As a martial arts student with 10 yrs Wing Chun, 15yrs TKD reaching third dan and now, at 67yrs old a 2nd dan in shotokan I feel I can recognise a very good martial artist when i see one and this guy is very good!
Great to watch this .I took this grading back in 1980 Never took another due to bad injury .Brings back memories of the sound of the crack noise I got from my expensive Tokaido gi.even now at 78 years old I can still make that sound with a block or a punch.
Nice looking dojo. Has a tranquil feel to it. Also seems to be a great place of meditation. That black belt had very crisp and sharp moves. The techniques were explosive but not rushed. Bassai dai and bunkai bassai dai were both very well timed. Nice back stances and front stances. The control on the three kick combination were splendid. I can feel his nerves and see them in his body language. Reminds me of my black belt test on 2/4/20. His moves and precision speak a lot about the quality of his dojo and Sensei. Top notch.
all of his stances were shit. Like, his back foot barely touches the ground. I feel like if I pull him by his hand towards myself, he would fall. Same is for me pushing him sideways. His stances aren't stable. But, overall, it's beautiful. First question is: how consistent he is and how powerful his punches are? Another question is: how good he is at kumite?
Excellent kime and core stability. Just a few points you can improve : your keage is relatively weak, as it does not involve the hip. Look up the way Kagawa does it. And you do the Kekomi the same way whether in combination or alone. In my opinion, when done alone, it should be longer, with the hip turned more in, for more power, similar to the way TKD people do it.
Beautiful dojo !!! Good technique, good power, if your sparring and wood breaking are as good, then respect to you sir. much respect from Andy, (ITF TKD)
1st Kyu here, only thing I noticed was the ude uke's at the end of Bassai Dai we do them slightly different (start with a fist high up with a straight arm) so might be a stylisation thing, but other than that it looked good. I was particularly impressed with the Bassai Dai done in mirror image!
The whole point of kata is to build muscle memory... You don't 'devise' anything.. Your body automatically does it. I have only had two fight where it really kicked in.. I hope to get back into it and feel that again.. Where your body instinctively moves perfectly like you aren't even controlling it and every move is blocked and countered. I did it for 10 years.
I think some commenters are missing the point a bit. This is not a brown belt grading for 1st Dan. It's a black belt demonstrating the syllabus. Good technique here, however the KUGB grading differs quite a bit to this.
Krathor. The fact you are training in a sport centre is irrelevant. You are learning karate. It is the level of instruction that really matters. You know alot of karateka have messed up priorities. Like training and trying to make their gi snap. Focusing on rushing yheir path to Shodan. Forget it and focus on development. Good luck.
is that the participants breathing i can hear? why are you/is he so puffed? your breathing is fine, are you just unfit? other than that great video, amazing dojo, very strong karate.
Just because he didn't do it here doesn't mean he didn't require to and does NOT mean the entire world of Shotokan doesn't do it, nor would that make it easy....
I would say that welldone TKD looks cooler on first glimpse, but i'm doing karate and what i see here is just awesome, speaking of his technique and bodycontrol. Still, i'm sure you'll find teakwondo-practitioners of the same level of skill. So i'd adwise you to try both of them for a short time and see for yourself which one is better fitting for you or better feeling. Depends both on the dojo and its members and on the training. I've been doing karate for 13 years now and just started gracie-jiu-jitsu after a joint training camp. On the other hand, 2 years ago i attended the karateclub at my university (same style, shotokan) for just once and never wanted to go there again. Just looking won't give a satisfying result, i believe.
IngeniusFool i found a great karate class and think im gonna start going to that class even without trying Taekwondo. I really like the teacher and love the group.
Simon0 If you want to practice a martial art to look ''cool'' than don't . Go play some soccer or go skateboarding. We don't want you representing martial arts in that way.
I don't think it was meant as an extra gyakatsuki, more of a reaction hand movement due to keeping with the rhythm and speed, either way it would not be considered a grading fail
I loved the video because it's always useful to see another organization syllabus to compare what other student's are training... the dojo is beautiful. But why is the sensei so out of breath? Was he sick or something? :/
@@paulwatford3197 Glad to know. I'm above average fit, but was worried because I breathe hard after every Kata. Only know the 5 Heian though (just gone to yellow belt, also Shotokan). Nice to see where I'm working towards!
@@ReinierK123 Its also a key part of Kata to breath out on moves hard to avoid being winded if you get hit as you attack. It also adds power to your move by breathing out as you strike or block. So breathing is very important, and excess hard breathing is default for anyone doing it "right". I have done it since I was 8 years old and am now 45. I was out of breath when I did kata at 20. (bit more now but point stands) If you do something like Basia Dai hard all the way through with power, you will hurt. The only thing I would add is all the air punches/kicks do add up over the years and it can damage your joints. Compression patches/straps/lycra on the knees and elbows is not a bad idea..
Karate should be complete control of your body, using ALL of your body, strength on the finish, relaxed all the way to the point of contact when you tighten and hit with all your power locking every part of your body, with your hips, breathing, etc all coming together at the final moment. This constant flow of smooth relaxed movements ending with hard stops requires speed flowing until the point of kimai. This is bloody hard work on the body if you do it right. This guy is very fit to do multiple KATA this well in a row.
1st Dan black belt means master of BASICS. So, a basic Kata should be executed. The heian Kata should always be practiced again and again... No matter how far in your karate journey you are.
El Dojo está espectacular !! Felicidades !! Ahora... el practicante horrible, la conchetería en el Karate Do es de muy mal gusto, el Sr debería dedicarse a otra cosa, está en etapa bisagra.
From that comment i think you may have a few personal issues. What an unpleasant thing to say, a comment that is so low on respect that i think you should devote yourself to self discovery in a vocation where you can pursue a level of respect that won't cause you to embarrass yourself publicly as you have done here. There is a way to conduct oneself, if you are a karateka then you have a long way to go. I hope at some point you will find a way to see the best in people instead of the shameful way you are treating them. Oss!

