Butterhouse Tunnel

A short explore of a disused railway tunnel in Diggle, Tameside. Opened in 1885 as part of the Micklehurst Loop, an 8 mile duplication of lines between Diggle and Stalybridge.
The 329 yard tunnel was closed along with the line in 1966. The southern approach cutting in Uppermill has been filled in, but the tunnel itself is intact.

Have you got the coordinates or a nearby road name? I live in Stalybridge and would like to nip over for a look but I cannot for the life of me figure out where it is.

If you were to walk up Ward Lane, cross the canal and follow track to the right alongside the current line, you reach the tunnel.
