I don't want to say that everyone who dislikes this art is close-minded just because they see art and don't prefer it. that would mean that to be open minded is to like everything, which just isn't true. however, I guess the main points that people argue when trying to degrade this man's work is that he isn't following the standard approach of art-and he isn't even showing that he has the "skills," meaning shade/dimensions/etc, to do so. for example, people like to see art that captures reality so well you question if it is a painting versus photograph. or, sometimes people champion artists who can take an alternative universe within their mind and bring it to life. basquiat doesn't necessarily bring his art into our reality but rather exposes his own unique universe. I believe that there are several of artists that can outsketch basquiat and even make more vivid, real, paintings than basquiat. however, basquiat was original and imo thats what art is. original expression. sure there are artists that can look at a room and capture that sight almost perfectly on a canvas. but I don't see that as original. and sure people can make unique combinations between different objects-like once I seen two bodies playing chess one body had a heart for a head the other a brain for a head. but, I gotta say, basquiat's imagery doesn't lean on these standard skills that we all assume is necessary to be considered a great artist, but rather freely drawn images. the colors are pretty the way he outlines certain parts of bodies/figures with different colors is also pretty. but thats all my opinion, im sure you see it and think its garbage lol.
What is an artist? In my mind it is someone who creates graphic art from his brain. He does not to fall into a particular style or genre. He chooses to "do his thing" and mostly does it for himself/herself. Art is a form of communication when there is no other way to communicate. Realism is for the camera and abstraction is true creation from the mind. As a viewer you are getting an opportunity to look into a little bit of an artist's brain.
The story of him and his girlfriend laughing that he didn't have any formal art training and he was trying to draw a hand that looked like a 4 year old drew it and his paintings were beginning to sell for 50k and more.Priceless.

Based on the collection of the drawings in this video I personally feel that Jean’s works were entirely conceptual and highly neurotic, constipated with thinking and so desperately needing a channel. Any surface would have done. He opened the curtain between his mind and the world. I’m more interested in what Jean’s expressions would have looked like if he had meditation and an environment that supports and nurtures such characters. Like a Shamanic setup. Nature, natural food, loving people, and psychedelic healing plant medicines. Interesting. Thanks for sharing ❤️

I guess it's also fear of change that makes people so ignorant. People who haven't realized that change is a necessary part of growth/evolution. Basqi's art was supposed to be the next level of art, evolution. Being his age over the years I've seen imitations that are just as good as his work unfortunately they're not unfortunately some artists out there just as good as him. Some of the fakes are fantastic. So purchase the work if you love it and get the paperwork behind it and the money will follow whether it's fake or not.

Try to think of it like music: everyone likes a great song, but every one has a different opinion of what makes up a great song. Lyrics? Melody? Beats? Everyone has different preferences. I understand why someone would have your opinion regarding the art, same as I feel certain styles of music are abrasive and unlistenable. There's no greatest, that's only opinion. These pictures evoke a special feeling in me, the same way certain lyrics and songs hit me. I can't explain it. I just embrace it. I'm sure you have pictures that do the same to you! =)
Paintings are only worth what someone is willing to pay for them. Paintings whether Picasso or Warhol, or Basquiat fetch hundreds of millions of dollars simply because Billionaires want them in their collections. When 2 or more Billionaires compete at auction to own a one of a kind original, the result is paintings selling for hundreds of millions of dollars. It's simply capitalism. Supply and demand. Basquiat isn't with us anymore. So there won't be anymore paintings from him coming to market. Therefore the few that remain will only increase in value. While the number of Billionaires in the world is always increasing. These guys want the painting more than they want or need the money. It's really that simple. Also, the more time you spend looking at art, the more your taste will evolve. You'll go from appreciating academic realism, to being drawn more toward impressionism, then abstraction etc. That's generally how it goes. Your tastes will expand and grow. You'll began to appreciate simplicity, scale, directness. Alla prima etc. You'll develop a more sophisticated and nuanced approach to art. The way to understand the why is to simply spend a lot of time looking at art. No different from choosing the clothes you wear. You know what you like because you've spent your entire life wearing clothes. No one has to convince you of what you like, what is good, or what is quality. You know immediately what resonates with you. For me, i love the way basquiat combines painting, with drawing, with text, with historical narratives with scale. Also if you ever get to see them in real life it'll change your opinion immediately. Not necessarily for the better either. It could go either way. In my case I liked his work more when I was standing in front of the original. You see sooo much going on. The layering, collage, the energy, the scale. It's really about providence in the art world .....you hang a Rothko at a garage sale your lucky to get 500 .....hang it at Sotheby's you get 100 million ..... A collector somewhere said it was worth something the artist now becomes famous and collectible and as a small group of collectors get interested the artist becomes more famous and his work becomes more collectible , add history and who owned his works and you have providence . Van Gogh only sold 1 painting when he was alive but later on those same paintings were part of a movement of Impressionism .....couldn't sell his paintings at 1 point but Impressionism took off and his work now is historical and goes for millions . The value of art is set by many factors , perception is reality . We can look at something and say a child could of done this and perhaps that's so and if the child becomes famous through collectors that art becomes valuable . I've look at modern art and shake my head when I see a cut out cardboard yellow banana taped to a wall go for 15,000 but it was done by a famous artist . Some art we are just not going to get but others see something we don't .
I mean unless you're an artist yourself Basquiat is VERY hard to get/connect to and even then it's difficult for some. To understand Basquiat you might have to start with something a little less advanced and trace back to his work. It's like experimental jazz very few people understand what they're listening to without having enjoyed "normal people jazz" first... but I'll highlight some key points. His color IQ is absolutely astounding like most of the greats he's right up there with Monet, and Francis in my opinion as far as color. His gesture is the BEST no one does gesture with such ease and mastery. He somehow makes every line look like he didn't think about it and it just flowed out kind of like a CHILD but there is a ton of perspective and depth in the pieces if you really look (of course again here's where familiarity with drawing and painting help if you were taught to see and draw 1, 2 and 3 point perspective and you've physically created pieces using these eye tricks then all of art opens up a bit more and becomes a treat especially Basquiat, de Kooning, Francis, etc...) the topics in his art are deep especially for the time (Imagine being so good at something that a whole world that's usually complete racist and closed off to your people now is forced to acknowledge you begrudgingly because the work is undeniable. Its probably one of the things I like most about basquiat rich white people hated that they loved him and knew he was the best and he knew it he'd come to the most expensive restaurants looking like a complete bum buy the most expensive shxt pay for rich people laugh and leave). He did not shy away from blackness or what that meant at the time and it's everywhere in his work. I could give you more but I'm ranting now lol. Enjoy