👍👍
Even I think as black belt 4th dan this guy is pretty good
I have seen many videos on youtube about 1st kyu to 1st dan Black belt and so far, this is the best one.
Great to watch this .I took this grading back in 1980

That dojo is beautiful.
Yep. I trained on a 5 a side court :(
I'd be too embarrassed to drop a sweat, lol.

Hyper Hydreigon I'm proud of you
Grading was excellent and beautiful performance by karate Ka..
Great technique sir, and what a stunning dojo you have!
Nice, I learn a lot from guys like you thanks for sharing. I practice Wado Ryu.

Why break?? all it does is damage your hands and feet...
WOOD BREAKING???????
Wood does not fight back AND it damages your weapons - your body parts.
What a silly comment!
it's a test to see how powerfull your punches are and how technical his moves are. @@childofthe60s100
His technique is flawless...Well deserved
Really like the kicking drill. I feel you can really improve your kick strength and stability.
those stances are perfect

Everything about this is beautiful.
haven't trained since march cause of covid and im 1st kyu since june 2019
Your Karate is beautiful, and so is your dojo.
Excellent performance...real Shotokan Karate-Do...
very sharp. Excellent.
This is the first part only.
the only way to tell how good u really are is by doing competition, when all the stress is on you and you dont have the time to devise this stuff
B.S competitions are pointless
That's BS.
And that shows how little you understand about karate.
The whole point of kata is to build muscle memory... You don't 'devise' anything.. Your body automatically does it. I have only had two fight where it really kicked in.. I like to do kata as right side then left side it helps you to master the content well
3rd Dan at least at that time? Beautiful Dojo btw!
We tend to take the slow moves in the kata a bit more slowly in our club.
Congratulations on such a wonderful Training area /Dojo. Dojo is beautiful. where is it based? ...Osu!
Awesome stuff mate.
He's good and that's a lovely dojo
Extraordinary. Oss 🙏👍.
Excellent! "Liked". Which lineage Shotokan is this?
Excellent
Who is the instructor, i want more videos of him related to all grades belt exam
I think he is the instructor, he's demonstrating the syllabus here
Now thats a dojo! We're stuck with some cold shitty dilapidated community centre.....pfft. And your moves are excellent, fast, snappy and lethal.
Good technique.
The stamina that this takes is insane
in the first dan exam they expect you do the kata from heain shodan to jitte or gankaku
And fight 3 people at once.. And my bloody examiner made me do basai dai backwards..
Good job sensei.
What is the size of your dojo?
dope dojo
Some of the comments here are so critical and judgemental - not in the true spirit of the karate way,
Good
nice, good technique !
Bassai dai and bassai sho.
What is your style?
Lifted the heel a bit there mate ;) good work.
Now THAT'S what I call a dojo.
where is your academy?? how can i contact with you??
Oss, I will go to my dojo now
Nice posture.
This guy is good!

topgearfan72 Unfit? It's very clear he's fit as a bull. This is very hard and tiring. Do you do karate?
I think that's for control the breathing so he doesn't exhausted that fast
Very late but, breathing is something you're supposed to do as you move. Idk why but they want to hear you breathe. That sounds creepy
Breathing is technique ... You should hear breathing. It's called kemae
Super
Oss. Beautiful
video seems to be mirrow inverted?
well done

Kata is very important my friend. Happy training.

Fantastic technique, BUT, Extra gyakuzuki in Bassai Da at 6:18i! Fail!
Uh I didn't see that first! But u are right!
There is no extra gyakuzuki at 6.18? nor should there be?
I saw an Oi zuki, not a gyakutuski, watch Kanazawa do Bassai dai, he does not do a gyakutuski either at the same point.
So i guess we were both kinda wrong then. But thanks for looking it up and at least clearing it up to some extent anyway. :-)
I don't think it was meant as an extra gyakatsuki, more of a reaction hand movement due to keeping with the rhythm and speed, either way it would not be considered a grading fail

It s very difficult’for fisrt dan black belt.
All that effort but no fighting.
Не обращайте внимание, все правильно выполнено, ну додзе ваш прекрасен.
Wrong???? Well you'd better speak to Funakoshi and tell him that mate. Thanks for the lovely comment though.
¡¡oss!!
More combinations are required to make karatedo solid , nice dojo though 👍.
This is an example of a possible grading syllabus to help those to know what to expect. Nothing more.
There are plenty in the katas. It will take lifetime to master those.
fun style
y he wears the black already?
He is a black belt, possibly an instructor demonstrating all the grading syllabus.
ITKF Syllabus?
I loved the video because it's always useful to see another organization syllabus to compare what other student's are training... the dojo is beautiful. But why is the sensei so out of breath? Was he sick or something? :/

Hean Yondan for black belt grading? Seriously?
+Reski Rahab Bassai Dai & any Heian or Tekki Shodan Kata
+Reski Rahab that's actually heian godan
Don't underestimate Heian katas. When I went for my blackbelt, I was tested on everything even basic things.
