is 1.5 feet tall and thick but I didn't plant until June 28th becausei had to change spots. I'm renting a tiller this Thursday to till up the plot and get the food area planted. Can't wait to see it start growing i am hooked now. That antler grow worked great on the egyptyian wheat and my friends clover plot

      That’s awesome to hear. EW has a slow start. But once it gets rolling it goes pretty quick.

      The nice part is I have the whole plot irrigated. Just watering the ew right now until I plant the rest of it

    Great video. I'm considering some small patches of screening in my ag field conversion to switchgrass so I have some year one bedding and size. Going to put diversity strips in my switch. Thoughts?

    • @Whitetailobsessionoutdoors
      @Whitetailobsessionoutdoors  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It’s a good idea switch grass is typically used for screening you can make switch grass pockets sure for bedding but even in the snow it’s still going to lay down. Once snow melts it will pop back up that’s the good thing.

    I planted it last year for the first time & the deer tore it up. They would stand on their back legs to reach up & get the seeds. I planted it again this year. Checked it about 3 weeks ago & in spots it was 5' tall already. I have some areas along the same strip that aren't growing as well though & I'm not sure why. Only a couple feet tall.

    • @Whitetailobsessionoutdoors
      @Whitetailobsessionoutdoors  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Could just be a nutrient issue or to thick. Are you sure it was EW? They must be pretty hungry to be eating it lol

    • @darralldougherty5388
      @darralldougherty5388 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Whitetailobsessionoutdoors It's not to thick. It's thicker in the areas that are higher. Yes it was EW. Not all of them would eat it. But a few of them sure liked it.

    Hi Dave, I really enjoy your videos, need some of your thought, took a soil sample in may, planted sunhemp to improve the soil also threw some peas with it. I did follow the soil test, sunhemp got about 18 inches high, peas did good, then the weeds took over. Talk to jeff, he said the hemp should be 3 to 4 feet. Took another soil test, it show my ph went from 5.6 to 5.5 what would cause that drop instead of improving,

    • @Whitetailobsessionoutdoors
      @Whitetailobsessionoutdoors  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Wayne hope you are well. What was the PH before you started? How much lime did you use? When did you lime? What kind of lime did you use? What was the CEC of the soil? A little more info I can help ya out

      Dave I have 1/2 acre, first test called for 1200 pds per acre, I put 2 bags of caltrate down, on the bag info saids 4 bags does 1 acre. Put lime and 1/2 fertilizer down, then I used the firminator to disk it in and plant, got 6 to 8 inches high, came back with antler grow and npk. On my first test the cec was 5.9 second test was 8.0 and what does that mean. Organic mater was on first test was 4.6 second test was 4.3

    • @Whitetailobsessionoutdoors
      @Whitetailobsessionoutdoors  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wayne Galyen that would be the issue then. 2 bags isn’t going to do anything man sorry to say. On average it’s always 1 Ton of lime per acre to raise the point by 1. Always. I would buy regular pelletized lime and use that. CEC basically is how much the soil can hold. Compare it like this. A screen door compared to a wooden door. On the screen door everything will run through it. The wooden door will hold everything. The higher the CEC the better. Meaning when adding lime and fertilizer it will stay in the soil for longer periods of time

    Now what about after this EW goes dormant? What is your process after winter do you till it up or just over seed it.

    • @Whitetailobsessionoutdoors
      @Whitetailobsessionoutdoors  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It will go dormant after a few frost but will
      Remain standing for the most part. Here where I am in pa and Maryland it gets me to about January. In the spring I just till it back in

    Hey Dave I planted egyptian wheat on June 29 here in GA. Its roughly 3 feet tall but some sections of it is laying down like the stalk is weak. We have had some heavy rain would this cause it? Thanks for your reply and keep up the videos! Thanks

    • @Whitetailobsessionoutdoors

    • @Whitetailobsessionoutdoors
      @Whitetailobsessionoutdoors  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Man it’s getting pretty late for it. I’d say you might get 4 to 5 feet out of it. Maybe 6 if the soil is perfect. That’s just about your only option for a screen right now.