Picasso said he painted as a master his whole life in order to draw like a child. Children's drawings are pure. Basquiat is a master painter and draftsman. It may not be the greatest art in the world, by academic standards, but it certainly is some of the most original visual expressions in the world. Basquiat created a very unique visual language that can't be confused with any other artist. That's the greatest challenge all artists face. How to create an original visual vocabulary and language that separates you from other artists while at the same time being attractive to the art viewing audience. There are thousands of highly skilled artistic technicians in the world. But very few original artists. Even here on TH-cam there are hundreds of artists that can draw and paint according to academic standards better than Basquiat. But how many have developed there own visual language and vocabulary like Jean Michel? Not many.
You dont get it because you do not have a sense of visual language nor do you understand what art is about. All YOU see is colours and lines but the visual messages stump you because you are simple minded and uninformed.
The way to get it is to spend time looking at art. Visiting galleries and museums and standing in front of original works of art will over time educate you on why the art world holds different artists in high regard. You'll find that originality is key. Great artist develop there own visual language that can't be confused with other artists. That's why they stand out and are celebrated.

I've look at modern art and shake my head when I see a cut out cardboard yellow banana taped to a wall go for 15,000 but it was done by a famous artist . Some art we are just not going to get but others see something we don't .

I mean unless you're an artist yourself Basquiat is VERY hard to get/connect to and even then it's difficult for some. To understand Basquiat you might have to start with something a little less advanced and trace back to his work. It's like experimental jazz very few people understand what they're listening to without having enjoyed "normal people jazz" first... but I'll highlight some key points. His color IQ is absolutely astounding like most of the greats he's right up there with Monet, and Francis in my opinion as far as color. His gesture is the BEST no one does gesture with such ease and mastery. He somehow makes every line look like he didn't think about it and it just flowed out kind of like a CHILD but there is a ton of perspective and depth in the pieces if you really look (of course again here's where familiarity with drawing and painting help if you were taught to see and draw 1, 2 and 3 point perspective and you've physically created pieces using these eye tricks then all of art opens up a bit more and becomes a treat especially Basquiat, de Kooning, Francis, etc...) the topics in his art are deep especially for the time (Imagine being so good at something that a whole world that's usually complete racist and closed off to your people now is forced to acknowledge you begrudgingly because the work is undeniable. Its probably one of the things I like most about basquiat rich white people hated that they loved him and knew he was the best and he knew it he'd come to the most expensive restaurants looking like a complete bum buy the most expensive shxt pay for rich people laugh and leave). He did not shy away from blackness or what that meant at the time and it's everywhere in his work. I could give you more but I'm ranting now lol. Enjoy

Dope question actually never herd that one before and in a way rap/hip hop is very similar to the approach Basquiat took in his work as far as "sampling" from his influences... if I had to pick from modern-day rappers as crazy as it sounds I'd say Playboi Carti the baby voice that basically becomes one with the instrumental and places a heavy focus on vibe and melody vs understanding wtf he's actually saying lol has some obvious parallels to Basquiat work and illicit the same wtf response from detractors

That's the genius. When you look closer and read the words in his paintings to go along with the awesome visuals you'll find he's creating some provocative pieces. Picasso said he painted as a master his whole life in order to draw like a child. Children's drawings are pure. Basquiat is a master painter and draftsman. This artist is so misunderstood my the untrained and ignorant eye. I understand if someone doesn't like it but don't dismiss this art as doodles. You dont understand visual language you dont understand art...............at all.
This is why only rich people buy art. Poor people have other priorities.
It may not be the greatest art in the world, by academic standards, but it certainly is some of the most original visual expressions in the world. Basquiat created a very unique visual language that can't be confused with any other artist. That's the greatest challenge all artists face. How to create an original visual vocabulary and language that separates you from other artists while at the same time being attractive to the art viewing audience. There are thousands of highly skilled artistic technicians in the world. But very few original artists. Even here on TH-cam there are hundreds of artists that can draw and paint according to academic standards better than Basquiat. But how many have developed there own visual language and vocabulary like Jean Michel? Not many.

The way to get it is to spend time looking at art. Visiting galleries and museums and standing in front of original works of art will over time educate you on why the art world holds different artists in high regard. You'll find that originality is key. Great artist develop there own visual language that can't be confused with other artists. That's why they stand out and are celebrated.

Style shouldn't matter, what matters is the way it connects with people and the meaning, style can add like a cherry on top but it's not the whole cake. I personally love his works, some more than others, even then his work shows a very raw thinking and expression of the self- bit like therapy I guess?
