They didnt close the airport because the pilots were to scared, although safety was becoming a concern they closed the airport mainly because there wasnt enough room to expand and have a second runway.
Yep, it was suppose to be a little pre-WW2 airport. Also some residents in Kowloon city initially said they miss the plane noise and they can't sleep for a while.🤭
The 747 in all versions (the SP being particularly superb) was a constant and always spectacular visitor to unique Kai Tak. Concorde was equally spectacular, but only arrived infrequently on special occasions. It was a brand new China Airlines B744 that overran Runway 13 and ended up in the water, needing its vertical stab to be detonated in order for unobstructed operation to resume. The Checkerboard approach was hazardous due to surrounding high terrain and buildings which contributed to adverse winds, a frequent feature especially in typhoon season. As I remember only Captains after special training were permitted to execute the Checkboard approach and landing. I came here to watch as I have two Kai Tak addons for MS2020 by Redwing and Model Instruments--was hoping to hear more about what you thought of this Redwing implementation. Kai Tak was such a cool arrival... I'm happy you were likely too blown away by that to comment on the scenery and its glitches (eg: civilian motor cars regularly crossing the runway or taxiways).
I remember flying into Kai Tak in an MD-80 from Beijing and the turn actually is nearly scary as you are so close to the ground and you fell like you are crashing. Wow the memories . Could you share the link to the add-on that would be great!
Also the reason why they shut down Kai Tak is becuz before building are short but when the time passed the buildings grew taller and also in Tsim Sha Tsui literally near the airport has the tallest building in HK (ICC)
"Why don't planes just land on the other side of the runway where it has, you know, clear.... ocean." - Swiss, 2021. (What was the point in this? Very good question.)
Thankfully nobody crashed into the city however that was a very real worry as specially in the winter months when the approach was reversed. Although one did end up in the bay back in 1993 and people where injured although thankfully none seriously as per my knowledge. I loved kai tak airport as I lived in Hong Kong from 1990-1999. And yes I like the newer airport that replaced Kai tak as in Chep Lap Kok.
Just saying, this shouldn’t be the approach path. If you are flying vfr it should (listed in the old charts) hug closer to the mountain. IGS13 has a glideslope and you should’ve followed that.
