I'm always out of sync - 30 years behind (or ahead) of the trends. About 25 years ago, I started converting my 5 piece Tama Rockstar kit to acrylic shells, made by the same people who made them for Ludwig and many others. By the time I was done, it was a 7 piece kit, using Remo Pinstripes at the time, along with a custom 14x7 inch shell snare drum. Man, they were LOUD and BRIGHT! Eventually, I put Evans Hydraulic heads on all the batter heads, and it sounded more like the DW sound. When I got close to retirement, I sold them off, but dang, I miss them. And the acrylics look so good! Nothing Like 'em!
Ive been playing a Mirage kit from Tama for about 6 years. Sound guys love them and I must say, they are durable and stay in tune. Weather does not mess with them either, and they are great to gig at fairs and festivals. Great option when I want to leave the Sonors at home.
Amazing kit for an amazing drummer. I saw him with Joe Satriani at G3 recently. The spacing between his rack toms still throws me for a loop. If it works for him it works for him.
Ah the Jackie & Diane break. Epic. I used to have the Vista's from way back (Early 80's). Got the DW in Smoke (Sweetwater version) 2 yrs ago (They are great). And Kenny just convinced me to buy the Tama Mirage (Luv the blk nickle hrdware too). Do I need 7 kits ? Nope. Am I a professional drummer ? Nope. Ooh I'm going to be in so much trouble 🤕 (Btw, if you call GC or MF, they'll cut you a deal on this kit...looking at you Sweetwater 😞) Thanks Kenny.
Well you could let Tama know that a 2K kit shouldn't come with an 8-lug bass drum with cheap spikes. It cheapens the whole kit, and the Starclassic brand.
@@jofujenkins Hi Jo, it's the same with any other material, they just went cheap and they should know about it. These levels of finishes are acceptable up to the Hyperdrive and similar drumkits. Not Starclassic, not even Performer. That's just cutting corners.
@@AP02112 Yup. They're less noticeable though (the kick drum is right in your face) but you're totally right. What they did was take the old Superstar Hyperdrive hardware (I should know, I own one). Bottom line is: this will stop people like me from buying a Starclassic, and even though I'm a Tama nut, I will consider other options on the market (and there are really nice ones with higher finish for way less money).

Sometimes with acrylic you have to avoid making too many holes or they become a risk for cracking under extreme conditions.
