  • What's inside these garnets from Idaho's Emerald Creek Star Garnet area? Hopefully lots of rutile needles (aka silk) that will give us night bright stars! But if you go and collect or buy star garnets from Idaho, how many will actually star? What do you need to do to see the stars? Let's cut a bunch of garnets and find out.

Another great garnet video Patrick! Very interesting that the stars didn’t show up until a finer grit stage. Liz at Irv’s rock shop in Spokane told me she can get a star out of most Emerald Creek garnets, so you might be on to something! I have so many now but haven’t tried cutting them yet. I’d hate to cut into a nice crystal only to have no star! 😬 Thanks for sharing your knowledge!

Very cool video! I always learn something new from your videos. I love the one with the flash that moves with the angle of light @6:30, beautiful. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and this video Patrick!✌️🤠

I need to go back and dig in the clay/mud pits (ha-ha) at Emerald Creek again soon. The slogging is worth it when you screen out those lovely purple-red garnets! I still have bags of them from over 20 years ago, and a few honkers in the general mix. I should grind the ones with the most potential and check for ANY sort of starring. Who knows... maybe some day I'll find the ultra-rare 6-ray garet. ;) :D

Stones are fun to play with. I actually found one that turned out to be a 6 ray star very hard to find. The hunt is the fun part

The silk causing rutile needles present within garnets is generally seen to align parallel to face edges within the crystals, subsequently, garnets of the rhombic dodecahedral habit are seen to have up to 12 4-rayed stars visible perpendicular to the dodecahedra and appear as rhombohedral face centred stars with intersecting angle of 70⁰ & 110⁰.
With garnets forming in a cubic-octahedral habit, the needles are aligned parallel to the edges of the octahedron, a mixture of both 6 and 4 rayed stars may be apparent in such stones, with up to eight 6-rayed stars octahedral face centred with 60⁰ intersections and up to six 4-rayed stars cubic face centred appearing with intersections at 90⁰.
It's quite rare for such stones in the cuboctahedral habit to have silk uniformly dispersed throughout and thus many stones will contain fewer than the maximum amount of possible stars with some stones only having sufficient inclusions to generate defined stars in only a portion of the crystal.
As the crystal growth occurs in progressive layers over time, some crystals may only have rutile present in distinct layers of growth due to the presence of the necessary elemental constituents during the growth phases, thus some garnets may be seen to be more silky centred or conversely only containing silk in the outermost layers.
Even in stones from the same locality there can sometimes be great variance between one stone and the next, although, there may also be many similarities seen from a particular location also.
For these reasons, cutting star stones is often best achieved by smoothing the surface prior to cutting deeper into the material so as one can determine the characteristics of each stone individually.

You go to great lengths to show a stones potential and i like that. Whether one or all of your garnets star, they are some really beautiful, big garnets and if anyone can find the star in them, its you! As you said, keep reaching for the stars!

Sometimes I think I could start a second channel where all I do is test things that the so-called experts in comment section suggest.

The rutile is concentrated towards the middle of the stone so that is where the star - if there is one - is going to be most visible. You can generally use one of the facets as the base of your cab to center the star.
