Havent seen this lady in years but boy,did she make me laugh this morning. She has a wonderful talent for putting pictures in your mind.
She tells tales ,a bit like Billy Conolly without the added language.Marvelous.👏👏👏👏👏👏💐💐

I love this woman. How refreshing to hear someone going a 'stand-up' routine without profanity every second word! Her poems are equally good and very funny. Most other comedians' routine would be half as long if they omitted the vulgarity. Well done Mrs. Ayres! Please keep your stories coming.

I agree, don’t get me wrong I like comedy with swearing with exception to that frankie Boyle and jimmy Carr but this is so clever she’s a brilliant story teller

What I love us that without stating the obvious about her dad’s swimming costume or using any direct words, she manages to paint the picture very clearly and leaves things up to the imagination of the audience. Now THAT is true comedy!

Sounds like quite a few families were the butt of The Women's Weekly's sense of humour. I saw her perform in Hobart, Tasmania when she toured there. I was amazed at her ability to remember her stories as well as poems for over an hour. I hadn't realised she was such a gifted raconteur. This was maybe about 2009. I never heard about this swim suit though.

Brighton beach was bad enough with trying to walk on those pebbles and then to suffer the indignity and pain in the feet of having to stagger back up with me crutch round me knees and the extra weight of half the English Channel hanging off me skinny little shoulders. Sadly (if somewhat inevitably) Woman's Weakly has seemingly distanced itself from its seminal knitting ethos and gone after the smart set. Madonna's belated foray into the now arcane
world of wool and needles came to nothing and now seems a distant, unheeded flash in the bedpan of history.

It was a holdover from the era before synthetics, combined with post war thrift and economy. Wool had been largely the chief material used for bathing wear. It's durable, reasonably elastic, and dries fairly quickly. Unfortunately, as Pam referenced, it also absorbs a tremendous volume of water! I remember wearing machine knitted woollen swimming trunks in the 1960's. An old pair that belonged to my Dad. Deep teal blue with a white belt. They soaked up plenty of water, but thankfully didn't bag out and sag horribly.
Nylon and lycra have made all of that a distant memory now.
